MUCKERS French Adventure Race Night. 25/07/23

Rouvy Route Used: Col du Tourmalet | East | 11.23 miles | 4379 ft climbing

Route 2 from the French challenge

43 Registered | 28 finishers | 8 DNF | 7 DNS

Who’d have thought we’d actually get 36 riders on the start line for a +4000ft hill climb race, in the middle of the UK summer, on a week night. Somehow we did and thank you so much to everyone for being there at the start and having a go at this climb.

We also had a lot of our strong participants in this with regular winners taking 4 of the top 5 slots, so top 10 was going to have to be a strong effort to achieve.

“Simon_Hahnenbruch” decided to smash the 60 min barrier and also be the only one to do this with an average speed of 11.71mph! What a superb effort, with the next best rider, the strong Spaniard “Risckys_GURE” finishing 3 minutes and 24 seconds behind to claim Silver! Then just 15 seconds behind came “nelsonsnyder” with a strong result claiming 3rd place with a decent gap back to 4th.

4th over then line was the strong “karel_sousek” and then followed a minute later by the just as strong “adampel” which just goes to show how hard a top three position was tonight as these 2 are regular podium finishers!!!

6th and 7th came over the line just 10 minutes behind first with “Berty-Bassett6” just in front of “Pfeffer” who had a nice gap back to 8th which was taken by the 2nd Brit in the top 10 “srichards”

Top Muckers Worldwide rider prize goes to “MikeHagen” today with a very strong ride to 9th and the final mention goes to the German rider “Ronald78” who was only just over 15 minutes behind his fellow countryman winner in 10th!

To the next 18 riders, I wish I could list you all ( but I really can’t break with tradition….) as you finished one hell of a hill climb and 8 gave up for whatever reason, so you should all be really proud of yourselves!

Just the usual endings: ( over explained as per usual though…..)

if you’ve raced on a Muckers race, you now have the right to use Muckers Worldwide as your team name, if you so wish

if you want to join us then that’s amazing on its own, but if you want to join the WhatsApp group chat with some fellow Muckers then drop me a message with your mobile and I’ll add you and you can either sit back and just watch the chat, or jump in whenever you like. there’s about 20 of us on there now and tonight we all actively encouraged our fellow Mucker “Swifty” up this climb tonight and to catch and pass a rider just before the line! 6 of us actually got together in Belgium earlier this month to ride in the real world together and we hope to get together again next year it was that successful!

And finally, thank you to those of you that have purchased some merchandise! This is what will keep the site going, no subscriptions or charges, just buy something😉. And, remember Muckers, if you think of anything we should be selling, just drop us a message or a comment and we will get right on it. We love any suggestions.

ok, that’s it, cheers everyone and see you on the next one.

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

Can you be very happy with 23rd??? YES! well, i am. I was worries about this all day as i really struggled to get up on of the other French challenge hill climbs on Sunday, so was hoping the Monday rest day help!! Set myself a “goal of2 hours and zone 4 heart rate but as i set off, i knew i wanted to stay about 6mph to hit my goal and as the bottom part wasn’t really the climb, i set about getting some time in the bank for later on when the feared bonk came! got to the climb, and i had a decent amount in the bank and I was able to stay over 6mph all the way to the last split, when I just needed to back off a touch to feel ok again. this was a shame as I was catching Jeff and Squalo but i had to look at the bigger picture! glad I did as I didn’t bonk and ended up coming hone 22 minutes under my 2 hour target so I’m more than happy, even though i still came 5 places from last!

Dear Neil, but it is no longer possible to organize some mini championship like the one already done? Maybe you could make one with paths with a difference in altitude as usually on Tuesdays and one with flat paths usually on Thursdays. Then maybe cross the scores of both specialties, so as to increase motivation 👍🤙

    • Chris says:

yes we can all be proud of our individually achieved rankings.
My legs were still so sore from the training days before, espcially Col d’Izoard on Sunday.
I was exhausted and done tonight, Banana doping helped me out a bit, though 6 Riders overtook me – congratulations to you all. I must admit that this race had again a very strong field!!! So tonight I finished on P16, and I am proud that I could hold apart the attacking mate “Denny44” at the last kilometer. When I saw him getting closer and closer, I mobilized my last ounce of strength to get away from him. 6 overtakers are were enough for tonight 😉
Thanks Neil, for organizing these events!

