MUCKERS GROSSGLOCKNER PRIZE JERSEY HILL CLIMB. 26/11/23

ROUVY Route used: Grossglockner from Dollach | Austria | 30.7miles | 7995ft climbing

112 Registered | 78 Starters | 65 Finishers | 13 DNF | 34 DNS

78 Mad Riders on the start line for this one-off challenge route set by ROUVY. nearly 8000ft of climbing in just over 30 miles awaited us, but at least it was a flat start and there were 2 or 3 downhill sections to at least maybe recover or at best, rest!

Super strong Finish rider “Kaihu” got the win today with an amazing time of 2:05:46.9! Some of the riders at the rear of the field were going to take nearly 2 times as long to do this, which shows just how strong these top finish riders are on the Muckers Race! Silver goes to super fit French rider “Alan-H” who was only 2 minutes behind, then another 2 minutes later comes the one and only “Karel_sousek” in 3rd place.

unfortunately 4th is a NED today, so “Revolution” gets the bump up to 4th in the Muckers standings, with “CerveloKevin” getting his Wattbike to to 5th! Another NED which means “RuudBaars” gets the bump to 6th, then Another NED which means “m-forby” is awarded 7th!

Looks like “Mark_J” managed to keep cool with what looks like glitching issues and gets awarded 8th for his persistence, with “peters7” riding strong and being awarded 9th. 2 riders who I can’t check data on next which means “Ronald78” gets the last place in the top 10!

But we had over 50 on the start line so even though everyone deserves a special mention today, we will stick to the top 20 as per the Muckers Way…

11th gets awarded to “boogybill70” with fellow Great British riders “Rocket996” 2 minutes behind in 12th with “qiaozhi” just 4 minutes behind in 13th. 2 minutes later comes “Alex79WestFR” in 14th who just finishes 15 seconds in front of “pesaari” in 15th place.

So we now have 5 riders who will now get the bump into the top 20 Muckers Worldwide placings due to the 5 NEDs we’ve had so far!

“Stefan_Smit” gets 16th, we then have another NED, so “HalAir” gets a nice 17th place. Nice riding by “nvdb” gets him awarded 18th place, with the last 2 top 20 places being filled by the top 2 Muckers Worldwide Team Riders on todays race with “denny44” getting 19th and “Chorus” getting that last mention in 20th place!!

if you’ve been a NED (not enough data) today, fear not, you are still classified on the ROUVY race results, we just have the extra rules of friendship and Heart Rate data so we can allow all trainer types to compete on the Muckers races.

65 riders finished this amazingly hard route today and if I could mention you all I would, but I can’t be here all day today, got cleaning to do!! 🙄😉

Well done everyone and if you’d be so kind as to leave a comment then that would be great.

Next race is on Tuesday where we are getting back to a race within a race, but its a “No Heart rate zone 7” race where you can either just go for the outright win, or you can try to pace yourself and go for the race within a race erm… race! its up to you! Link below:

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

hi Neil, thanks for this event. unfortunately I left my hearth belt in office last Friday after the commute section so I had two options: skip the race or take a ned ranking. very hard race despite I attempted to keep as regular ad possible. congratulations to all the finishers.

    • Neil Rushby says:

hi Alberto, well done and thanks for commenting. Like i say in the report, you are still classified on ROUVY, its just a NED ranking with us today but not to take anything away from the achievement, just rules are rules and if we bend them for 1, its just a slippery slope we don’t want to end up on. thank you.

I was thinking about cross-country skiing today, but it was cold, freezing -21 celsius 🥶, so ride was a better option. Today was a good day and I felt good from the start line, so I set off with full power. I drove some distance with Karel and then I don’t know what happened, I noticed that I was alone and I thought that now I have to go hard. But those last kilometers were difficult and Alan caught me, the one kilometer lead narrowed to about 630 meters. I was really in trouble but I fought against the fatigue, I cursed that I have to make it to the finish line. There were dark moments in my eyes💀, but I overcame the problems, this was one of the hardest cycling, for this I needed that Finnish “Sisu” 🇫🇮 if you have heard of this.

Thanks Neil for the arrangements 👍 and thanks to all the participants. I am now reducing indoor cycling and starting cross-country skiing.

    • Neil Rushby says:

well done on the win, enjoy the cross country skiing!

    • Nagy Róbert says:

My absolute favorite sport is cycling. Eeer… okay there is one sport that is over cycling for me is x-country skiing. That is the best stuff to raise your VO2Max (also needed for cycling), and to suffer the most intensively 🙂 Shame on the weather here in CE that allows only a few hours/year to do this beautiful sport.
      Much better in Finnland :).

