MAIN RACE REPORT:

First race of the championship and there was some frantic chat over the last few days from the big hitters on how to stay below the 5.0w/kg max average rule that’s come in this year! They basically had a choice: 1, actually ride a bit slower on this race, or 2, increase there weight on ROUVY. To us it was a challenge to those guys who basically race against maybe 7 or 8 other big hitters, to just have something else to think about rather than flat out for the win. So could they do it?? erm…. some yes, some no. The top 6 riders in the Main race all went 5.0w/kg or over, so unfortunately they will be disqualified from this Muckers race but then those listed above, played the game perfectly and stayed under that magic 5.0 figure. Also while we on this, we will be using the data that NITEOR gets from ROUVY so if you are walking that 4.9w/kg tightrope and ROUVY show you as 4.9, but then NITEOR shows it as 5.0, its the NITEOR one we use as that’s where we get the results compiled. It will more than likely work the other way as today “Adam96” has a w/kg rounded up to 5.0w/kg (Thanks ROUVY lol) but the real data on NITEOR shows his figure to be 4.97w/kg. ROUVY like to round up and down for some reason, but NITEOR uses the exact figure from ROUVY.

So, 204 riders registered for this main race with 124 finishers! we only had 4 DNF’s as well so all in all some great numbers. Once all the results are in and ROUVY mark the race as completed, our first job is to set everyone’s categories for this months championship and we can then mention the top 3 from each category below.

Before we get into the disqualifications, we had 161 riders finish this first round, but lets see how many are left after we remove the 5.0, 60kg and no heart rate data riders. everyone’s definitely moving up 6 places just from the initial look into this main race.

125 riders after implementing the Muckers rules. thank you to those 125 riders!

TO FINISH OFF.

So that’s this years first race all sorted. If you are missing from the standings its either because you didn’t supply hr data (this was the majority), males weight was below 60kgs and/or you averaged 5.0w/kg or more today.

Again, these are just rules to try and keep everyone “singing from the same hymn sheet” and to add some basic control and to keep you all on your toes. Please try and enjoy the challenge.

We are quite please with how the categories have come in as well, but we are still learning about these and no points are being allocated or deducted because of it, we just want everyone whos racing with us, to have the chance to see they were actually one of the best in there category today and that’s something to be proud of and hopefully spur you on to keep in that top 3, or even better, get moved up a category next month!

Please pop a comment in the comments on how the race went from your point of view, as we love to read about your battles on the route. We are hopefully going to use them in the upcoming podcast for this race as well so please keep the comments fair and respectful.

thank you

Mucker1974.

Since the OMG series, I’ve developed a new starting style where i try and go for a decent 1 min power and see where i end up. It went ok, but as soon as i settled back into what i thought was a decent power of 3.1(ish) everyone just starts streaming past me! And so it went all the way, i tried my best to stay above or around 3.0 and i eventually managed a nice sprint finish beating Belgium rider Vigil over the line to claim 83rd place. blows my mind that one of my best efforts in a race of 3.1w/kg average, is only good enough for 83rd place but i guess that’s the caliber of riders we are racing against this year!! So glad the points after 51st place are in 0.25 points drops per place to keep things nice and close to those of us just fighting to try and get into that elusive top 50! This is going to be interesting……

Wasn’t feeling it today, and with the climb starting right from the line I wasn’t inclined to hammer out a rocket start. Unlike Neil! So I didn’t pass him until we were, what, a km in? Something like that. But I was settling into high 3s, actually feeling pretty reasonable, when I suddenly realized I’d forgotten to change my wheelset! I was still on the 4-spoke! Ack! Well, couldn’t be helped, Rode most of the way working with RaTim and BigJohRides, and we reeled in a few to work our way up into the mid-40s. Those two averaged 3.8 W/kg while I did 3.9; and I’m saying it was because it was more work to get the heavy 4-spokes up the hill–that’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.

Thanks for the comment Mike. Solid start to this years championship!

    • Tomáš Hloušek says:

I felt good. I found my pace from the start and in the end I was only 1W below FTP. I was surprised that Mike was behind me, but looking at his wheels explained everything. I am happy with my performance. However, it was only in the ride summary that I realized that I had my HR meter on but it had not connected to Rouvy. So no points, but I am not upset either.
      Great race.

Well, the first race of the Muckers World Championship kicked off with a hill climb. It was only 6 miles long, but with a brutal 1,500ft of climbing, I estimated it would take me around 40 minutes to finish. That would give me just 5 minutes to warm up for the next race.

I had no idea how to approach this one—should I go as hard as possible for as long as I could since it was only 40 minutes? I wasn’t sure. With 120 riders on the start line, my aim was simply to break into the top 100. As with all Muckers races now, the field was packed with strong riders.

Off we went. I had no group at first, so I worked my way steadily through the field. I caught up to Mucker1974, who has become a seriously strong rider in my eyes. I passed him (yes, pushing the air in celebration!), knowing that if I could get past, I’d be able to keep him behind me.

