MUCKERS TUESDAY RACE NIGHT. 19/12/23

RACE 8 OF 13 RACES/EVENTS IN DECEMBER

ROUVY Route used Through Moravain Hills | Czech Tour | Stage 1 | 19.2 miles | 1519 ft. climbing

133 Registered | 111 Starters | 100 Finishers | 11 DNFs | 22 DNS

Knew this was going to be a good race route and it really didn’t disappoint!!. Also you guys didn’t disappoint either as this challenge has been out for a while now, yet, we still had an amazing 111 starters on the line for this route!! I really hope you all enjoyed as much as we did!

Italian rider “luca_ma” and German rider “HSVclaude” claim 1st and 2nd tonight, but as these 2 riders aren’t up at the sharp end of the championship table, its 3rd place “karel_sousek” who once again gets another better points haul than his rivals with a nice 3rd place. We then have Team Adam-Chris duo “hinsbergen” and “adampel” getting the next mentions, then in 7th and 8th comes 2nd and 3rd in the championship “Stefan_Smit” and “lrollin”. These 2 keeping the pressure on each other and the championship leader! British team mates from team Moon Riders “RocketRoy” and “Cervelokevin” come over the line next rounding out the top 10.

Top placed Muckers Team rider “Grochang” gets a superb 11th place, with “s.p”, “s.cata” and “Grep.” coming next with the added bonus of nice short names so I don’t worry about typos!! 😉. 16th goes to the 2nd Muckers over the line “tomlerieger” just in front of “A2-569-DIEGO-DONATI” who just pips 3rd Mucker “neilsbrynnum” who gets 18th.

We then have our top placed Woman but she’s a NED so can’t mention her…… So final mention, and I’m sure his first mention as well, goes to Canadian rider “anatso” Well done and you may now go and buy a special mention T-Shirt as I think we might have a few “Canadian” versions left 🙄.

100 Finishers tonight and that’s got to be down to this route just being a great racing route! Well done everyone and thank you so much for joining us. The next race is on Thursday. Link below:

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

In the absence of ‘The Chairman’ I volunteered to make my debut in ‘blinkybob’s pain cave on bike No.2 with two screens so I see both Rob’s and my progress. I hoped we could team up and share the draft but the early climb ruined that idea and we ended up 0.2 mile apart for the whole race. I enjoyed the experience even though communication of remaining race climbing, distance and gradient changes was bloody hard at 2.8w/kg. Hooked up with Muckers Mick & Jeff towards the end and finally got some draft before that last grind to the line. My first try on a ‘wheel on’ smart trainer tonight, quite enjoyed it but the bike fit wasn’t perfect, especially 175mm cranks (normally 170mm), only a 28 rear gear (normally 32) and very strict instructions not to stand due to a creaking frame … somehow I still reached a decent 95rpm average. Happy with the session and hopefully I’ll get invited back one day.

another jump up the leaderboard, this time 3 places to 15th! very happy also that I’m now the 4th best to have missed just 1 race. its going better than expected. so to this race… LOVED IT! Set off hard and knew I’d done well as i was around the names i normally type in my reports! I knew this wasn’t the group I’d be going the line with so recovered in the drafts as much as possible until i found my “pack”

Now, I don’t mind admitting that when i saw SR-71 I was very interested indeed. This guy usually has a brilliant beginning and middle to a race and then I sometimes start to reel him in later, so to try and stay with him this early, well, that was now my goal! We had a nice group, someone would break away, or start the climbs better, but we’d always re group. I’d decided earlier to make my break on the very last climb so was drafting as much as possible to save energy…

As we approached the last climb, we had onerider quite far up, but my 2 rivals “rouvy1bryon” and “SR-71” dropped me before the climb and i thought i’d already blown it. but it was a long hill, i knocked it up a few gears, stood up and just paced it at around 4-5w/kg and prayed id make it to the top. legs were ok, HR not so! We all passed the one rider that had gotten away on the bend of the climb, then i got rouvy1, then i caught SR!! but i was shot! i recovered on his wheel but he started to gap me again! one last knock up the gears and stand up??? go on then!!! over took him and he didn’t come with me!!!! THANK GOD!!!! got the gap to that magic 100ft ( no idea why, but i always feel okay when the gap hits that magic number!) and then just watched that gap over the line. Yes i know it was all just for 59th place but it felt like a victory to me!

Killer race. Strong group that launched like a rocket right off the start. Big w/kg’s in the first minute to get over the top of that little kicker, then it became a HIIT workout, Z5+Z6 over the small hills, then recover on downhills. over and over again. Not easy for a big guy to keep with those 5-6w/kg attacks. At times I got stuck solo but most of the race I had great company…flyger, escorpio, teamojo, SwissChris69, and of course SillySilNL (she almost killed me on that final hill before finish). Finished 41st overall. IF 0.99. Good workout. Another great Muckers race.

