MUCKERS LA VUELTA THURSDAY RACE NIGHT. 07/09/23

ROUVY Route Used: La Vuelta 2023 | Stage 12 – Zaragoza | 13.24 miles | 193.57ft climbing

Route 2 from the Tranquilo challenge, and, Route 6 from the El Diablo challenge

41 Registered | 27 finishers | 4 DNF | 10 DNS.

Just the one race tonight and at a delayed start time of 7:30pm (UK) as not to clash with a ROUVY race that was starting at our usual start time. But, luckily for us, we still had 31 riders on the start line ready to try the flat 13 mile route!

The top 3 could have been in any order! That’s how close they finished with “transberg” getting gold, “Stefan793” the silver and “orthostice” the bronze. Not our usual podium at all and these guys took there opportunity and got on that podium! Well done!

We then had another 3 way battle for the next 3 positions with under a second between them all, and only 9 seconds behind the top 3! 4th goes to “nelsonsnyder” ( it’s been a while mucker!) 5th to “MatthiasHeil” ( it’s been even longer mucker duck!!) and 6th to French regular “lrollin”!

7th and 8th goes to the Portugesse duo of “leonelcunha” and “rfelix78” in that order, then we have a duo of Muckers Worldwide riders with “MikeHagen” in 9th and in 10th and the final mention spot tonight, our very own pocket rocket ( Not typed that for a while 😉) “Andy_UP”. Well done guys!

Thank you all for racing with us tonight. its been great having so many come back through the summer that we can’t wait to see what happens as we go into the next few months! Talking of the future, please have a quick read of the blog in the link attached that explains 2 little rules we are implementing from October.:

Cheers everyone and hope to see you soon on the next Muckers race!

Hard hard rides Tuesday, and also Wednesday.  Warming up today, my legs were leaden.  Then the start glitched: I was pedaling but my avatar wasn’t moving.  WTF?  Finally got going, but the lead group was out of reach.  But after riding with lrollin and tranberg both races on Tuesday, it was exciting to see them first and second at the halfway split, and the win to Tranberg.  Awesome!  For me, I was in 10th a couple of km after the start, and thinking I’ll just stay there and get a mention.  But Dok_PS was gaining, and eventually caught me.  Full credit to him because I hadn’t waited for him.  Shortly after, Andy_UP, with a great effort, got on with Dok and me. So now I’m wondering how Andy and I can work together to drop Dok?  Maybe we can both get a top 10?  I was going as hard as I could without dropping Andy, and Andy was working his ass off to stay 3 m back.  Every now and then he’d do a pull, and that was really good to let me recover a bit.  Somehow we dropped Dok. Somehow we caught and passed lenb.  With about 4 km to go, we were gaining on rfelix78, only 200 m back.  I decided to go for it; can I catch him?  stranger things have happened.  100 m back with 1 km to go, and 45 m back with 500 m to go, but that’s as close as I got. But 9th for me and 10th for Andy.  Great teamwork, Mucker!

What a race. I’m no sprinter but did decide to do a hard pull after a (too short) period of recevory from overtraining. I got in a very good group from the start but decided to catch up with Mike Hagen, but he’s too strong for me and then my Chili con carne decided to push its way out the wrong way and I’d to let it go. Then a group came up from behind and we had a great work. But still that chili…….. and then, as always, I’s not aware a short outburst on a small climb and I dropped like 25 m behind. I tried to catch up with group but was not strong enough. Ended in a 19th place and 253 watt avg. Good enough for me on an evening race 🙂
    Great race Muckers 🙂

I wasn’t going to race. Well we all know how that ended… Saw a big group in front of me with Neil, about 90m ahaid. I thought, ok, let’s close that gap, and maybe end in top 20. Had to go 4,2w/kg for what seemed endless. Cought up with the group, tried to recover. Saw DonJulio alone about 30m ahaid, so closed that gap. Somehow, he decides to go hard with me in his wheel to close the gap to 2 other riders. Thanks DonJulio! Then he just droped power and he let go. OK? Now the pressure was on my sholders to give his effort justification by ending good. Had a hard time to keep Mike’s wheel and we (he) managed to drop all those with us. Even caught a rider and after a while, he had to let go too, so I was racing for 9th and 10th now! Did a pull to make the gap big enough then kept Mike’s wheel until 1km to go. 10th, a mention and a great team effort. Very fun to be part of this great team!

Now it was a nice experiment by me. After Tuesdays race I decided not to push it to the limits, let’s make somekind of reco-ish race, if such thing exists 🙂
We, with Mucker1974 seem to be very-very close at strength it turns out on every race (I guess also in age, and weight), so I asked him previously what’s his plan: he said he’ll only concentrate to a steady 3W/Kg average.
My general mistake on the bike is that I overpush at the beginning, then I just try to pick up my parts from the road, and if there is some sprint at the end, it is usual that no parts are left there from me…
So the experiment was NOT to push at the start, and then stay at a steady keepable pace. And a big surprize at the end: my numbers were EXACTLY the same (bpm, avg watts) as on Tuesday. Maybe my gadgets went wrong… really don’t understand because my feeling was I really did it in a softer way.

  5. Tranberg says:

I was first! Don’t know how that was possible after not even finishing in top 20 last Tuesday. But the delayed start gave some extra time, so I actually did a dedicated warm-up for once, and it seemed to do wonders as my numbers were better than ever.

I was a bit surprised to land in the front group after a fast start. And then I cautiously stayed at the back because I was fearing to get dropped as soon as the pace increased. However, I started to be a bit more confident around halfway and started to take some pulls as the group also diminished to just 4 riders. Unfortunately, I could not see Stefan in the group until the very end, so that made group dynamics a bit more challenging. At the end, “nelsonsnyder” was closing in on the front group and were just around 30 m’s behind when “orthostice” made some big attacks to make the last part chaotic and every man for himself. The last 1 km was actually just one long cruel sprint and I still don’t know how I managed to win on that photo-finish. But it was very enjoyable!

Thank you for this évent….my first Muckers race. Had fun even if I did not manage to persuadé my partner of the day to cooperate smoothly 😌.