Next, I caught up to another strong Mucker, S. Ludford, and we stuck together for the rest of the race. A few familiar faces rode with us, including Regina.L and Rouvy1Byron, but it was Ste who really kept me motivated. I pushed hard on the steeper sections, while he put the power down on the less steep parts.

At one point, a rider caught us up, and it looked like Manhon from GCN (rider T14S4) but it wasn’t, shame. Id hoped she’s was covering this Muckers races for GCN!

Coming into the final sprint, I managed to find a bit of extra effort and edged past Ste at the line. Overall, not a bad race—hit some peak power numbers for the year so far and finished 77th with a time of 33 minutes and 7 seconds.

See you all next week for the next race!

    • Neil Rushby says:

I’m quite happy with my new start strategy that i get to see about 40 riders pass me when i finally settle down 😂. Its a nice way to see who’s here and get the old kudos button active! But when you can past and you were pulling 3.2/3.3 i wasn’t gonna even attempt to jump on that train. That was a solid climb Mucker, well done!

  4. Manuel Lamber SHARK says:

I came from a great Stelvio effort, at the start I had a thousand worries about another uphill route but 🤞 on the short distance. In the last month with several tough races done even alone I said to myself but it can only get better right?? in the end I am satisfied I came first in my category. and in front of my partner OMG who always beat me on the climbs 😅🤣 @michael. Welcome back to all of you my friends, happy Muckers Championship 💪

    • Neil Rushby says:

Thanks for the comment Squalo! it was a great team effort on the OMG event and i was really proud of our team “something funny” being the only team to get all 5 riders over the GC finish line!

I really hope the categories work and we are really going to try and master these and when to reset them etc etc, as it will really give everyone throughout the field that extra bit of motivation to push and also know who there main rivals are while in the race.

  5. przemokrk says:

The race was super short and intense, and after 14 months of training on Rouvy, I broke the 5w/kg barrier. With a weight of 67kg, my new 20-minute ftp is 323w and, for example, 343w. The rules are simple and disqualification is granted. I’m interested in having fun, improving my performance and racing with the best. I’m not interested in the general classification. I definitely won’t take part in all the races because in the summer I will ride more outdoors than on Rouvy.

    • Neil Rushby says:

Thank you so much for the comment and its positive outlook on what we are trying to do. This 5.0w/kg rule won’t really be a factor in the majority of races over the year when we start to do the more longer races, this was just a tricky one to start with. But if we are getting 5.0 after 80 mins of racing, something is clearly not right and at least we have the rule in place now.

Love having you join us and please use them as you like, especially if the world championship isn’t really something you are taking on. We all have different reasons and motivations for being here, we are just really happy you are here! thanks again

Good to be back at Muckers C/S races. The one and only. Thought, I did a good job. But a good job with – for me fantastic – 3.2 W/kg and 297 W average means 70th place in the standings. Uff, that’s crazy. But the battle for the Cat A6 crown is on… Manu the Shark Lamber, I’m ready to beat you next time 😉

    • Neil Rushby says:

so glad you are getting into the extra battle for the category win! this is exactly why we wanted to get these added (and hopefully over time perfected) this season. Be great to add some bonus points to it next year.

This and Manuels comment has kinda helped us with when to do the re-calculations on the categories and we now feel at the start of every month as if we did it every race, you and Manuel might end up in a different category next race. But at least you know for this month, its on!!

  7. lrollin says:

I had said back in December: no more Muckers championship, too much pressure. And grrr… first race, and I’m back again. I really don’t like races with a single climb, so I wasn’t very motivated for this stage.

I wanted to start at a moderate pace, but right from the first meters, I had freezes throughout the first kilometer. I quickly abandoned the moderate pace and went into the red zone to catch up with the front group. But once again, too much power up front—I let the top 10 go and finished in the hard zone but not at my max.

I already struggled to hold onto the top 20, even though at the start of the race, I had told myself that a top 20 would be enough and probably less demanding in terms of intensity than aiming for the top 10.

Anyway, I feel like every Thursday, you’re all pushing harder and harder. Seven guys over 5w/kg in the main race—something rarely seen in Muckers races.

To finish, I think having a top 3 or top 5 per category is a great way to keep as many people motivated as possible. We’re not all equal in terms of power, and everyone should be able to stay motivated based on their own abilities.

    • Neil Rushby says:

Thank you for the comments. remember this was just the first battle in a very long war! Sorry about the glitches, that will push anyone to abandon a moderate pace and go red!

like i said in another comment above, a 20 min race will get us more 5.0w/kg averages so this was more just to see if those top guys who are interested in the championship could ride a little slower which some did.

we are torn between a top 3 and a top 5 to be honest. the elite, a1 and a2 cats don’t always have 5, but after that, those categories’ do have a lot of riders so maybe top 5 from cat A3 onwards? let me know what you think

  8. lrollin says:

Oh yes, I almost forgot—it’s already been mentioned, but there’s clearly a need for a separate women’s category with a top 5 ranking apart from the men’s classification.

