set off with the race within a race goal in mind but i was struggling to see my heart rate zone on my small screen tonight and i ended up hitting zone 7 early on so i backed off slightly and just bought the bike home with a bit of a race for 50th in the end.
I half knew how this was going to go, the perfect profile for me, but I have my performance limits. I knew I could latch onto a fast group but I also knew it was a case of surviving rather than competing, but that’s OK, I measure progress in how long I go before I eventually ‘blow’. So I thank my group, Muckers teammates Svard, SwissChris69 & Grochang, plus hard workers KaneDalton333 & TomVanHoorebeke … but especially teammate Andy_UP who was continuously pulling me back into the group as I started to weaken. Despite all this help I lost a further 3 positions towards the end to a strong trio working well together. Legs felt good tonight, lungs still feel like they are recovering from illness, but almost back to full fitness.
Race stats: Age : 56, Weight : 95kg, IF=0.99
Averages : 159bpm, 294w, 3.08w/kg.
Started this race thinking I’d just do my own pace, and try to hold a steady 3.8 W/kg. That worked out pretty well, and I found myself in a group of seven for most of the way. Coming back through the tunnel, we overhauled the group of four just ahead of us, and now we were 11. In the group were lrollins, tomlerieger, the two Stefans, yayarecki, and some others that I hadn’t had a chance to ride with, they usually being too fast and too far ahead. Whoo! Looking pretty good. With 6 km to go, I eased onto the front for a short pull, and was 6th on the board. Cool. Then everyone went. I was at my limit and couldn’t respond to the attacks. Ended up riding with yayarecki, though we could see Stephan_Smit and tomlerieger about 60 m ahead, there was no closing with them. Two km to go, I did a little surge and got 30 m ahead of yayarecki, all set to cruise to the finish in 15th. Less than 1 km to go, yayarecki was suddenly on my wheel. Gah! So another surge and I got 30 m up again. From the results I see that the whole group of 11 splintered; looks like no one was interested in a group sprint. Fun race!
No HR Z7 – check, and what about making another challenge within the race, so I wouldn’t be too fatigued on Thursday Champion race. Goal being: getting a mention in top 20 by staying in Z4.
The only way to succeed was to find a group pushing 4.0 watts and then stay in the draft zone.
I hooked up with a perfect large group and among those my fellows Muckers, SwissChris69, Svard, Andy_UP and I think one more Mucker were following too. At the last 10K SwissChris69 and Svard did a little break through on the main group, and from that point on I gave up Z4 and I decided to lead my team fellows further away from the group. Ups changes of plans🙈 I went in Z5 and we ended up with a 100m gab to a new strong rider TomVanHoorebeke and one more??? Unfortunately Andy_UP had to let go, and the trio were made, SwissChris69, Svard and myself working great together, and we were all secured for a mention in top 20🎉🥳
Keep making those Tuesday races change in HR ZONES, it’s a game changer for me, and it also gives me new acquaintance of riders👍
Planned to take it easy and just do 2.5-2.7 w/kg, but the group following me was a bit unstable the first 10 km and ended in a nice group with Jeff and Neil. Then for some reason Jeff pulled away from the group and I thought fuck it and joined. We ended up with a gang of riders from Farnham Road Club more than half of the last part. Then Jeff did a sprint at the end and I catched up on him and overtook him at the very end just a meter ahead, and that ruined my no zone 7 for that race :-p
Intended a nice easy spin, flat route, 65mm rims, should be able to draft a large group, by the amount of rider’s registered. Plan soon went out of the window, when I started riding with teammate Torben, pushed harder than I liked, and ended up in a group, with Shrew, Blinky Bob, and Rkd 7, started to push hard 1 mile from the end, with Torben on my wheel, and overtaking me on the line. Great fun as always, and cheers for organising 👍
As expected, attacks from the start. I stayed with the top 4 for a while, almost diing I found out that drafting is not working. I tried to find the draft after each of the 4, but nothing happend, so I had to ease a bit, not being able to hold the pace. Then Nelson passed me, no drafting again.
Then the app kicked me of the race. I got back after a while and I saw a group of 10+ people I was able to catch and DRAFT!!! Nice pack, probably not much slower than the front, but without attacks, so I was really enjoying the cooperation in front of this group. We was fighting for 10th place, but then I saw a group of 4 like 280m in front of us, so put there some almost all out pulls to motivate others we can make it to them. It worked, nice work, and the in was about to 6th. Being not good at sprint, I desided to try some attacks, so after like 5km of saving energy I attacked 3 time from 5 km to the line. The third attack left me in front with bismo, we worked well to the line, so finally six for me, seven for him. Thanks to all the folks from the big group, it was maybe much more fun then staying in front and waiting for final execution 🙂
Had intended to join yesterday race but unregistered due to not being able to spend that time on the trainer… Sounds like you all had “fun” and will join on Tuesdays/Thursdays when able!
i wasn’t really feeling it today. I started the race and about 7 miles in still wasn’t feeling so I had a user error glitch and turned it off. I want to be fresh for Thursdays Championship race and the Big Ironman race on Sunday.
