MUCKERS OCTOBER CHAMPIONSHIP RACE 2 OF 4. 10/10/23
ROUVY Route Used: L’Etape Cunha | Brazil | 15.81miles | 3221.78ft climbing
99 Registered | 75 Starters | 63 finishers (16 no HR data) | 12 DNF | 24 DNS
75 Riders on the start line for this 3000ft hill climb that is round 2 of this months championship! We still have a few who aren’t supplying HR data so if you want to be included in the championship results or mentions, then please request friendship (Mucker1974) and have heart rate data transmitting.
“Alieno79” smashed yet another Muckers race out of the part, but didn’t have as massive a gap over the chasing pack as before with “Tuden” only 23 seconds behind in 2nd and “nelsonsnyder” just another 7 seconds further behind in 3rd. Class riding guys!
Team Adam-Chirs Duo next and slightly more off the pace than normal with “adampel” coming over the line just over 4 minutes behind the winner in 4th, then leading a pack of three riders came “hinsbergen” in 5th, just in front of “leonlcunha” in 6th and “Peters7” in 7th.
In a little bit of no-mans land comes “anatso” in 8th then Top Muckers Worldwide rider for tonight “tomlerieger” gets a very nice 9th, just in front of regular racer “Grochang” who rounds out the top 10.
But, we had over 50 on the start line so we get to give special mentions to another 10 riders!
Lets start with regular French rider “lrollin” in 11th, who’s got to be ready to be our 1st French Mucker!!?? Then comes the not-so-easy to type 😉“neminemlaedere” in 12th, and 2nd Muckers Rider “Kylofski” in 13th. Next is the 3rd Muckers rider in the top 20 “denny44” who get a nice bump up to 14th place , with Spanish rider “Chorus” in 15th and this riders been racing with us for even longer than lrollin and must be even more ready to be our First Spanish Mucker??
“Gazinho” claims 16th for the 4th Muckers Worldwide Team, with “Groenen” over the line next in a strong 17th place. 18th place comes Canadian Mucker (that’s 5 team riders in the top 20!!) “MikeHagen”, just in front of “grep1” in 19th.
So the last mention for tonight, after all the removals for those with no HR data, goes to British rider “robbiedoo” who comes over the line just over 12 minutes behind the winner. Really strong riding all the way through this top 20!
Well done to all 20 of you! Have you got your special edition T-Shirt that celebrates this achievement in a fun way and maybe even in your language?? No!!?? Go and Have a look at the shop Muckers, you never know when you’re going to get a mention again! 😁😉.
Also a massive thank you to everyone that joined us on this race, having so many at the start really gives us all that extra motivation to push that bit harder than we would if it was just a normal “just ride” ride.
cheers , and see you at the next one!

considering I was off work yesterday sick in bed, I reckon i did ok to get this finished! 75 on the start and as we got going, i actually felt ok at 3.0 w/kg and thought I could keep that going…. but i was soon into top end zone 6 heart rate so needed to back off if wanted to finish this race. sort of stayed around 55th place, then the last climb came and I was really struggling by then. couldn’t even keep 200 watts and I now had pressure from behind from Tony Jager, so I kept letting him close to 500ft, then id whack it up a few gears, stand up and go till I got the gap to nearer 700ft , then let off, sit down and recover! once that gap closed to 500ft, I’d repeat it! it worked and I got to the top and then it was easy to pull out a better gap as i was on the flats and he was still climbing, but that pressure was not what I wanted to deal with at all tonight, but now its over, I’m totally glad he was there!
My plan to take it easier on the first climb was out the window as soon as the race started. Of course it was. Sigh. But on this climby, roller-coaster like course, seemed to be riding with a lot of different groups at one time or another. There was a lot of flux and movement in positions with riders moving up and down. Made it fun! Rode with rmadden1 on the flats before the last climb. Got away from him (wasn’t expecting that) and reeled in a couple of riders on the last hill. Didn’t run out of gas for a change. Happy with that!
In the end I managed to find a good feeling with this route even though my legs had been on fire for a running trail for two days. I had to manage myself because even though it was short, this race had a lot of altitude difference. Looking at the numbers at the start and everything else, I had set myself the goal of staying at least below 50th.
