New Tech this Week: Garmin’s Latest Edge Cycle Computers

Garmin has recently announced its new Edge 840 and 540 Solar bike computers, which recharge with sunlight when riding. These new computers represent an evolutionary update to the Edge 830 and 530, both among the best bike computers we have tested. Like the king-size Edge 1040 Solar, the new computers move to a USB-C charge port, ditching the micro-USB standard, and offer multi-band satellite tracking.

The 840-series uses a touchscreen and buttons, whereas the 540-series relies solely on buttons. Garmin has also rolled out ClimbPro 2.0, enabling riders to see the profile of an upcoming climb without navigation

Both Edge Solar computers use a PowerGlass screen and have up to 32 hours battery life when using GPS. These quoted battery times assume continuous 75,000-lux conditions during daytime rides.

The solar capability is enabled by photovoltaic charging integrated into the computer’s screen. Garmin claims a run time of up to 60 hours for the Solar editions of the Edge 540 and 840 in battery saver mode.

Both computers continue to use a 2.6in color display and offer color mapping, with screen dimensions of 2.3×3.4×0.8in.

You can get these new Garmin Edge cycle computers from Leisure Lakes Cycles.

Kyle is a digital writer for MuckersWorldwide.com I've been out riding all over Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire for the last 12 years. It is mainly to keep fit as I love food and would be 16st if I didn't ride my bike at least 3 times a week. This leads me to Muckers Worldwide, as when the weather is un-rideable (fair weather cyclist) I move indoors to cycle on Rouvy. We have a large group of races that we race throughout winter in the UK. Hope you come and join us on a Tuesday & Thursday title of the races are "Muckers". Thanks, Kyle
