Muckers Flanders Tour 2024
When we first connected our ‘inside’ training bikes to the computer we hoped for a world of imagination and improved fitness without traveling beyond our ‘pain cave’.
No, then came ROUVY, then came the Muckers, then came friendship.
It is April 2024 and we have just completed the 2nd Muckers Flandrien Cycling Trip. Avatars from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands and the UK became real faces, real names, riding on the very real Cobbles of Flanders.
Andy, and Sarah, were our hosts again, planning over a number of weeks, our preferred area to stay, our preferred climbs and routes, our preferred alcohol and do we want Mayo or Ketchup on our Belgian Frites. Once again, superb organisation which was really appreciated by everyone, thank you Andy, we all arrived safely, rode safely and all returned home safely, you can relax satisfied on a job well done.
Added bonus this year was a very willing and enthusiastic support car driven by Silvia, who was even more encouraging and enthusiastic. Last year we did not take enough photos, this year, we each have a wonderful record of memories and ‘pain face’ pictures on Cobbles. Food and water was available every thirty minutes, a good excuse for a five minute rest and more conversation. Again, we thank Silvia for being the ‘directeur sportif’ and incredible support all weekend.
We stressed about the weather, in the UK we always stress about weather! Dodgy forecasts did not become reality and we were able to enjoy the iconic climbs with only ‘slightly damp’ Cobbles. The wind on day two was another matter, but you haven’t experienced Flanders if you haven’t had a 30mph headwind kissing your face.
The riding? Saturday 60miles, Sunday 40miles. A social group ride outside is something to be enjoyed. We chatted, we shared the wind, we raced to finish lines, we stopped to regroup and supported each other throughout. No mechanical disasters and the rubber stayed on ground. Gear Ratios and Tyre Width were subjects of great discussion and, occasionally, minor regret. The author of this article will probably return with a bigger plate at the back and tractor tyres next year.
The people? The essential ingredient. We arrive with three things in common; ROUVY, Muckers, Friendship. Every person present has commented how we connected like friends known for a lifetime. Each new face to the group adding another positive into the mix.
So here goes, so much pressure not to forget someone … To friendship: Andy, Sarah, Rens, Ard, Linda, Mick, Silvia, Torben, Steve … Muckers founders Neil & Kyle (this is all your fault) … and special one day guest appearances by Ludwig and ROUVY embassadors Lauren and Noel. Salute and Kudos to you all.
Along the way there were personal triumphs, personal bests, dropped chains, dropped bottles, some headaches, battered bodies and very sore wrists … but … it is what it is … We really don’t care.
Back to being Avatars now.

A social group ride?? Not even close. Coming from flat Denmark I was not close to prepared for two days of torture :-p
Saturday was a nightmare for me with a lot of climbs on cobbels but Sunday was much better. I would do it again next year if I didn’t have to drive 9 hours each way. That was the only downside for me. But I love meeting up with some virtual friends and after a weekend being able to call them all real friends. Thanks Muckers for a great weekend I’ll never forget 🙂
Great summary Steve 😃! I really wanted to be a part of this and meet this group of Muckers, since it was only a 2.5 hour drive for me. Since I haven’t ridden a racebike outside in 30 years and don’t even own a helmet or bike clothing for the Belgian weather, I didn’t think it would be wise to start riding again on the cobbles of Flanders. So to feel part of it I wanted to make myself useful. I raced 160 km of the narrow streets of Flanders in my car trying to reach everyone of the 21 locations Andy gave me, before the group did. I made over 200 photos and films (brought back to a great 125 memories). It was intens and I loved it. The scenery, the people, the friendship, the laughs. And laughs we had many 🤣🤣🤣. So happy to be part of this community! See you all online, next year in Flanders, or in a few weeks in the Netherlands 😘
Thanks!
Some quotes…
Neil: “I like the banana, is there more banana?”
Kyle: “You’re a star!”
Torben: “I don’t care!”
Andy: “This is not a hill…”
Ard: “I had no idea I loved the cobbles so much.”
Ludwig: “I’m going back down (the slippery koppenberg) and do it again”
Silvia: “Somebody want a blanket?”
Linda: “Ard liked it so much last year, he said I had to come with him this year”
Mick: “I think mine is too big for you Kyle” (Talking about his bike… I think…)
Steven: “I’m the guide now, turn left here”
Lauren: ” I can’t say if that is comming to Rouvy….”
Rens: “Ard is too strong”
Neil: “I’m trying to get Ard drunk. I’m doing this for you all!”
Silvia: “I want to see how you are going to eat this”
Kyle: “”
Andy: “START!”
Website doesn’t like the “taghooks” so some thinks went wrong.
Lauren: “(after a long silence) I can’t say if that is comming to Rouvy….”
Kyle : “(unrecognizable speech)”
Before this year’s Flanders trip, I was worried that it couldn’t match last year’s feel. I was wrong. What an amazing weekend we had, even the weather was on our side. My standout moments were Neil trying to get Ard drunk on his Banana Shots but getting himself very drunk in the process, Stes’ absolute delight at completing the Koppenberg on the first try, and Torben’s famous words, “I don’t care.” But the best thing about the weekend was the new real friends we made. Thank you to everyone who was there. Muckers Worldwide really does mean “Friends Worldwide.”
Even though every individual made a considerable investment to be present for this weekend, I love how much everyone enjoyed it and created memories never to forget. As a fan of the professional ‘Spring Classics’ it was amazing to ride the iconic hills and sections again, it was like a football fan playing at Wembley. Such a friendly community we are part of.
2 days of traveling, went to a bar with no money and got drinks paid for us by a lovely Belgium Man, smart looking airbnb, no sleep, straight to Andys for drinks and meet up, absolutely loving meeting up with muckers from last year and new muckers for this year, lovely stew and chips and mayo (don’t ask but it does work) nice Belgium larger, even nicer banana flavoured shots….. then it goes very hazy, memories like a fading hand print on a wet hand rail at a supermarket….but now its Saturday morning and time for the first ride…. everyone’s surprised to see me after “last night” but the ride was fine. although I opted for short sleeve top and base layer which was fine at first but all our stops were at the top of hills so you’d get there all warm but then set off after the stop, usually into a long and fast downhill where cold and wet clothes and cold wind really are a recipe for a bad case of the chills later! put the wind breaker on about 3/4 the way round but it was too late. rookie error! excellent meal out later on but that’s when the fever hit and i was done! missed the Sunday ride and have been ill for the last 4 days! Worth it? of course it was! honestly can’t wait for the next one but i think I’ve worked out a better approach and finally I now hope for less cobbles (unless they are on a climb, which is fine)
thank you to everyone who made it was it was.