    • SillySilNL says:

I don’t think I ever did a HIIT workout like this Basak Oztan, and those 5-6 W/ kg attacks were brutal. Sadly I had to give up after 20 km and rode the last 10 km alone. I did see I was closing in on you, but that was mainly because I saw HeikeHardt trying to get closer to me 🥵. Really didn’t have the legs anymore to get any closer to you 😉. Great race!

  4. Mike Hagen says:

Great course. Rolling ups and downs, more downs than ups, thinking it would be really fun. But these days I can’t seem to ride with the riders I think I can ride with, so in spite of a maximal effort I was solo again after 7 km. Svard and Benjamin_Rossen eventually caught up, and we hauled in MiguelSousa, rode together for a while. Then I smelled rubber burning . . . WTF? is my trainer belt afire? I don’t think we were pushing *that* many watts! But we have a puppy in the house now and I’d put up a barrier to keep her away from moving parts. Part of the barrier was rubbing on the flywheel — I hope that is what it was. Anyway Ard and I got away from the other two before the last hill. I was slowly pulling away from him when he suddenly blew by me. Must be nice to be young!

    • El_Tractor says:

Congrats on the puppy! Although they demand a lot of work, enjoy it when it’s little, they grow up to fast 😉

    • Andy_UP says:

Hope to see you around me again soon. I always feel you should be in my group, kicking my butt like you did so many times before.

That was a hell of a ride. I have to start by saying I gave it my all and finished in 60th place and I am super happy with that result. The field was full of super strong riders, kudos to all of you.

I may not have gotten a mention in the top 20 but I got the biggest mention ever by Neil in his comment.

I started this race a little different than normal, I pushed off at a medium-hard pace knowing there was a down hill and I’d be able to draft. I was hoping I could save some energy for the hills. And it seemed it worked. I was in a group with Baggers, Squalo, DokPS, hupnkola, hoppy and tieutieu. This group is slightly above my power but I was feeling good riding with them. As we came to the second bigger climb I missed a gear change and was stuck in the big ring. I almost came to a stop. Luckily it was a climb so after I crunched through the gear change the last guy in the group was only 50 feet ahead of me. But this also allowed the following group to catch me. Neil was in this group and he and I mixed it up the rest of the ride. We worked with each other and pushed each other. Using the draft of other riders when we could and jumping gaps to move up. Toward the end we caught RouvyBryon and I knew I was in trouble. It was me against team Muckers, and I was exhausted. We pushed ahead, I was trying to take wheels but had to watch for them to jump. I was planning my own attack, looking for the right time to go. I pulled a little gap on the flat before the final climb and went into the climb trying to ahow enough power to scare them out of trying to bridge back. I didn’t have enough. Neil came around me. I gave one last effort in the final sprint but I was gassed. Neil got me but I held on for 60th.

Du to my travelling, this was only my 2nd race in this Series. It was a nice race I started around 55th position and moved up into the top 20 in the hilly parts. However, again it was difficult for me to stay in my group in the downhill parts. So I needed to close the gaps uphill. But this was impossible after the long downhill section. I was close to the 16thjposition but then I got overtaken by more than 10 riders on the last 8 km and I still felt good … 🤷‍♂️… all on downhill sections… they seem to be on trainers that have a much better downhill gearing then I on my 52/11 roadbike gear… or maybe the kickr v6 is to slow… 🤣… well done all

This was my last race before Christmas and I wanted to go all in. Got in to the 2. pack upfront and we extended our lead to Rocketboy and Cervelokevin and that would just secure me into top 10. Unfortunately I had to see my pack sitting in a massive attack on the 2. last climb, I failed to hang on the last 100 meters before the descent – bye bye.

Well known my top 10 was in danger and I could see they were wheeling in on me, I decided to waited for the chase duo Rocketboy and CerveloKevin – I reckon could take them on the last climb. On the Climb I pushed so hard for the win and it looked good, 🚀boy slipped away but CerveloKevin had my wheel. All the sudden 🚀boy came from behind with a very big effort and it took the breath
out of me and I had to see them both finish before me – wrong tactic trying to climb these two strong guys🙈
Fun being back on track again and I guess I’ll be loading up for one hard race every week, at least that’s what I’ll intend to do no promise🤞😉
Merry Christmas to you all and a especially to You two guys Kyle and Neil♥️🤙🎄

