MUCKERS WORLDWIDE “PIECE OF PISS” MINI CHAMPIONSHIP 28/01/24

ROUVY Release a challenge called “Piece of Piss”!! 3 routes that all add up to just over 30 miles and 2600ft of climbing. Each on their own, yes, a piece of piss, but 1 after another, with “hopefully” a five minute break between them??? Well lets see if that title still rings true!

A 3 race mini championship, is just that, 3 races one after another. So lets see who managed to complete all 3 and who gets todays special mentions for having a proper go at this! Usual Points system, NEDs and bumps, and I have to go off ROUVYs official final standings like I do in all my race reports.

FINAL STANDINGS:

“Gil.Mad.io” pulls off A clean sweep of all 3 races get him the Piece of Piss Mini Championship winners title! “BareRemi” kept him as honest as he could, as did the usual strong performances from “lrollin” in 3rd and “HalAir” getting the Muckers an amazing 4th place! Top British rider “boogybill70” gets 5th, Just 1 point in front of Australian rider “VicL” in 6th. “Southafro” gets the number of the beat points for the Muckers, then team mate “grochang” comes next in 8th, who was clearly getting strong race by race! “skripnit” gets a solid 9th then its left to The creators of Muckers Worldwide to come next with “Mucker1974” getting 10th by going all out in the first one, then just outsprinting “Kylofski” in the 2nd, to having absolutely nothing left in the 3rd and just hanging on for dear life, watching as kyle was just pulling away. But those first 2 results, and a number of NEDs between us in the last race meant I just finished in front, but its fitting we are holding everyone else up…..

I was all set to do the top 20 but only 11 of us, who ride by the Muckers rules, finished all 3. I do feel for those who did all 3 and are NEDs but as soon as I let the rules slide for 1, I’ll not be able to put those worms back in the can, so NEDs are NEDs for now. Plus I also feel for “lloydie_HF” who according to his Strava, did finish all 3, but, its showing him as a DNF in the first one. I can see this has happened but I have to go off the ROUVY final standings for points allocations. (But I’ve mentioned you above so hopefully that’s ok)

Thanks all for jumping on this. hope you enjoyed it and if not, we at least got the challenge completed in a few hours!

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

enjoyed that. I feel i rode quite well in the first 2 and was nice to be in the top 20 over the line for both rides (heart rate zone 7 for the 1st, zone 6 for the 2nd with a great sprint finish with Kyle over the line) , but I just had to try and keep the power high ( for me anyway) on the last one to see if it had been enough to beat Kyle over the 3 races as the legs didn’t want to play on the final race.

I’m never in the mentions unless its a strange one like this or its a “quickie” where its a late arranged race or something, so I’ll take the 10th place, order my T-Shirt (gotta decide what language and color combo to go for though) as it might be a while before i can order another!

Thanks to all the riders who had a go at this.

  2. skripnit (Roman S) says:

Hi Neil, I only learned after your report that it was a “MINI CHAMPIONSHIP” 😉
But next time you have to announce it. I made an effort in the first race for fun and the other two were seen more as a moderate race together 😉
Nevertheless, as always, it was a lot of fun. Thanks for the preparation and evaluation.
    Greetings to all…
    Roman

    • Neil Rushby says:

but if i tell everyone….. I wont get a mention! 😁😁. Joking aside, we did promote it on facebook and on discord, was meant to advertise it on the strava group but it slipped our mind. But if we ever do this type of thing again and its listed as race 1 of 3 etc etc, its going to be a mini championship.

thanks for commenting and your continued support.

Sundays workout had me focused on working in hr zone 2 & 3 and I was quite proud succeeding holding those zones to the finish of race one. Got the pleasure to ride with Mucker1974 and Noccon during the first ride👍
During the second ride I felt I had good legs and it was difficult to stay at hr 2&3, so decided to change plans stepping up to hr 3&4.
Third ride I was all pumped up and did MatthiasHeil explosion from gun start, and had me standing at nr. 1 for 20 seconds🚴🏼‍♂️💨😉 I then felt back to position 10-12 with boogybill70, Southafro and VicL and halfway thought I had AndyUp 300 meters in front. Legs felt good and hr zone 5 felt also pleasant, so I bridged the gap to Andy and he did a very nice job keeping my rear wheel to the finish line al by him – well done Andy👏
So a nice change training plan going from on 2 to 5 for 3 races and still having the felling for not overdoing things.
A special thanks to Remi who entertained me through all 3 race on discord. Funny how we started up speaking our own language and ended up speaking English. Too hard for me to understand Norwegian🙈 see you all Muckers and not Muckers