OK, let’s get this one done, a few pacing strategies discussed before the race, my priority was to be off the bike by 12:00 (UK time) so Andy_UP’s 2.5w/kg seemed a good plan. At the start it took a lot of discipline to avoid chasing riders only going 5% faster pace but we let them go and settled into a groove, we were not doing “Through and Off”, just keeping within range occasionally swapping places, I find it easier to pace from an Avatar than watch the top left corner. We joined Dolphwader and continued the 1st/2nd climb together. I drifted ahead slightly at the halfway point (15 miles) but planned to get off the bike while it careered out of control down the long descent while I miraculously changed kit in the team car before hopping back on before the 3rd climb at 22 mile point. Dolphwader had by now stepped off unwell and Andy wasn’t quite in view, I accidentally upped the pace to 2.9w/kg and everything suddenly felt ‘just right’, 90rpm became 100rpm and my body felt nicely fuelled so I just let rip picking up positions all the way up. Each name on the list became my next target and I ended up very pleased with 3hr21min and 52nd … 52nd on a 8000ft climb, amazing, thank you everyone for joining the race, you make it what it is.

Hello everyone and at the very beginning respect for today’s warriors on such a hard and surprising route, by no means me he he .I didn’t expect the route to be so demanding. At the beginning it was going well, unfortunately after the second hour someone disconnected the electricity and we had to fight to reach the finish line. Fortunately, we managed to overtake a few more people. I was also unlucky today because my chain fell off twice and unfortunately I lost a lot of positions that I couldn’t make up. I consider the whole race as a good school and a lesson in humility. Well, until next time..:)

  6. Neil Rushby says:

nearly 4 hours on the bike and nearly 2 hours behind the winner! And i am still happy as that was another tough mental challenge for me to keep going but i completed it. I had a glitch at the start, my fault, as i didn’t want to warm up before as i knew i was in for a long session, so i jumped on the bike with 30 seconds to go and no data apart from HR??? a quick think, and i realized hadn’t turned the bike on!🙄. flicked it on, and I was away, but I’d missed the chance to draft the 2.5 crew!! Settled into 2.2s and was very comfortable, so comfortable in fact, i deviated from plan and decided i could ride up the 2nd part of the first big climb at 2.5/2.6! that lasted half way up and then i was heart rate zone 6 and starting to struggle! what a Muppet!! got over the crest and came down the hill, quick change of top, then it was back to the climbing but i was now struggling to even hit 1.9s. totally bonked and cursing myself, i just focused on the Silvester Stallone documentary I was watching and somehow i got up that last big climb. another downhill rest, then 2 short climbs to the end. Weirdly, I can now ride at 2.5s up these 2 climbs and i cross the line feeling like i could carry on even more??? how weird. a totally opposite feeling to about 2 hours earlier. So lesson learned, stay to the plan, but at least I know although i will be very slow on the new years eve eve race, if i stick to the plan, i should complete it! 🤞🤞🤞🤞

  7. luca_ma says:

I was about to go out, but last minute I got on to make it a day hard. I did not want to go over my limit, so I was dropped in the first part of the climb, because 5 w/kg is a bit over the limit for me now. However I felt quite good, eating and drinking well and got back to the group fighting for the 2nd place. There was Alan, Revolution and Karel – although he was not visible on the screen all the race, just in the left riders box.
It was just by the gletscher viewpoint, I wanted to eat something and take a picture maybe, but guys attacked immediately, so I had to wait with the eating a bit. Then in the next long climb, Karel the ghost got dropped, then it was me as the pace went up a bit again.
In the last climb, I was able to get to the 3rd place and easily hold it. So I went not full gas to the final meters, but on the finish line I found out I was overtaken by ghost Karel… I need to watch the left riders list next time I guess :-)))) But no one cares, as I forgot to take the HR strap in the morning rush. Sorry for that and thanks for a great race.

    • Karel Soušek says:

Hi Luca, thanks for report and sorry for being ghost, sometimes i have it same with you on other races. Hopefully Rouvy fixes these bugs soon! Great effort.

      • luca_ma says:

Thanks Karel, no problem it was just a funny moment. And nice recovery and re-motivation from your side! Congrats!

