MUCKERS Vietnam Race 6 of 6. 06/07/23

Route 6 of the Vietnam challenge and the Last Race in my mini Vietnam Championship

6 Thursdays on the trot and we are finally here for the last race for this challenge and championship! If only Rouvy would release more challenges that last a few months , we’d be able to schedule these challenges to run on the same night for whatever consecutive weeks they need to, but Rouvy seem to love doing 25/30 day challenges that mean I have to spread them over both of my race days just so they get completed before the deadline! But this has been great event and Thank you all for taking Part.

We’ve loved the commitment shown by you all that we have designed a winners T-Shirt that we will send, free of any charges, to the winner of the championship once they send us there address and preferred size!! We’ve also produced a special edition “Top 10” finisher for this championship, so if you’ve ever had a top 10 finish in any of the 6 races, or you are top 10 in the final standings, then just pop over to the store and get yourself one! It’ll be available for a few months then we move on to our next championship…….

So, to tonight’s race: Only 9.6 miles long and 656ft of climbing means its either just doable for a max effort or, just NOT! 😉 Starts with a long flat section so the draft was the key along here and soon everyone was in packs, trying to reserve some energy for the climb that started just over 4 miles in and lasted what seemed forever! OK, 1.7 miles isn’t forever but it felt it and it pretty much decided the race!

Simon_Hahnenbruch” won again! Out of the 6 events in this championship, he finished just 3…. and won all 3!! Imagine of he’d have done all 6!! Following closely behind was the super strong “Tuden” who himself only managed 5 of the 6 and that 1 race no show definitely contributed to him not winning the the championship! Just a minute behind came the 2nd Dane in the top 3 “nielsbrynnum” who himself only managed 4 of the 6 races but imagine if this top 3 had done all 6 races….

Just a few seconds behind came top placed Muckers Worldwide racer “rmadden1” ( 2 of the 6 races completed ) with a really strong ride to 4th, then came “Andy_UP” ( 6 of the 6 races completed ) for 5th place who was flat out to get as many points as possible! was it enough to move up from 2nd place in the Championship? “MikeHagen” ( 6 of the 6 ) came next for 6th place and who was the championship leader before this race, so this position might have just kept him as the overall leader.

Strong American rider joined us for the 2nd time in the championship and finished in a nice 7th place, followed by 4 Muckers Worldwide riders competing for the last 3 top 10 places! It finished 8th for “kylofski”, 9th for “Svard” and last mention to “Ryanio-Bianchi”

Well done everyone! top race tonight with some quality efforts.

What a great little championship this has been! Mike came into this with a 20 point lead over Andy, who had a very comfortable lead over 3rd placed Tuden. 4th was KinKwan with a tight battle behind between Ryan and Mucker for 5th!

Well done Mike!!! you won by 18 points in the end and averaged 88.3 points over the 6 races! Please get in touch with either me or Kyle with your size and address and we will get the winners T-Shirt sent out! Andy, you should be really proud of 2nd place and the way you pushed Mike in every race! Tuden, gotta say what a shame you missed that one event!

Hope you all enjoyed this mini championship, 74 different riders took part in at least one race on this event so all of you guys listed below did better than 54 other riders1 Not bad!!

total focus on my closest rival Ryan for this race. if I finished just one place behind him, we would end up equal on total points which considering how strong he is, this was going to be a big ask, especially how he finished 4 places in front of me at the last race!!! Set off as fast as possible and was around 7th place and looking for a friend to jump on with and Basak came past and he’d already said he was going for a 300w session so if I could just get in his draft along the flat first section, and Ryan was behind, I might get over the hill and be in a good place!! The hill Killed ME!!!! Ryan came past and i just put as much in as possible to not get dropped too far, jumping on anyone’s wheel who came past me! Kyle was next and we rode together back up to Ryan and then I just concentrated on trying to keep the pressure on Ryan but also not allow purplebengel to catch and pass me! Just managed it, and also kept that important 1 place behind Ryan which meant we finished on the same points. Added bonus was KinKwan no show so we actually ended up joint 4th overall! well happy with that.