wow, can you get your head around your zone 2 and 3 first race was still faster than my zone 6 and 7! you are just a machine!!! Glad you enjoyed it, we don’t do these things very often but the 3 routes just seemed to be perfect for a mini championship and too short to do as mid week race nights.

hope we hear from Bare Remi as he has the highest average hr out of you all! to hear he was talking as well is very suprising! 😮😮😮

    • Andy_UP says:

Thanks for letting me sit on your wheel. Although it sometimes looked as you tried to shake me, I’m sure it was just a feeling 😉 I could barely hang on but I had to because 200m behind where 2 riders who would gladly steal my top10 place.

  4. BareRemi says:

This was way harder than i expected. With one of my friends i was doing zone 1 trip of the 2 first stages yesterday, and after that i concluded that this event wouldnt be a fast flat event with a bunch sprint. The first climb on stage 1 was demanding and i was struggeling to keep the fast pace of irollin and gil.mad. At the final to climbs gil.mad was going way harder than i wanted to do at the end of stages 1. so i decided to save my legs for stage 2-3. i got a small gap to irollin wich was good for me in the event GC. For stage 2 a new guy showes up, who lookd strong in the beginning. The 4 of us did eventually manage to work together until the steep climb started 5km from the finish line. I felt good at that point and decided to do around 360w witch droped irollin and the new guy. Gil.mad decided to follow me and he manage to get infront just before the line.
I guess the last part of S2 became to hard for me, witch i paid for in the stage 3. A few new fres guys did show up and gil.mad went away with them from the first climb. Fortunatly irollin was in the same situation as me and i just decided to go as fast as i could in front to try to get the best overall time in the peace of piss challange. Irollin tried a few times to drop me but in the end we sprinted for 5-6 place. Overall happy with secound place and congratz to Gil and irollin. Fun concept and challenging to pick a watt for the 15 -20 min break between each race. Ty Niel 🙂

  5. Southafro says:

I had an absolute blast, love the concept of a few stages too. I didn’t have a strategy like some, I just went for it from the start, to finish as best I could🥵😂 and to survive the last stage. My start on the first stage showed some good legs today. No holding back then. I had some great battles in each stage with different racers but boogybill70 gets kudos cause he gave me the best fight to the line in the last stage. Thank you gentleman for a brilliant session and challenge. Gonna be sore legged tomorrow 😂

  6. HalAir says:

Wasnt sure how today would turn out, woke up and got up, feeling not highly motivated and undecided wether I would go for a longer single ride or do the two first of today´s race mini-series… Yesterday I PB´d up Rouvy´s Alpe d´Huez route, averaging 324W over 58min so legs had already had a flogging this weekend 💥

However – 15min before start of first race I procrastinated no more, suited up and got on the turbo, joining the start line-up. Started with a hard surge giving me a little time in the front group, until the pace settled and the top4 blasted away… I rode in the 2nd small group and the final small hills broke us up a little, but I managed to stay ahead up the last hill and with a sprint I barely managed to secure 6th postion. My HR was high and I was really feeling it, as one push oneself more when facing other riders vs solo riding.
Okay, 1st race done, rolling gently while waiting for the GO on race 2, followed a similar approach and punched hard from the line and settle into a good group, which for me again was the 2nd group as the first group is just too strong 🤣 Managed to remain in the group and ended up in a sprint finish battle against BoggyBill, which I secured with a 4m margin IIRC – CLOSE! Good going Bill 👍

With Race 2/3 done and dusted, I decided to go the full nine yards, and lined up for 3rd and final race – by now I was feeling it and performance did drop compared to the first two. Nocccon was catching up with me fast during the last 2km and another sprint finish came into life, another close call!