  8. HalAir says:

Was keen on a real challenge and had anticipating this race for a couple of weeks…
I “enjoy” a good climb, despite being close to 90kg – so I´m no goat! On Friday I had a heavy leg day in the gym, and I could reeeally feel that effort Sunday morning, so rather anxious how this estimated 3hr affair would go down ;). Saturday I prepped rice cakes and pre-mixed drink for the ride, I was not going to be undefuelled for this one! Due to the length of this ride I did not warm-up pre-race start, other than gently spinning the legs the last minute. On a good day I can do 3,6w/kg for an hr so I knew I should stay below that in order to survive the ascents, so found a good pace at around 3,2w/kg and started chugging while being around 45th place on the flats. I knew pacing would be important so focused not to go too deep too soon, plenty of time to blow up if I wasnt careful… Spent a fair bit of time along with SwissChris69, we were equally paced overall, me carrying the edge going up, while he was super strong on the decents – so a little cat & mouse action was on 😉

Finished with a consistent pace in 23rd position, not anticipating a Top20 mention so that was a welcome treat – I felt the Top20 riders were super fast, and the best times absolutely mind boggling – I am super impressed! Having said that, staying in the seat for 3…4hrs to complete this effort is a _proper_ effort, kudos to you all!

I also invited a friend of mine to join with his new turbo trainer setup, Bjorkemannen – I think he also “enjoyed” the ride!

Tomorrow will be a well-deserved rest day, looking forward to it 😀

  9. qiaozhi says:

Great & tough race, the last ascent in the cobbled section was almost too much at the end. I paced myself better than in the last race were I did not finish.

  10. Karel Soušek says:

Race of the week with famous Grossglockner climb. Could not decide what frame to choose, but i sticked with Giant Propel. Thus after watt intro by Matthias i decided to keep higher pace in flat section as most of my opponents had Festka, which is better in climb. We made short breakaway with Kaihu before first climb. Then to my surprise Kaihu continued with incredible pace and i got stucked in between. Not for long, Alan, Luca and Revolution caught me soon and i had problem to stay with them.

Also hr meter stopped working, i tried reconnect few times, but then i could see only black screen, so i stopped and focused on racing again.
Kaihu was increasing his advantage despite our group was doing good effort all the time. We distanced Luka but he was able to get back. I took one energy gel and bar in long descent, but despite that it was me who started to loose. I was ready to end up fifth as the gap was 150m to Luca, but hold on, we are not over yet.

One more descent and final climb. Got nice rhythm as i could feel finish is nearby. Managed gap first to Revolution, who was seemingly done and managed gap also to Luca, just taking bronze medal. Hardly could do more, im very happy with such effort. Superb race, thank you all who joined!

  11. Revolution says:

Hi, We’ll that was brutal. Tried keeping up with Alan-H on the 2nd to last hill. 5w/kg is tough after 1.5 hours. Three quarters up and my legs were not wanting to move. Managed to go over top in 3rd but that last final climb I was done and couldn’t hold on. Excellent ride. Thanks for organising.

  12. Alex79FR says:

    Was Epic !
I arrive on the line only 2 minutes before the start, so no warm-up, and as the first 4 kilometers are flat I suffer behind the powerful profiles : I fall from 10th to 26th place! The cardio takes off and I suffer for the first hour. Then we arrive at the big percentages (13%!), and there I manage to stabilize my position, then I begin my work of undermining and like a vulture I nibble away places on all those who show signs of weakness, I take 19th place in the last 500 meters, probably because my competitor had a little cramp on the last ramp, or a technical problem !
Make 2h45, so far behind the top 5, but proud of not having slackened my effort.

A bit of a mixed result, because I didn’t have the same legs as in the Col de la Loze last week, I think I can do 5 to 10 minutes less…

Congrats to all the finishers, this one is so hard ! Alex.

  13. Andy_UP says:

These really long rides are not my cup off tea. I suffer from start to finish because, for some reason, I can’t do “same slow pace” without pain. So a mental struggle from start to finish. Wanted to do 2.5w/kg for the ride, but after 2h, even that started to be too high. But I did it, and I know this makes me better in the championship races.

  14. sunniva says:

Hi, thank you for a good race. I’m glad I could be part of it. I was very afraid of this route and whether I would be able to complete it. I’m happy I managed to do it. I rode slowly, at my own pace, but on the last climb I felt pain in my legs.
Thank you for the Mucker’s jersey, I will wear it for the race next Sunday 🙂 Maybe it will give me some power 🙂 I am afraid of the Col de la Loze because of the maximum slope of 25% but with you I will try to do my best to finish this route.
