What is Wahoo’s new Summit Freeride?

Wahoo, the US-based fitness technology company, has unveiled a new climbing feature called “Summit Freeride” for its Elemnt GPS bike computers. Described as a “major enhancement” to the existing Summit features, Summit Freeride automatically provides essential climb data on every ride, even without following a planned route. The feature will be available on the latest versions of the Elemnt Roam and Elemnt Bolt computers starting from May 2nd.

Wahoo’s Summit Segments feature already provides climb data from pre-loaded routes, but Summit Freeride goes a step further by automatically detecting climbs during rides. It displays information on the computer screen for in-progress climbs, upcoming climbs, and completed climbs. Riders can filter upcoming climbs based on difficulty level, allowing them to conserve energy for more challenging ascents.

So how does Summit Freeride work?

Wahoo utilizes pre-installed maps and elevation data to detect and calculate climbs along the route. Once a climb is detected, the rider is alerted and shown an upcoming climb list on the screen. If the rider decides to leave a climb or join another, the feature adjusts on-the-fly to provide recalculated data.

Summit Freeride is expected to appeal to cyclists who enjoy exploring without following a pre-planned route and prefer to have advance warning of upcoming climbs. It also puts Wahoo in line with its competitors, as Garmin and Hammerhead have also recently introduced similar features in their bike computers.

Mike Saturnia, CEO of Wahoo, commented, “Summit Freeride is a fantastic new feature for cyclists who like to ride without using a pre-planned route. Getting out and exploring is at the heart of what cycling is all about, so we are extremely excited to have this update go live this Spring, as part of our continued commitment to add regular updates to our suite of Elemnt Bike Computers.”

Wahoo developed Summit Freeride in conjunction with the recently released Elemnt Roam bike computer, which is designed with a navigation-first approach and boasts a claimed 17-hour battery life. The Elemnt Bolt, Wahoo’s previous model, has also received positive reviews for its performance capabilities.

Kyle is a digital writer for MuckersWorldwide.com I've been out riding all over Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire for the last 12 years. It is mainly to keep fit as I love food and would be 16st if I didn't ride my bike at least 3 times a week. This leads me to Muckers Worldwide, as when the weather is un-rideable (fair weather cyclist) I move indoors to cycle on Rouvy. We have a large group of races that we race throughout winter in the UK. Hope you come and join us on a Tuesday & Thursday title of the races are "Muckers". Thanks, Kyle