Over the past couple of months I have primarely focused on volume for my training, going for the 3 mini races lasting <30min each gave me a pretty decent HIIT-Sunday + the course undulations also aided greatly in that regard. Even needed a nap after the races on the couch, something I rarely do (or feel the need to)

Avg power for the three races @ 89kg came in at 303W, provided me with a surprising 4th place – cool!
Thanks for organizing this "mini-Event" and thanks for the group efforts, the attacks, the challenges – you rock 🤘

  7. Gil.Mad says:

I really like these short consecutive races a lot more than one big effort of a 1+ hour climb, allowing for a short recovery, a trip to the restroom and so on. Interval training without feeling being one.
    Keep it up, thanks.

    • lrollin says:

@Gil.Mad You should go for a short run during recovery moments to channel all your power and give a little hope to the other participants 😜. Joking aside, you’re truly a machine 🤖 Impressive to see you respond to Procat’s attack in the third race after already putting out so many watts in the first two.

  8. Kyle Goodram says:

Sunday’s “Piece of Piss” Challenge – what a name! In the UK, this is almost like swearing. Anyway, I decided I was taking these races easily and treating them like social rides rather than a race.

Race 1 – 10 miles and 900ft with 40 mins to complete it. This wasn’t going to be a piece of piss, but compared to race nights, it was going to be easier. I did the whole ride in Zone 4. My cadence and HR monitor weren’t working, but I managed to fix this during the ride (switched to Bluetooth from Ant+). Other than that, I completed it with a 5-minute warm-up to the next race.

Race 2 – 10.5 miles and 1000ft of climbing again with 45 mins to complete it. I wanted to chill on this, and I knew if I stuck to my game plan, I could. I spent the entire ride with Mucker1974 AKA Neil. This was my best ride as it reminded me of how much I loved cycling. It brought back memories of rides I had done with Neil over the 35 years we have been cycling together, whether on a road bike or MTB. At the last little hill, we both went for it, putting in 8 W/KG. Silva was watching the race and said it was a photo finish to be proud of.

Race 3 – 10 miles and 650ft of climbing. On this ride, I went a little harder and found myself in a group with fellow Mucker Mick_Michel and PeterBaars63. Every time I pushed, Mick_Michel was right behind me. Right at the end, we both sprinted for the line. I put in at 9 W/KG, and Mick_Michel put in a 10 W/KG. He beat me by 0.1 of a second – the second photo finish of the day. I need to get better at these.

Thanks, Neil, for these mini-championship races.

  9. lrollin says:

Short races are really a nice format. Less physically and psychologically demanding than races lasting an hour or more. This 3×20-25 minute format is more suitable for indoor trainer races than 3-hour efforts or endless climbs.
The previous Sundays, I wasn’t very motivated for long climbs. Today’s program seemed more fun to me. I canceled my outdoor ride to stay at home and sweat on the indoor trainer. Too bad this little championship didn’t attract many people.
Wouldn’t it be nice to reserve some long routes for a groupride format, where the top riders could pull everyone along with the magnet effect? By the way, are any of you motivated to ride in a groupride on non-Muckers race days?

    • Halair says:

I ride most days, but route and time vary a lot depending on my schedule/family. However Saturday mornings is usually the most consistent oppertunity to join in on a group ride for me. Higher volume and low-medium effort is usually what I aim for when I do these Saturday rides solo.

    • Mads Grosen says:

I would love to join those group rides, when times in my narrow training schedule allow it. I’m Swimming and running every Saturday morning – just pick time and see what happens🤙

      • lrollin says:

Except for Tuesday and Thursday at 8 PM Paris time and Sunday morning at 9:30, And for me, on Saturday and Sunday mornings, I will resume outdoor rides. I suggest Wednesday between 6 PM and 8 PM, Friday between 6 PM and 8 PM, and Sunday between 5 PM and 7 PM (CET) . So, a group ride of 40 to 60 km at around 2.7-3w/kg.

  10. Victor Lendzionowski (VicL) says:

Thanks Neil for organising this. Really enjoyed it – fast, tough and a lot of fun. Have to agree with many of the other comments regarding the format. The long climbs are fine once in a while but this kind of back to back racing is a nice variation. Thanks once again.
