MUCKERS 2025 JUNE CHAMPIONSHIP RACE 4.

ROUTE AND RACE DETAILS:

Tour de Suisse 2024 | Stage 4 – Brig | 26.91 miles | 2,867 ft. climbing

The last race of the month and its a biggie! Absolutely blown away with how many of you guys are turning up for these races! Summer time is usually when the likes of myself and the other A5/A6/A7/A8/A9 category riders start to get some good months together but its still very hard to get top 50, let alone in the top half.

So what to do at this route. nice 2/3 section of green with kickers, then a sharp hill for the last 3rd that takes in around 1600ft of climbing on its own. Is it a 4 spoke route? can’t be a lightweight ooberman route can it? maybe a compromise and its a hadron 800 or 500 route, or enves?

The topic in the chat was that sometimes even though the route analyzer says the 4 spokes are the faster wheels, it really doesn’t take into account riding styles. for example, today i got into a nice pack at the start. i started hard and had averaged about 280 watts after 5 mins. once i found my pack and we drafted for the next 55 mins to the base of the climb, my average watts had dropped to 203 watts but it was the right group to be in to save energy. Those up the road doing 3.0s were all gradually getting spat out and scooped up by us as we worked really well together keeping the momentum going. I then did the climb at around 250 watts and got my average up to 223 watts for the whole ride. So the question in the chat today was if i know I’m gonna try and find a group to draft with at the start, do i really need to then struggle up the climb with the heavy 4 spokes?? Everyone’s opinion was 4 spokes but the only riders free to chat were the top riders who could smash up the climbs on a penny farthing and still leave me for dead so i had to go with my gut. I went 800s and i think it was the best for me. But it wasn’t easy leaving the 4 spokes in the shed 😆

So to the last race results of the month. Lets see if anyone’s still riding in the last 2 races now it’s 21:30. Yep, no riders on any of the 2 courses so lets shut this down!

73 riders set a time on this one!! So after our 3 rules are implemented we have 62 riders getting points tonight. Well done riders! and those that have been disqualified its because of 1,2 or 3 of these reasons:

  1. You averaged over 5.0w/kg over the whole of the race. 5.0 w/kg is too strong and more than likely a dodgy trainer rather than cheating. But we have to have to draw the line somewhere and 5.0 is more than enough.
  2. You didn’t supply heart rate data. Best way for us to dive into your effort if something comes up. its £25 for a cheap one on amazon and they work fine. Also they are a great training tool metric but it’s mainly a great way for us to be able to deep dive into your effort if we need to. No HR data, and we can’t really gauge your effort at all.
  3. You are a male riders who’s weight on ROUVY is set below 60kgs! Just put your weight to 60 kgs and you are in!

TO FINISH OFF:

222 riders took part in at least 1 of the 4 races, with 166 of them complying with our 3 rules and regs to be included. So although we are now seeing a decrease in numbers as more and more riders venture back outside, this is still a tough top 50 to get into which is great news.

Well done to VeloBuch for just doing enough to stay in front of Bareremi in the championship. But you now both get even more Ballast (as does the rest of the top 10). Grochang rounds out the podium with a very nice and consistent month!

Special mention to Yumile for being the newest member of the Ballast club! Just in front of another 5 ballast wannabes so lets see if we get anymore joining the club next month!

Both the World Championship and Category Top 5 championship blogs will be updated over the next few days.

Thanks again for the continued support and please remember to embrace this and just enjoy the challenge. Life is too short and time is flying by! One day it will be our last ride so enjoy every time you swing that leg over that saddle and clip in!

had a really good race. great pack along the flatter part, then was able to climb the whole of the climb section near 3.0. Glad to win my category and also finish 20th overall. Good month!

  2. Karel Soušek says:

With other evening plans this was only opportunity window to join Muckers champs, except midnight slot. With Matthias, Mark, Nigel and RegParaMa8 we formed good enough group to roll over first half with flat and descent profile. Moderate pace as we waited each for other. We lost Matthias then and shortly before climb also Nigel.

Main climb was very tough, i was sweating with 27C inside, but luckily i produced consistent effort, despite im not used to race early in the morning, i was before covid era, which is five years now. Mark was all the time ~100m behind which was great, as it forced me keep on pushing. Thank you all who joined us!

its nice to read that the extra time slots are appreciated. When i am sat creating the rounds of the championships, i do wonder if i am wasting my time.

I can’t race early either (some say i can’t race at any time lol) so well done for a great result considering this!

