MUCKERS 7pm Tuesday Race Night. 11/04/23

Rouvy Route Used: La Doyenne | Belgium | 16.22 miles | 2732 ft climbing

Route 5 from the Taste of the spring classics | Medium challenge

47 registered | 30 finishers | 5 dnf | 12 dns

7pm, Tuesday Evening ( for most of us ) and 35 people think its a good idea to race over a 16 mile route and more importantly, climb over 2700ft while doing it! 🤪🤪.While warming up, I figure that a lot of people were looking at the profile and just wondering how to cope with that horrible red uphill that comes at you around the 5 mile mark! Its the shortest of the 4 main uphill’s on this route, but the steepest! Superb route and a really good challenge.

even after 49 minutes, the top 2 came over the line under a second between them. The finish was a downhill section so i would love to know if this was decided over the crest of the last hill or was it done on the downhill section?? Anyway, well done to “luke_vin” for the gold, and “breers33” for the silver. 9 seconds later came “AndiiR” for the Bronze. Well done to these 3 who all finished with impressive average speeds of 19.4mph.

Not to far behind in 4th came long time Muckers race participant “PatrykS_Gdynia_PL” with the very strong “karel_sousek” not too far back in 5th. 6th, and still just under a minute behind first place, “lloydieDHRacing” pops over the line with the very strong, and usual podium claimer, “adampel” coming home 7th. Was this down to no teammate around to help like he normally has, or just a really strong group up front?

8th, 9th and 10th came over the line with those types of gaps between them all that ask the questions about solo rides, or did someone drop off or did someone pull away and split the group up? hope one of them lets us know. “Tuden” got 8th, “gaet40” 9th and the final mention to 10th place “robbiedoo” making it 3 British riders in the top 10! Well done.

30 of us finished this tough route. 5 gave up! So even if you came 30th, you still beat 5 other riders, so well done to all who stuck it out and finished this superb route.

please leave a comment on how the race was for yourself, especially if you can answer any questions above.

cheers everyone.

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

25th for me tonight, but 9 minutes faster than the last time i did this route last year! Considering i was laid up in bed 2 days ago with horrendous back pain, i really can’t complain at all. And why would i! My game plan of 3.0 and 80+rpm up the climbs worked nicely. fair enough I was dropped on the horrendous 2nd climb and ended up 29th at the top of this. but I didn’t give chase to the 2 riders that over took me pulling 4.0s as I wanted something in the tank for the last climb! I could see a few riders struggling on the last climb and as I tried to catch my teammate Chak, we just overtook 3 riders while going up this climb while I stayed a quarter of a mile behind Chak all the way up it. Very happy with that as I was still pulling strongly at the top of the last climb so i still had some left. No doubt Those zone 4 endurance training runs I do sometimes on these race nights helped me tonight.

After yesterday’s 3000ft climb and 26-mile ride, I thought I wouldn’t be up for today’s ride. But I started at about 3.4 W/KG and slowly increased my pace. On the first climb, I passed “Chak,” one of our best racers, and then passed a few more riders. Near the top, “Andy_UP” was closing in, and for the next two hills, we were swapping positions and overtaking riders. I was completely focused on the power I was putting out and what power “Andy_UP” was putting out, so I didn’t pay much attention to the other riders. At the top of the third climb, where the gradient sat between 4% and 2%, “Andy_UP” was right behind me. We matched each other’s pace on the last climb, and I was thinking that if “Andy_UP” beat me up this climb, he could have the “GOAT” trophy. But he started to slowly drop behind, and I pushed a little harder to see if he could catch me, but he couldn’t. I could see “Technik_II” in the distance, and I caught him. We raced to the finish, where he beat me by only 0.4 seconds. By the way even being the first “Muckers Worldwide” racer doesn’t get a mention unless your in the top 10… 🙁

    • Neil Rushby says:

lol, you got the mention, although you mentioned it yourself mucker! Well done for a really strong ride and pulling Andy up ( ohhhh, maybe that’s how he got his name after all!) as well. This route was well up your street apart from the downhill finish. 35 riders had ago at this mucker! 35!! Thanks again.

