MUCKERS DOWN UNDER RACE 4 OF 8. 15/08/23

Rouvy Route Used : Arthur’s Pass National Park | New Zealand | 13.11miles | 1315ft. climbing.

Route 5 from the Down Under | MEDIUM Challenge.

66 REGISTERED | 42 FINISHERS | 4 DNF | 19 DNS | 1 DSQ

And we are back! 7pm Tuesday is now Down Under Championship Night!! Can’t believe the interest this has generated and we will be doing more over the winter so stay with us for your racing needs as you know we race hard and (hopefully) fair, and also get through these challenges as well!! 55 minutes I’ve given us to get to the next race ands its only 13.11 miles so I’ve got to have made a mistake somewhere??? Nope! 1315ft of climbing on this one makes it the steepest route out of the whole 8 races in the championship so I’ve been a little bit more cautious on time as I do want as many to get from this race to the next one.

So is this another top 20 mention or top 10? As always, it depends if we have over 50 riders on the start line or not, so lets see who performed the best and gets their names in the “bold” gold!

top 10 it is…. and 1 disqualification as I did reach out to Carlo about lack of data on his Rouvy but he hasn’t responded and I just feel his whole set us is producing incorrect figures so he’s been disqualified from the Muckers Down Under Championship.

So well done to “Tuden” with a return to form, followed by “hinsbergen” in 2nd and “nelsonsnyder” in 3rd.

4th came the very strong “Stefan793” , followed by the flying French duo of “stephane-martin” in 5th and “pasjordi60” in 6th

7th came the superb Brit “robbiedoo” followed home by Top Muckers Worldwide Team Rider “Berty-Bassett6” in 8th! “adampel” came home in 9th with the final mention going to the strong Dane “transberg” with an effort that was only just over 39 minutes long!

So well done everybody, hope you enjoyed it and got some decent points for the championship. The championship standings will be published tomorrow after the 2LATE4ME races have all been run.

cheers everyone.

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

A few comments about tactics on the Muckers Chat before the race, I kept mine under my hat ready to be revealed as the race started … and my tactics played out perfectly. The 2 mile climb (5 mini climbs) at the end would not suit me so I decided I would fly with a fast group for as long as possible then get to the last climbs and simply pace myself to maintain position. I managed to get with Andy_UP, Yayarecki, Denny44, kylofski, flyger plus a couple of others and we were moving along nicely (some really strong pulls by Denny44). Every slight incline risked me getting dropped and eventually I ‘popped’. I can’t quite remember how I ended up with Loki1972, I think he came across with bazak.oztan who first pulled ahead and then dropped back which is unusual for this strong rider. I did the whole last section with Loki1972 and it worked well, bizarrely, until we passed ‘bazak’ Loki was invisible and I got no draft, after that point he (and the draft) reappeared. It seemed a shame to sprint at the end but I have championship points to think about, apologies Loki. Seem to be in a little ‘purple patch’ of form recently, recording some of my highest numbers this year, so very happy with that and loving the bigger race entries these races are attracting.

This route kicked my butt. I didn’t get a good look at the elevation until I entered the event and had the yellow and RED line across the bottom of the screen. At first I felt good, but then the race started. I know now that a jump is necessary to try and get into a decent group so there is a chance at a draft partner. So a 6w/kg start it was, but that wasn’t enough! There was a group of 8 or so just 100 feet ahead but I couldn’t make the jump so I settled in as lead of the next 20 group. I dropped a few places during the FLAT section but I felt I was pacing myself ok for what was to come. Today I had guests in the house watching and it was funny listening to their comments. “oh! red is uphill” “he’s only going 6 mph” “are those guys faster than you” “halfway! (at mile 6??)” then came the climbs and I was ready. I made a big jump on the first one and when I looked at the screen Mick michel was a few hundred feet in front of me. I think I was in 30th at the time but I kept thinking of trying to get Micks 31st position in the first race. The challenge was on. I kept getting closer on each climb. I was getting real close and then MKali went cruising past both of us. I finally got past Mick on the second to last climb but he quickly regained position on the descent. There was one uphill to go. We both pushed, he stayed 20 feet behind the entire way. I got to the top and shifted into high gear and when I looked up my screen had frozen. I screamed NOOOOOOO! The gods listened and away I was going. I think the fear of the screen locking gave me an extra boost and I powered to stay ahead of Mick by 1.3 seconds at the finish! Turned out to be an ok race. 8 minutes to rest before the Sprint!

Planning a double race is simple only on paper, in fact the thought of saving myself only lasted a few seconds from the start 😜.
First race, a good drive, I thought I could work more with Ryanio-Bianchi, but in the last two climbs I was unable to stick to his wheel, so I kept what turned into a 24th place… nice race to all the friends who left 🤙

Only one comment, mostly to myself.
See that you’re well rested before a race. I thought I was but not even close. 5 min into the race my HR spiked and I’s still in my zone 1/2 on the power :-p
I finished just to know I’d the second race in 5 min . Worse race day EVER. But nice to be part of this amazing team 🙂
Thumbs up for you’ll finishing in top 10

Race 4 had a 1-1 ratio. This aligns well with my preferences. The temperature in my garage is 25°C, and it’s sunny outside with minimal wind. Ordinarily, I would opt for an outdoor ride on a day like this. However, due to the Muckers Challenge Race, I had to participate. I began strongly and managed to catch up to Denny44, S. Ludford, and Andy_UP. I rode alongside these fellow Muckers until the final hill, where Andy_UP and Denny44 outpaced me. Following this race, I had to conclude my day because the heat was intense and I started to feel dizzy. Congratulations to all, and I look forward to our next meetup in a few weeks.

It’s so great to have teammates. Denny doesn’t go for the championship (he rather go on holiday) so he wanted to help me and bring me to the base of the hill. I stayed in his wheel, he pulled like a true champion, a little too fast but steady. Then the red bits started and I fired one rocket after another. Seeing guys I normally have to let go, even on the uphill, go into the behind list was very satisfying. Got on top first of the group I was in, with Yayarecki close behind, so one more acceleration to make sure he couldn’t close the gap. Secured a nice result and it felt like a little victory. It’s so great to have teammates!