So it wasn’t just me who spent the whole day thinking about what set of wheels to choose 🤣 I lined up for a warm-up with 500’s but then changed my mind and took light Obermayers.
I had a good time riding with LinV, we worked in a larger group for a while but the guys got away from us.
Light wheels were a good choice for climbing, because my legs were still tired from Tuesday’s climb on 4-spokes.

    • Neil Rushby says:

wow the obers! i considered those but i just felt there was too much “flat” to climb ratio for those. But i get so demoralized on long climbs on the 4 spokes. The Hadron 800s were the wheel of choice before the 4 spokes came along and on the route analyzer they were only about 1 min slower on this route so, as i explained above, i went with them. But my mind was not-made up 100% till i jumped on the bike!

I also had to calculate the “Sunniva fear factor” which is when you appear on my nearby list and we are just starting the climbing! lol

I had to miss one race in June, so I didn’t really think I would ride it (because of AC/DC in the evening), and I rode the route a week ago to complete the challenge. Even though I knew I couldn’t ride it any other time than 5:30 am, I remembered Sharky, who rode it like that, and I knew that even if I was slower than the group, June would be better than February, when my HR monitor didn’t connect to my first race. The first horror was the wake-up call at 4:59, and then the start of the race. There were 2 of us at the start, but I was riding alone from the first meters. I tried to ride as much as I could the entire way up the hill. Then I set a pace that would get me to the finish line. With the same performance, I lost 6 minutes to these with VPs. Still, I should be 12 places higher in June than in February. The question is: was it worth it? For Mucker, definitely.
So thanks for the more slots, but I hope I won’t use them for a while

    • Neil Rushby says:

what a great read and also great to see how you were thinking tactically about your best 10 result from 11 and how you knew riding it would give you a score that would “theoretically” give you a better 10 scores. only those of us who plan/hope to get into the worlds top 50 every month need to consider this. Just had a look at your 5 scores and they are: 15, 21, 28, 35, 27. so yes, at the moment you are keeping February’s 15 points as your lowest and in the “spare” bag. well done and well thought!

    • Manuel Lamber SHARK says:

I’m happy to give you a little mental power to choose a terrible start time 🤣💪.
      Well done mate 👍

  5. Steven Ludford says:

90 minutes race for me would be 2.8 average at best. Decided on a constant 2.8 pace strategy but my best drafting opportunities were disappearing up the road at 3.0 so I rejigged my plan and chased back on.

I knew this would bite back on the climb so sat in the group for a carpet ride knowing they would drop me and I could concentrate on maintaining the gap to anyone behind. Overall, happy with both strategy and performance.

My Rouvy Bike and Wheel combination gave away 5 minutes to the optimal equipment on the Route Analyser but I find it’s an accurate match to my real bike speed so I’ll keep plugging away.

    • Neil Rushby says:

appreciate the thoughts Mucker. great work with you along the bottom. It was funny seeing that one rider constantly trying to break away, pulling 10s, none of us react (apart from a thumbs up which to me is when the thumbs up takes on a whole new sarcastic role lol) and then we just scoop him up again once the train starts to gain momentum. He did eventually quit as well didn’t he. shame that, should have just saved energy with us and smashed the climb.

The more you race, the more you learn/realize there’s no point trying to pull away from a fast(ish) group of 5-8 riders on certain profiles! especially a solo effort with no one close enough to catch to then help you stay ahead?

i also like your realistic approach to wheel and bike set up. will i replicate? hell no!! but i respect it.

      • Steven Ludford says:

Yes, always interesting when the group stays disciplined against the one rider trying to pull away. It can really disrupt a cohesive group when it’s a strong rider coming through the field and someone gets tempted to join. In this case, he definitely wore himself down with the repeated efforts.

  6. Yumile says:

I appreciate being mentioned. It’s the best reward for sweat poured in the garage.

    • Neil Rushby says:

Hey Yumile!!! thanks for the comment! All we can say is the “Ballast Club” is the most exclusive club on ROUVY!! 😏😏 And anyone joining it deserves a mention!!! The question now is: Can you get anymore?? good luck and thanks again!

  7. Manuel Lamber SHARK says:

For this month I must to decide to skip the last race, because Friday I must to go in Cortina for my Ultra Trail 50k and don’t want to risk nothing for me legs.
I’m always a warrior, that RaTim said often in the past for no lose any race I did in a horrible slot time 🤣. This month I ride very well in A6 and also skipping the last I’m 🥉 in car. and just ready for the next battle.