  3. S. Ludford says:

If I ever needed proof some routes don’t suit certain riders, this is it. Today was the highest Watts I have EVER done for an hour and I am not remotely competitive. I’m just hauling 98kg up steep hills as people ride past me then not gaining down steep descents as we all max out. I was in no man’s land throughout, at one point I considered waiting for teammate ‘Chak’ but realised there was no draft uphill or downhill so it wouldn’t help either rider – I pushed on in 26th position for a long long time thinking it would end like this, then slowly I started to gain, first ‘ralfz’ who quit or lost connection the second I made the catch, then ‘G.Fox’ and ‘PiotrKwiatek’ who seemed to be suffering after a very strong and fast start, then finally ‘utb-‘ who fought for position until I was able to break his resolve. I will take the positive regarding the power output and the knowledge that spikey profiles will never be races I can compete.

    • Neil Rushby says:

Hi Ste, thanks for the comment. Rides like these for us heavier riders are just a test to me! average power and cadence tests. Then next time you do it, you see if you’ve improved or not. It also teaches you about perseverance and longevity as we both had decent power left on that long last hill and overtook those who went off to fast too early. Just because i call them a race, doesn’t mean you have to use it as a race. We are completing challenges as well. Hope you don’t get put of by this type of route going forward Mucker.

      • S. Ludford says:

This ride actually reminded me of typical outdoor UK ride in my area of UK (in South Downs National Park). Always Up or Down with no flat sections – Downs on Rouvy are more fun (less pot holes and gravel). I was 99% sure it wouldn’t suit me but now 100% sure. Don’t worry Mucker, it hasn’t put me off, as long as there is a bike in front of behind, I will be racing.

As always, very nice route, very good line up. I was looking for such a route, had a time to proper warm up and have some teammates around.
But somehow I did not feel strong enough, but maybe it was just due to the strong field. So the plan was just stay stay stay at any wheel that might try to go. Breers33 tried on second hill, but I couldn’t follow. Luckily no one could so we stayed together and breers33 evaluated it as it is better to wait. So we were 6 until the last hill. I tell myself to wait for last 100m of elevation, but didn’t feel I should do some acceleration, so change it to 50m, then 40… 🙂 a then Breers33 picked up the pace. I know I should at least try to follow. This worked well fortunately and then it was about the position for the sprint between the two of us. I was not able to get to a second spot, but this showed up to be an advantage, as when started sprinting I was going 72 – so unable to be overtaken. Then there was a slight chance for breers33 in last meters, but too short. (At least ROUVY thinks that, I didn’t see the finish line photo:) )
In the end it was really really hard route, actually it feels like almost only uphill, very intense and the downhills felt so short, so no team play possible, but enjoyed that too!

    • Neil Rushby says:

well done again and thank you for commenting! i agree, it did feel more like an uphill route with 3 or 4 little breaks to get a drink and recover before we were back into climbing. Just spare a thought for all us slower riders who had to climb for longer!😅😅😅 cheers and well done again!

  5. Mike Hagen says:

Just discovered this Muckers race series. That was fun! I will try to be a regular. I need to figure out how to sprint. Made up 30 seconds on Rens on the last descent, and was ahead of him, but he must have managed to get a smidgeon of a tire ahead of me at the line. Argh!

    • Neil Rushby says:

Hi, first let me thank you for taking the time and commenting! Rens is a very strong rider and you also finished just in front of Steve who is also very strong so well done on the result. Been doing the Muckers races for a while now and i am constantly pushing them as its so much better completing these challenge routes in a race format. We race Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7pm (UK) and also do some Sunday morning rides ( which I’m guessing will be right out of your time zone though.) But the Main ones are weekday ones and they will always get a report on! Thanks again and hopefully see you on some more.

  6. Andrew Lloyd says:

First race with yourselves and I was definitely not expecting 6th place not a bad start. I’m usually a morning rider in UK due to PARKINSON’S as cycling gets me loose for the day. I’m stuck in the house cycling addict. Racing tonight is my means of escape, I can get lost for an hour it two. The competition tonight was very close and at times had to pull myself back to the guy in front. If I’d known I was only a short time from the leader I’d have pushed harder. Your gain is Bkools loss. Won some minor events and one major event with them but it was never published who had won, it was down to spreadsheets & riders messaging each other. Fun to be had here. Roll on the next race.