It’s a shame I wasn’t able to catch rogerstrainer and gunnera because with 2 km to go I thought I could do it… even though I was very careful to control the movements of Svard and mareckii behind me who never let me get bored. A good 36th at the end 💪
was happy to get back racing again went better than expected was with Mike hagen for large amounts of the race but unlike Mike I did run out of steam on the last climb great race
Since I had Covid last week, I had a race within a race. The idea was to stay in HR Z4. It was like riding with the handbrake on. Boy is it difficult to stay in your zone while others pass you by you know you can normally follow. But I persisted, until after half an hour, I catched up with rogerstrainer. When he wanted to drop me, something snapped, the handbrake got broken and I forgot about my race in the race. The HR went into Z5. At some point I caught up with S Ludford and together we closed the gap on Leon Ledoux. On the last climb it was every man for himself and I thought “forget about it, I already am in Z5”. I forgot about everything and just went up the hill. At the end I saw Slyfly, what a cool name, I have to catch him. I even got into the wheel of Lyndon and almost passed him on the finish line. After the ride I had to cough a bit…damn why can’t I restrain myself.
Still having a healing leg but had a great start. Was easy riding 3-3.5 w/kg halfway of the 968 meters of hight when suddently my stomach had its own live. Gas in the stomach was so high that I even couldn’t reach the handlebars and had to drop down to below 2.0 w/kg for the last 350 ish meters up. The pain was so severe that I wanted to quit but thanks to Mucker1974 for trying to pull be home and Andy for telling me I could do it. Those last meters was like giving birth and finally I know what my wife ment telling me many years ago she didn’t want more kids :-p
Once again, beaten by Tom Rieger at the finish-line. can’t get him off my back! Great effort Tom and some fight I had with lrolling going back and forwards in this 2. hilly race👍
I went all dead trying to keep up with Leonel Cunha and Peter7, so had to find my own pace on the last long ramp. My mind said just keep it over 4 watts but my legs struggle too much just to keep it over 3.5W🥵
Had to dig deep for making the last gab to Lrolling and holding Toms wheel
Keep racing guys and see you all on Thursday 🚴🏼♂️💨
I decided not to go crazy at the off and roll with whatever group that came together, I was lucky enough to have found Denny who actually paced this perfectly at around 3.7-3.8 I kept ignoring the climb clock as was ridiculous 😅 we managed to bridge the group ahead just before the last climb which gave me the chance to get a few more places. I couldn’t keep Denny’s pace and dropped off slightly for the last 10mins. Even though I enjoyed it I didn’t love it, at no point I felt I could make a move or even think about tactics. For me that’s where climbing races suffer compared to more varied terrain. I know I’m only 1 of many but that just me, I know we have challenges to meet and understand why you use them.
**Round 2 of the Championship – Hill Climb Race**
This is my kind of race. Before the race, my goal was to make it into the top 30, and I would’ve been happy with any rank in this range.
The race began with a decent climb, and during the initial ascent, I managed to pass a few other racers. By the time I reached the top, I was confident I had secured a position within the top 30. At this point, I started aiming for the top 25.
I found myself riding alongside “Rens” and a few others. To be honest, I was primarily focused on the next climb. When we hit the second of the three climbs, I continued to gain ground, moving up a few more places. By the end of this hill, I was once again riding in a group, this time with “Denny44,” “Gazinho,” “Chorus,” and “Groenen.”
From previous races, I knew that “Denny44,” “Gazinho,” and “Chorus” were very strong riders. I had never ridden with or seen “Groenen” before, so he was either new to the Muckers Races or a formidable competitor.
We stuck together during the small climb, but as we reached the final climb, I began to pull away, pushing hard at 4.0W/KG. I managed to overtake “MikeHagen” and “grep1,” both of whom were known for their strength. Now, I was in the top 20, and it seemed likely that I would get a mention in the Muckers Race report.
With less than 1 mile to go, I passed “hj2010,” propelling me into the top 15. It was a challenging race, but I knew the next two races were flat, so it was crucial to earn points in the first two rounds. So far, I’m around 14th in the Championship, and I hope to maintain a position within the top 20. Thanks for another fantastic race, Muckers!