  9. HalAir says:

I fully expected this to be a fast race, seeing the route profile with a general sloping descent, with two main climbs and a series of smaller hills, if I was after a HIIT-session, this would be it 😆

Yesterday I did a 90min Z1 & low Z2 ride, for volume, hoping it would act as a gentle intro for tonite’s planned effort. Entered the start-line 20min before start and started a gentle warm-up with a couple small/short surges to get the body “in position”.. My plan was go fairly hard out from the start to get as far up front as possible and utilize the long downhills as much as possible and punch on the hills and see how long I would last 🤣

54321 GO – 1000w direct off the line and the first minute averaged 430W but despite that I was “already” pushed back into 40th position or so… but the peleton was crowded and draft was available on the descents.
Due to the undulating route the group shuffled positions back and forth but we stayed more or less together, atleast to the halfway point where I simply fell off.. I think it may have been a lactate clearing issue, as my HR had not spiked (Only 55s total in HR Z6) but the legs after the halfway climb just “died” going over the crest.
I missed the train….SillySil,Chris and Garofalo had left 🤦‍♂️
Seeing my Strava HR-graph I was up untill this point more or less above my average for the route, that latter half I was more or less below…

Since the train had left me in the dust I had to shift focus to keep the riders following behind me. HeikeHardt, Slyfly and a couple others did close the gap but I managed to stay with them and punch a little better on the hills leading up to the finish line, ending in 45th place. HeikeHardt finished 1s behind me, it came close 🙌

I was hoping for a fast and dynamic race tonite, and I was provided for in spades – thanks for the race all and congrats to all who started and to the podium riders 🙌😁

Tomorrow will be a “adaptation day” so I can be relative fresh for more punishment on Thursday, see you all then!

I’m back after a getting Covid for the first time ( I wouldn’t recommend it). I took it steady throughout the race and had a few technical problems that paused the action for a few seconds, catapulting me down the field, especially inthe first part of the race. Enjoyed the course, with a good uphill / downhill mix. Must get better for Thursday…

  11. Kyle Goodram says:

Ah, the adventures of me and my Wahoo Kickr – my new best frenemy in the cycling world. So, my old smart trainer thought 6% gradients were a challenge? Well, hold my water bottle, because the Kickr laughs in the face of such inclines, maxing out at a whopping 16%. It’s like going from a leisurely stroll to a full-on Tour de What-Have-I-Gotten-Myself-Into.

In the race, I started in the prestigious 74th position – yes, 74th, in case you were wondering if I mistyped. My cycling strategy? Well, let’s just say I had a more intimate relationship with my gears than I’d ever imagined. Passed a few Muckers, got passed by a few Muckers – it’s like a high-speed game of tag, but with spandex.

Miraculously, I ended up in 55th place. Who would’ve thought? Thursdays? Oh, that’s my Zone 4 chill time – the one day a week where I convince myself that cycling is a leisure activity. See you on the relaxed side of the virtual road!

  12. Andy_UP says:

Looked like a route I might like. I thought I could maybe get over that first big hill with a fast group. I didn’t, had to drop back a group on several hills. I was first racing for 17th position, after that 20, 25, 30 en finished 31th. So I thought I underachieved since I got dropped by every group that cought me. So hit “end ride” and on screen comes up best 5 min and best 20min power last 3 months… Ended with an IF of 1.07 and got close to my best 20min power ever. This in combination with 111 starters and 100 finishers, I now feel better with my effort and result.

  13. Silvia SillySilNL says:

Great overview of the different stats Neil! Can I ask for a favor on behalf of the women joining the Mucker races? Could you do a women’s mention starting January? Maybe only top 3? Let’s see if that attracts more women?
For example this race I really gave it all, but in a strong field like this I won’t get closer then a top 40. Meanwhile HeikeHardt and I were really fighting hard to keep up with the guys and keeping an eye on each other, a race within a race. But we’ll never get mentioned in a race like this. Maybe the woman that won (Coci) will reveal herself to us if we get our own mentions 😉. Possible to give it a first try in Thursdays race? It will be my last this year, after that I’m on holiday until January 🤷‍♀️

  14. karel sousek says:

More than one hundred racers on the start, very nice. With running and team TTT under my belt before, it was easy to start strongly and stayed in front. Big group up to 20 riders formed, until first climbs came. Selection of riders followed, until we stayed only with Luca and HsvClaude.

We pushed hard and advantage over next group with Dutch brothers in arm was going up. We could focus on the final battle. I tried few small attacks, but guys were ready. More than that, they both released 10-12wkg surge at the foot of final climb and i quickly lost ground with 450w ~7wkg for 30-60 sec. Very good race, i liked it a lot, hope everyone else too. Thank you!