    • Neil Rushby says:

So Glad you found is Andrew!! We race on Tuesdays and Thursdays but its only a race format so we all start at the same time and get opportunity to draft as well. Its taken us a while to get here and we have some amazingly strong riders taking part and also some really loyal Muckers who always try to participate. But if you don’t feel like racing, just do a zone effort on it, that’s what quite a few of us do ( especially if its a double header night ). These are scheduled to help as many people complete the challenges set by Rouvy and no one needs to miss out due to thinking its just a race and not for them! Group rides don’t work in my eyes as someone always misses the point and tries to race so i’ve gone the other way and created races, but you can do what you like!! cheers for commenting and please have a look around the site while you’re here!

  7. Chris says:

    Good morning,
awesome ride, 35 participants, 5 of whom gave up. I found the 26km route with steep climbs very demanding. I finished on P14, no mention in Neils report – but I mention it here now. 😅 It was the maximum I could deliver today. Still it was one of my best results in terms of watt output 246W Normalized Power at 67 kg.
A small group of 3 formed around me, “yayarecki”, “david_ochainxxx” and “Technik_II.”, all very strong, and I was only able to leave “Technik” behind me at the end. The front group was ultra strong (probably a national training for the Tour de France 😉), congratulations to everybody, but also to the back group, well done! The long climbs were a nightmare 🥵 for many of us (especially for usually strong performing Mucker “Steve Ludford” 😄). I was very exhausted afterwards, 167 average pulse and 178 max 😱

CU next time, perhaps on Thu ?

    • S. Ludford says:

Hopefully I will be nearer to you Thursday Chris, especially if you go to Paris also. Then I am excited for the Muckers Roubaix race next Tuesday – all the muscles I train today are to be used in that race.

      • Chris says:

Couldn’t compete in Paris (The City of Love track), I had to fix my bike. I’m sure you beat my time from 3 weeks ago: 0:17:43….Did you? 😊

Paris Roubaix cannot participate either. Please be so kind and don’t beat my time from today… 😉 0:54:21 “Hell of the North” – I was so pissed today and literally flew over the cobblestones, no race, just time trial mode.

        • S. Ludford says:

Hi Chris, yes 0:17:27 in Paris, but I was in the draft of 2 monsters. I saw your Roubaix time, very strong ride. So, if I hit 25mph (40kph) I will be very close. You have set me a good target. Cheers, Steve

          • Chris says:

Well yes, but you also had a very exhausting race before! So your time is really brilliant and you will remain a very tough competition !!!
My Paris-City-of-Love ride was not a race, just time trial, but after London and Rio just before. So I weren’t really fresh for Paris, either.
I am curious about your race result in Roubaix. Just do your second-best, ok? 😉

    • Neil Rushby says:

cheers Chris, superb result as this was a strong group of riders today! i only came 25th and i was 9 minutes faster than the last time i rode this route!!! Like the winner said, it was more like a hill climb race with a few rest bits thrown in! well done again and see you Thursday PS pleeeeeeeeeese add Muckers Worldwide as your team name, you are a part of this now and really appreciate your efforts.

  8. Chris says:

Roubaix would be thrilling yes, especially after the live event on Eurosport this week. The winner was 28 years old. You have to be 28 again. 😊🙄 Even though my Garmin app fools me into believing that I’m 20 considering my fitness age. Whoever wants to understand this algorithm….
On Tuesday next week I cannot be part of it. But we will meet on Thu and Sun again I guess. I am getting stronger from ride to ride, so these Mucker races are worth every cent (or penny 😉)

Maybe I should change my strategy if there are so many steep climbs, reducing the power at the start (not 150% only 100%) and save the energy for the climbs…does that matter? I’m not sure.

    CU
    Chris

    • Neil Rushby says:

once you figure that out, please let me know.

      • Chris says:

I don’t have a clue yet, but what I usually do just before the top of a climb is, accelarating before the top the last 30sec so that I reach a good speed at the hilltop. Thereafter I keep trying to get a high hill-down ground speed, by pumping 150% into my pedals for a few seconds and relax thereafter. This way, I am faster than others downhill and can catch up a bit. What you can see on the other hand is, that my pulse downhill is very much higher than for the others. Not good. But you will have to opt for the lesser evil, don’t you? 😉
        Cheers, Chris