Lanzarote 11:00, Gatwick 15:00, M25 16:00, Home 17:30, Massive Kebab 18:00, Muckers Start Line 19:00. I forgot to mention 18:59, one last blow of the nose and then an ominous drip, a nose bleed! Stuffed some toilet roll up my nostril and hopefully I can pull it out after 15 minutes … I breathe through my mouth racing anyway. Started about 3.0, 3.2, trying to gauge the groups around me, a very large group containing teammates Kyle, Rens, Daniel and a few others was only a few meters ahead and riding steady, I could have gone with them but had to make the calculation that these guys would drop me like a brick on today’s climbing so I held back slightly into a group of 4/5 riders – pulled out the ‘bloody’ tissue and found myself with Andy_UP, I tried to assist Andy on the flatter sections and held his wheel uphill but could sense he was on a much better day than myself and had to let him chase the riders ahead. Long, long, solo ride from that point but always had people close by to keep it interesting, quite satisfied with the work-out.
was happy with how the race went it was better than expected was with or near Mike hagen for most of it but unlike Mike I did ran out of gas on the last climb some strong riding by Muckers in the race well done
No real tactics or drafting on this race, so I made a pacing plan. 3.3w/kg on the uphill, 3.5 to 4 on steep red sections, 2.9 on the flat and even less on the downhill. That should take me to the finish line empty but without bonking, around 1h15min.
Tried to ignore the riders around me and not to focus on my 47th position on the first hill. Stick to the plan. I know I will ride my fastest time if I keep my pacing plan. S. Ludford tried to pull for me first 1/3rd of the race, and actually doing a great job to give me draft on the few sections it was possible. Thanks for that! I didn’t have the best day, so had to slow down slightly on the 2nd part of the last hill, but focused on holding position. Ended 35th so gained 12 positions without speeding up or slowing down. Ended under 1h14min so all in all, my plan worked nicely.
hill climb without any flat sections is not my favorite. I am just to heavy to be a good climber. especially at the climbing parts with more than 10% i have to go into the deep red zone try not to loose to much time. because it is a chmpionship race i tried to start fast and don’t held to much energy back. This is not the normal way of racing for me but i didn’t want to loose to much time to the strong riders. Even my “fast” start wasn’t really fast for the other riders and i was around position 25. I tried to go with 3.7 W/kg and was happy to maintain this until the last climb. No real tactics. I tried to stay with kyle but couldn’t follow him. Was really hard at the last climb and my legs were tired. I was slowly running out of gas but was fighting for each position. Was great fun even for hill race. Looking forward to the next race. Mix of flat and hill climb on Thursday. Don’t know yet what this will bring to us. 🙂
Were shell I start 🤔, I know thanks for a super route. Having just started to recover after a bad bout of covid I was not sure were my fitness was as I have only turned my legs over on Sunday. My intention was to ride with in myself. 321 and whats going on 60+ riders in front already 😳. I set my pace and was moving up the field were I saw muckers 75 a few places up so he was my goal. So we were together as we started to climb and by my surprise I started to move away, I felt comfortable so kept on going. Next on the list was Steven Ludford and Andy up, so off I went picking up rides on my way and trying to form a group, but as you move to the front they seem to push that little harder to get past you 🙃 so I kept my pace and ended up riding it on my own. I caught Steven and got with in 450m to Andy up by the end and was very pleased how it went. Maybe covid is the new super food 🤔 I mean bug for cyclist. Till the next tim🚴♂️
The race of the evening was on paper right up my ally. Lots of climbing and with the possibility of a sprint final if it came to that. Looked at the start list and there are really many riders that you don’t really know, and you can’t use the personal FTP to see the strength of the rider as they are often much too low or very optimistic set😁 So I had to concentrate on the usual suspects. It was also well-known guys who quickly took the lead and ran away. Alieno79, Nelsonsnyder and myself. However, it didn’t take many kilometers before the problems started to rain down on me. NaN’s🙄🙄 I’ve tried before it’s happened a few times. But this was absolutely insane. All the time I lost 20-30 meters, which I then had to pick up again. I think I had about 50 NaN’s spread over the whole route. Nelson was a gentleman and waited on a great many times. With about 10 km to go, I had a NaN that cost me 350m😡 but I managed to fight back. I just managed to go to the front, and then got another one that cost me 300m again🥺 I was so angry that I could have smashed my hand through my TV screen (good thing I didn’t, since I have to use it again on Thursday 😁 ) But the battle for victory was over, as neither the strength nor the few km that remained were no longer sufficient. So I set the fastest possible pace and caught Nelson a few km before the finish, but Alieno79 was gone. Was able to finish second, which under the circumstances was far more than I could have dared to hope for. Totally smashed after tonight’s route, and with a lesson to remember to download the routes in the future.