Wanted to help out fellow (ex?)-Mucker Steven today. So I started fast, So once the riders start to stretch out, I could ease of and look for him. I’m around position 25 and don’t see him in the nearby list. I see a lot of Mucker jerseys infront of me so I push a bit harder, just to get a glimps of the names. Don’t see him, he must be back. Just at the moment I want to stop putting the power in, I see him infront in my nearby list. Close call there. I see he had to let go of the group with a lot of Muckers, so I start pulling him closer. Here comes Mike Hagen passing by and starts pulling, nice teamwork. We close the gap. I settle in the back of the group and every time Steven is gaped, I jump in front to close it again. Apparently, this is very tiresome so when a big gap opened up with several riders, I couldn’t close it anymore. Still did my best to keep Steven in the draft with occasional recovering moments. This was a lot of fun!
Nice race, happy for 5th place in the race of the race and shame for 21st place but without mention.
Quick race, nice team work with batbuilder, TomVanHorebeke, Macko and Ali_Vds. In the end I caught up on S. Loudford and Andy… too bad we weren’t together before. See you tomorrow evening 💪

As usual, Mucker’s race delivered. Such a strong group of riders. My humble 16th position was good enough for all time 49th position on this route😱. Luca_ma… I’ve tried to stay on his wheel, for most of the race and I just managed to do that but in the end it was too much for my legs as with just less than 7km to go and another surge from him I couldn’t follow because of the cramps🫤. Top 20 seems like winning the race for me. Nevertheless, it was a great race and I see you guys and girls on Thursday. Great effort everyone 👏
Its raceday again! I was feeling good about this one. I completely avoided my routine and did what one should probably always do before a race. I only had one soda all morning and then switched to water and Gatorade. I actually hopped on and pre-rode 10 miles as a warm-up. In the warmup I saw Karel was doing the same thing so it made me feel even better. During the warmup something felt off though, it felt like I was stretching to reach the bars on the bike. So I did the unthinkable before a race and adjusted my seat. I moved it a quarter inch forward. I hopped back on for 2 miles before the race started and it felt incredible, I wasn’t stretching and I had less pain in my knees.
The race starts and I’m off. I find myself quickly in 35-40th pos. but I was with some pretty fast company like Macko and batbuilder. It was a nice group of guys and I was able to sit in and hold a wheel and conserve some energy. I managed to hang with them until around mile 4 and probably could’ve held longer but my mind was messing with me. I was worried that I was going out too fast and wouldn’t be able to maintain. Then that group started picking up the pace, not by much but enough to pull a small gap on me. I was left in no mans land. I either needed to bridge back or drop to the group behind me. After my last race results, I decided to drop back. The group behind me included riders like DolphWader, Mucker, blinkybob and Hoppytherocket. I am close enough in fitness to these guys that I figured I could fall in with them and have a good chance to finish strong and have a fun sprint at the finish. I backed off enough to drop back slowly, I only had a 600 foot gap and didn’t want a big group to go steaming past me. On my screen I can only see one rider behind me, Baggers69 was taking the lead coming up behind me. As he caught me, I let him take the lead so I could see who was behind him. To my surprise he was alone, I think at that time Dolph was the next rider back, 800 feet behind. I pulled back in front of Baggers to let him know I wasn’t out of energy and made a strong pull. I paused and he took the pull. I would press the issue on the inclines because I knew if the group behind was working well together, that is where they could start to catch us. I’d fall behind Baggers every once in a while for a breather, but really mostly to check the gap. Somehow we were maintaining that 800 foot gap. Seeing that would give me a boost and I’d jump back in front and make another strong pull. We did this until around mile 16. Thats when I saw remko dropping back in front of me. I made the leap to him and Baggers followed. There were 3 of us now, 3/4 mile from the guys in front and a 1/4 mile to the guys behind. The three of us kept swapping pulls until the 2 mile mark. At that point I wanted to go. I ramped up to 3.5-4w/kg and held it for the first mile. I ended up leaving the other two behind. What had me scared though was that I could only see the guy behind and I needed to pull enough of a gap that if the big group had a sprint I could see it in time to react. So I took a short breather and then unleashed everything I had. Apparently I was not under any pressure and pedaled into the 30th position. Everything felt really good on that ride and Rouvy rewarded me by jumping my FTP from 233 to 255.