Another fun Muckers race!! I missed the last one, so was extra motivated for this one. Short sprint, you know what it means. Threshold riding time!! It did not disappoint. Worked with Neil right from the start, plan was to hit the hills hard, recover on downhills. Mike and Andy were only a little in front of us, I was switching between pacing myself on the flat start vs trying to catch them. In the end, did bad in both. Pushed little harder than I planned but not enough to catch them either. Once the hill start, they took off. After the hill I saw Svard was falling little behind. Stayed with him until the end, Kylofski came from behind and joined us, we went to final km together. The final little hill was the win it or lose it moment. Closed my eyes, ripped the handlebar as much as I could, went just a bit ahead of the two before the downhill, then my clyde weight took care of the rest. Finished 7th. IF 1.02. A lot of fun!! Thanks Neil for another great Muckers race!! Hope to do the upcoming Australian challenge races too.

nice report matey and thanks for the draft at the beginning which put me in a strong position that when i got overtaken on the climb, i didn’t get swamped! you finished really strongly! well done!

Got a good ish start, but couldn’t keep the wheel of the fast group incl Neil and I was dropping behind. I could see Neil setting off into the sunset approx 600ft ahead. I tried to close but no one was interested to share the load- So had to do all the hard work myself to try and claw my way back. As no one wanted to give me a lead I turned to plan F and just smashed the pedals. I closed on Neil and Basan but as soon as I caught Neil, basan didn’t want to wait around so was back cycling solo. So turned my thoughts to time trail mode. Good event and championship. Cheers Neil

joint 4th Mucker! and i did everything i could just to try and be the next over the line behind you. actually thought you were going to disappear again when you caught me on the climb but it wasn’t as bad as last week. thanks for the comments.

  4. Mike Hagen says:

That was a frustrating start for me.  I started hard because I figured there would be a fast group at the front and I wanted to be in it.  And there was, but they were just ahead of me, and try as I might, I could not close the gap and catch a draft.  Finally gave up after 4 km and they pulled away.  Noticed then that Andy_UP was sitting on my wheel.  That was okay.  Also saw that Mucker1974 and basak.oztan were locked in a battle about 100 m back.  Interesting!  Of the group ahead, Simon and Tuden were gone, but I thought nielsbrynnum, rmadden1, and/or svard might come back, and they did get dropped, but we only caught svard.  Meanwhile, Andy reminded me that he is a faster climber than I am; he got 100 m ahead on the Phuoc Tan hill and it was everything I had to reel him in again on the following downhill.  The last climb, with a few hundred meters to go, I hoped Andy would not attack because I had no intention of going for it.  But he surged, and fine, all his!  We were locked into 1st and 2nd on the Vietnam Adventure race series at that point, and nothing was going to change anyway.  Besides, the 2nd race of the day was coming up in just a few minutes.

    • Neil Rushby says:

well done Mike. Don’t forget to send us your size preference and your address for the winners T-Shirt!! thanks for taking part and thank you for the comments.

Yes, it was a bit of a shame that I couldn’t run the one race I missed, but it’s not always easy to fit it in when you have children. May I suggest a model that is used in many sports where you run series over a longer period. Let’s say there are 8-10 races, where only the 6 best races count. That way, you have the option of missing a race or if the trainer and the internet connection fail. Just an idea😉 But a cool little race this evening, which for my part was driven at full blast. Simon H obviously wanted me to the finish line, because he didn’t really give it full throttle until the sprint. Which of course I lost, but not by much though😆

    • Niels Brynnum says:

Support the idea of 8-10 races – 6 counts if possible. If not, perhaps it could be an idea to reduce the points score to the number of participants i.e. if 30 participate, the winning will get 30 points, second 29 points…..and the last finisher will receive 1 point. In that sense, it would not have that big impact to miss one of the race as you would only be 30 points behind the winner and not a 100 points.😀😀

    • Andy_UP says:

It’s an intresting proposition. Problem is the challenges don’t run that long and incluse 3 to 6 routes. Mucker races have always focused on the challenges. Still you could argue to drop the 1 or 2 worst results, but keeping score of (in this case) more then 70 riders has to be an easy and automated task. I guess now it sais participating is more important then winning. I think it’s ok to let the winners win the race, and the regular compete in the championship. Please Tuden, you have to give us something! 😉

  6. Niels Brynnum says:

Great race 😀, shortly after the start a front group gathered with Rmadden1, Tuden, Simon and myself. I knew especially with 💪Tuden and 💪Simon in the group, that the climb was going to be an enormous challenge and as predicted they dropped Rmadden1 and myself when we reached the climb. Rmadden1 and I continued together until the last part of the race, where Rmadden1 got a gap of 30+ meters but I think he reach his limits as I was able to close the gap and claim the last podium spot 🥉 Massive congratulations to the overall winner 🏆 Mike Hagen 🏆

  7. Andy_UP says:

Short last race of the championship but the hill looks a bit long for me to rocket_UP. Started fast and maybe I could follow the lead group but at what cost? I was on Mike’s wheel and he didn’t close the gap. I decides to save my strength for the hill and maybe I could follow Mike to the finish line this time? Let him do all the work, no it wasn’t pretty but the hill was comming up, and he proved to be the stronger one, he is first in the championship! The burden of wearing the leaders jersey. On the hill he was going strong but I managed to follow. I felt good so near the end, I push on and I actually gaped Mike. What was happening? I couldn’t maintain the power, as Mike is much beter at this so he came back. Again I chose his wheel. There is a short pretty steep hill before the last straight to the finish line. There it was going to be decided. I had 1 Rocket left and I hoped it would last from bottom to top. I fired everything I had when it started to go up. Up to 9W/kg. I saw Mike did not, or could not hold my wheel. The last flat to the finish I could let the power drop, as Mike didn’t try to close the gap anymore, leaving me confused. Did I beat him or did he just let me go and have it? Reading his race report, I still cant tell. Anyway, fift in the race between names I can only dream off having around me. Nice second place in championship!

    • Mike Hagen says:

Take some credit, Andy! I let you go at the end, but only because you’d worn me down too much earlier in the race. You had a rocket left, but I had none.

  8. Roy Madden says:

Went all out in this race new there would be a fast group form early there was there was 4 of us Simon Tuden neillsbrynnum and myself the pace was quick before we hit the climb but managable I knew it was going to hurt on the climb tried to get to the top with Simon and tuden but eventually had to drop back myself neillsbrynnum went over the top together I made 1 effort to get away got a gap but wasn’t enough and neillsbrynnum was the stronger at the finish well done to everyone and especially Mike hagen for winning the championship

  9. Kyle Goodram says:

With two races last night, my head is a little fuzzy remembering what went on in both races. This being the first one is even harder as they were both tough races. I was hoping to take this one easy and focus on the second race, which suited me better. I started off quite easy riding with “Rens_Piccavet” and we started passing a few riders. By the time I got to the main hill, I slowly dropped “Rens_Piccavet”. I had caught up to Mucker’s trio of “Mucker1974”, “Ryanio-Bianchi”, and “Svard”. I pushed hard to overtake these riders over the top of the hill and managed to keep them at bay, securing an 8th position. I’m quite happy with the result. Cheers, Muckers!

  10. Nagy Róbert says:

Now, I tried another trick: moved the whole trainer-stuff to the terrace to get a bit more oxygen. Good idea at the first flash, but it turned out during the start of the race, that the wifi router is a bit far away, so there was big lags in the video, so I couldn’t see anyone around me in the first few minutes. I dont know how the draft is working in this situation. But anyway I guess there was no real strength in my legs now.

But to sum up: this Vietnam race-series was a real good motivation for me to make hard training, as I’ll need it quite badly next week. I’ll be in the Dolomites for a week, with some good climber guys. Let’s see.
I hope to join the muckers races later!