  2. Steven Ludford says:

After doing Col d’Izoard yesterday I promised myself to go easy tonight and keep at 2.2w/kg to ensure a sub 2 hour ride. A few Muckers suggested they were also happy with 2 hours, until the flag dropped … and they were gone into ‘Zone 6 Land’. I smuggly thought “I’ll see you later”. No, never to be seen again as the boys dug in and rode strongly on a relentless climb. I was quite happy spinning away until 3 miles to go, teammate ‘Swifty’ was showing signs of catching the 2 riders ahead of him who were matching his power efforts to keep position. I decided to go hard and see if I could help him bridge across, or at least make him panic that I was coming after him. He didn’t need me, he made it across and split the 2 riders in a really impressive effort, I never got there anyway, I should have gone earlier but my tired legs disagreed.

  3. Mike Hagen says:

Hill climbs are not my strong suit, and I was apprehensive about today.  My first ever Rouvy race was the Sani Gravel Climb in March last year, and I was destroyed.  It’s funny: Simon, Nelson, and Karel were 1 – 2 – 3 in that race, and it took them 35 – 36 minutes, about 20 minutes faster than me.  Today they were only about 15 minutes ahead after an hour.  That’s progress!  Today my goal was to hold 3.8 W/kg the whole way, including the first few flat (ha!) kms.  nielsbrynnum and Berty-Bassett6 were just ahead at the start, and it was very hard to not go with them.  Ended up riding with lrollin for the first few km, then when the real climb started just eased ahead.  Caught Niels about halfway, and was caught in turn by srichards with about 5 – 6 km to go.  I was fading then and trying to choke down a food bar.  Got it down and it helped.  Averaged 3.76 W/kg and HR was in Zone 7 for 70% of the way, so overall I’m quite pleased.

tonight great and tough race guys, I’m slowly recovering my leg after the holidays and tonight I got off to a good start. I was dancing from 15th to 18th place, but then several rockets passed me 😜. I wanted to finish better but I’m happy with 21st place because I managed in the last km to catch jeff65 and pass him after he wouldn’t give up 3 times. I always kept an eye on Neil trying to figure out if he still had energy and then finally when there were 1.5km to go we were all satisfied. Nice sweaty challenge guys 💪

    • Neil Rushby says:

i did get close at one point but then you pushed off again and I really couldn’t match it. well done!

    • Jeff says:

Probably one of the toughest ride’s I’ve done on Rouvy for a long time.Tried to pace myself early on riding with Mucker and Swifty, this definitely wasn’t a drafting, so just kept riding at a pace I was happy with, managed to pull away from the duo. Passed quite a few dnf riders, which spurred me on, managed to overtake Lamber Manuel, but he wasn’t giving up,had a great little battle with him ,but he got the better of me 1 km from the finish. I’m not a climber, but really enjoyed this challenge, thanks for organising as always 👍

      • Lamber Manuel says:

Nice final challenge dear Jeff, although I was feeling good, I lost 5 positions, and when I saw that on the red tips I could get close…I risked accelerating with 3 km to go, a little early. I thought, either I can pass or I burst with no energy a few meters from the finish. Too bad I didn’t get more miles with you and Neil. Thanks for the challenge, see you next race 💪

  5. Berty bassett6 says:

I sort of perversely enjoy these sort of climbs , with everything happening in slow motion . Started off well but knew I wouldn’t be able to keep that up so was hoping just to keep a steady rhythm and not blow up , always panicking that someone behind would up it a bit . Caught one of the flyers as he slowed a bit and I thought for a couple of minutes that I might catch another until he put a spurt on and I knew where I stood ! Really enjoy these races thanks – I don’t know how to answer back on the Rouvy bit as I press reply but nothing happens ? I was tempted to ask to join the WhatsApp group but if you are all gasbags and phone pings all the time it would send me nuts !! Don’t know what to do ! Technology is a cruel mistress – well done all – is it another climb on Thurs !! 3rd one in a week !!!

  6. Ryan( Ryanio-Bianchi says:

Was a good route and enjoy the climb, was around 15th place for the time I was on as had other commitments so I knew I could complete the route but thought something better than nothing. I had a good average pace for the time I was on at around 3.2W/kg which was about 8mph on the 8% slopes. So would have been looking to finish around the 1hr 20m mark. Before I departed I was trying to chase down kin Kwan and Sean Muzzy who was about 500ft ahead which had stabilised. Looking forward to the race series ( championship )

  7. Niels Brynnum says:

I had a tuff day yesterday at Tourmalet, the legs felt quite heavy 😰 😰 but got an okay start of the race, even though I was not able to catch the anyone from the front group. Halfway up the climb I got passed by a strong MikeHagen 💪💪💪 I tired for last part to find a steady pace with small attempts to catch MikeHagen and Ronald78 but didn’t managed. I reach level 50, which is professional and I decided some time ago that when I reached professional 😉 I would join Muckers Worldwide team.