  9. karel sousek says:

Muckers yearly championship just started with this short climbing kicker. New year, new rules. You can go high, but not over 5wkg avg, then you are too good and should ask for Pro contract according rules. I knew i could be in danger so i increased my weight by 1kg before race. Great workout warm up and we get started. With really great legs i could stay within top10 group despite frenetic pace.

I knew we are just close to that 5wkg threshold, so once we reached plateau on top of the climb, i clicked statistics in menu and when i saw i have also 5wkg, simply let rest of our group go, until power went down to 4,93wkg. Mixed feelings a bit, i could compete for a win, but did not want to be dsq for GC. Simple decision, awesome racing, thank you all who joined us!

    • Neil Rushby says:

Karel! thank you !!! hitting the stats screen was what i was hoping people would do as come one, did adding just 1 kg really slow you down that much? if it did you are one fine tuned athlete my friend!

But i did feel the chat in the weeks before this race was all about adding weight rather than controlling the power so this comment has restored my faith… so to speak.

      cheers again

Fun times, in glad I figured out this muckers race thing, I’ve seen them on rouvy, but didn’t know what it was about.
In the race I was in, there were only three of us and they kept me going around or above 3 watts per kilogram until about the last kilometer in which moment I completely bonked out. The unfortunate thing is the only time that really works for me is 2earlyforme ride which is actually kind of too late for me in central standard time but it works. I’ll see how long I can keep this up!

    • Neil Rushby says:

Thank you so much for the comment. please add your ROUVY name next time please so i know who you are on the standings? i’ve been asked to add a 6:30am (UK) by a few riders now so would that help at all? going to start adding it for next weeks race.

      cheers again for commenting,

  11. Hans HM says:

Perhaps appropriate to say thanx for the work you did with the great OMG World Tour the last couple of weeks – it was really great fun racing GC on time over 12 stages 👍🏻
The new categories in the championship seem fair so that everyone now has a chance of getting one if your famous mentions, Neil 😉 – it was a bit too easy with the old system if you mainly rode the earlier races – and a win in a small field was never really the main focus when you basically had to ride the race as an ITT in order not too loose too much time compared with the draft in the big evening races. Impossible task but actually very motivating.
No comments to the 5 w/kg and minimum kg rules if the people who are in trouble of reaching the limits are ok with them – just a shame that it seems to eliminate some decent non-cheating climbers from racing/riding on sundays. Kudus for that sunday climbing series as well – enjoy it 😉

    • Neil Rushby says:

hey Hans, thank you so much for the comments. I have to be honest, we didn’t really do too much on the OMG event. When they approached us to see if we wanted to be involved, we just said because we were having a break from our championship in January, that we would actually like to take part in something we weren’t in charge of for a change 😁😁. All we asked was if they were going to do it on Tuesday and Thursday, would they just delay picking the routes until some new (Oman) challenge routes came out and use the ones we suggested on those days, which they agreed to so all was fine That’s it. We had 2 teams from the Muckers stable take part, and i was in the only team of 5 that had all team members finish all 12 races, so that was our little victory, but we all really enjoyed it.

We’d love the other time slots to get more riders so you can all enjoy the draft and who knows, maybe another year might help riders know that those races will be there every week again. There’s not a lot else we can do.

I do just want to clarify something about the 5.0kg rule though as it has nothing to do with the Sunday event which from reading your comment, it looks like you think it does? Sundays are for everyone and the NITEOR event is for everyone on smart trainers. really simple and just about the elevation. All we said about Sundays is if we see someone who’s blatantly cheating there way up a climb then they will be removed but i won’t even look into anything like that until after the summer as this event is not about getting points for being the fastest up the climb. So if someone cheats at the Sunday event, that is just weird.

the 5.0w/kg rule is just for the Thursday championships this year. It only caught out a few for this race as it was a short race. once we get into the longer races, it will catch out the real dodgy set ups and those legit riders won’t really be smashing that 5.0 max anyway. But it was still a nice little test for those top-top guys this week to see if they could control themselves..

      • Hans HM says:

Guess i have been racing too much on zwift when I even feel the need to mention the 5 w/kg rule 😉
But thanx for clearing it up – think I made the mistake because the last three hill climbs were timed as part of OMGW. Nice that blatent cheaters are removed – no fun racing against them – just saying that – at least from my pov – there is no need to remove e.g. uk hill climbing champs 😉
See you at Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne later today

  12. BareRemi says:

Short challenging climb. How to performe good at this race without getting DQ has been on my mind for a while. Dont worry, i didn’t sandbag. A problem with my stomach and some fever made this to a struggle for me. Congrats to karel who already made a great gap to a lot of the big hitters. Race for the 25 championship has begun. Great race everyone.
