MUCKERS MAY CHAMPIONSHIP RACE 2. 09/05/24

Rouvy Route Used: Bormio to Tirano | 22 miles | 311ft climbing

Introduction:

2nd round of the Muckers Monthly championships means we are back to full checks of the top 50 so hopefully we are friends on Rouvy ( or strava ) and we can see your hr data. otherwise you will be automatically designated a “NED” and no points awarded. But remember this is just if you are interested in the Muckers side of things, you will still be on the ROUVY leaderboards and the finishing pages for the route and the challenge, just we have our rules for this year and they are what they are.

DOWNHILL!!!! yes we have 300ft of climbing, but its not a flat profile at all, its a downhill, with some kickers and a longish hill near the end. This will be a draft heavy race with some fast average speeds and “should” be great fun!

5 start times for this so lets see how the other 4 race times did before we head to the main race and the championship positions!

Under 50 starters so its just the top 10 mentions, but as we always check the top 50 for data, this means everyone gets a check. This race was as fast and as frantic as predicted but a great race! We had a strange glitch tonight though, with a rider who is new to our races (how do i know this you ask?) as I got the pop-up message that my friends request has been sent when i clicked on request friendship (if I have already sent a friends request in the past which I do to all riders getting checked, you get no pop up at all) so this tells me they are new to my races. But they were also on a TT bike so something very strange going on, but, they are a NED to me so they get removed anyway. So one that rider is removed, we have pretty much a whos-who of strong Riders from all over ROUVY.

Muckers Podium mentions tonight go to “BareRemi” for the gold, “Gil.Mad.io” for Silver and “Stefan_Schmidt” for the Bronze!

The rest of the top 10 mentions go to “karel_sousek”, “Stefan793”, “badeskum”, “lrollin”, “basak.oztan”, “DonMatteo_07” and “nelsonsnyder”

Well done everyone else for finishing and i hope you had a great time.

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

what a great race! set off hard and was with the top group but blowing! hit a little kicker, stood up to power over it and was in 3rd place, but by the time this sunk in, i was swamped, 13th/15th now and the top pack are out of the draft! No idea what happened but this is where i am! we get into a very fast grove, i think we are 12th to 21st and i concentrate on being in as much draft as possible, but not getting spat out the back when the flatter parts hit and the group dig in! this happened about 3 times and i was soooo close to getting dropped. This new drafting algo is not the easy state that some report!

as we approach the last long climb, that most of us were waiting and worried about, the kick happened and as i pass Ste who has given up the chase, i can only grit my teeth and try to hang on a bit longer in the ever diminishing draft… once it went over 50ft and i lost it, i had to sit down and then just focus on not letting the stupid strong power house Ste get any thought of a sniff of a back wheel as if he did, he’d out sprint me!

came over the line 20th and totally spent. got one of my lowest average powers tonight but felt id rode as hard as i could more times than i normally would! Absolutely loved it!

    • Roeboe says:

Nice race everyone, I was behind you and another mucker jersey wearer, when we lost connection with the front group. I did not see it happening as I only had 4 in the nearby list and some avatars seem to have been blurred. Then we had that final sprint on the last kickr and I barely managed to close the gap to grochang. Sadly sprinting was no use because we were going at max speed at the finish. it was my first muckers race in months because work mostly makes it impossible for me on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to ride. hope to see you all again in more races like this!

  2. Steven Ludford says:

A downhill race? Yes please. Flag dropped and straight into the ‘sorting process’. I have the option of ‘suicide group’, ‘get head kicked in group’, ‘fast but manageable group’ or ‘big fish in small pond group’. I opt for the ‘get head kicked in group’ and proceed to getting my head kicked in for the next 40 minutes. I was definitely one of the small (95kg!) fish in this group which was driven hard by MatthiasHeil, yvon86 and Mucker Squalo delle Alpi. I did put my face on the front occasionally and tried to give guys brief draft but it was a token gesture as I knew it wasn’t a great idea for me. The whole race I was looking at the route profile and the small lump near the end, for me it was a mountain and I knew my race would end there, but could Mucker1974 do his usual ‘longer than me’ surge on a short climb, or will he ‘crack’, he did, and he didn’t, great job Mucker. It was ultimately a solo ride to the line and 21st place on the day but I enjoyed getting a kicking and being with some strong riders.
    Race stats: Age : 57, Weight : 95kg, IF=1.015
    Averages : 154bpm, 282w, 2.97w/kg.

interesting championship race, at least a bit of glory even for us heavy hitters every now and then 😜, I managed to stay with a good group between 12th and 20th place, everyone helping out as best they could, this is the Muckers spirit … like Steven, I also kept an eye on the end of the route, there was the key. First climb went well, perhaps better than expected, second climb and the group split as expected. I find myself with MatthiasHeil, and now a deejavu comes back to me… 😬, this time I don’t shoot, we accompany each other towards the finish line, but I know he’s about to shoot, the ball starts, I grit my teeth and in the end this time a smile from the shark is imprinted in the final photo 💪.
Thanks to all the companions tonight, Neil, Andy_Up, Grochanang, Rens, Roeboe and yvon86

  4. Basak Oztan says:

Full gas but more manageable compared to the Castiglione race, partly because we saved a ton of watts on draft and had more to spare for the kickers. Race started with a rocket launch as usual. We quickly formed a big group in the front, we lost a rider or two on along the kickers, most surprising names were Nelson and Ludwig. Both very much stronger riders than me; it just shows anyone could get dropped with this new drafting. As we were sailing high speed down the hill I noticed those two teamed up about 500 meters behind us and started a big comeback. Surely they weren’t going to catch a group of 10 riders on a downhill, right? Boy I was so wrong, I don’t know how they did it but they made it back. I think this is the main story of this race, really. Now we are getting close to the final stretch, you know the main action is going to take place in the very final kicker but there were couple bumps just before that and GilMad made sure no one gets there with fresh legs, he made couple big bursts on those little ones, group was together but heart rates up again before the final one. As the top guns made their double digit sprint up that climb, I accepted the result but Don Matteo was within reach. Stayed with him on the final stretch, steep downhill in the end favored my clyde weight better, and managed get in just before him. Downhills are easy, racing is not. It was again a killer, full intensity workout, Normalized Power right at threshold IF 1.0. Likely we won’t have a route like this again for a long while, it was fun.

  5. Karel Soušek says:

Four races in 4 days, today over the same course like on Monday. Mostly descending route, but with so so different scenario. There was guy ahead on tt bike and we all tried to keep up with him, until we realized it is impossible. He finished “1st” but guess he will be DSQ due this Rouvy glitch, as tt bikes are not allowed in mass race.

The standard race was all about leading group of -12 riders until we lost Nelson +1 who got dropped by -200m for many minutes, until they appeared in leading group suddenly. But this did not change much anything at the end, as we got into big sprint finale. Over small bump i lost quite lot to the leaders and was only able close 30m gap to Stefan and fight for the 3rd place. Wheel of fortune favored Stefan, so i could wrap up four races in four days with fourth place, very good! Thank you all who joined!
