MUCKERS 2025 OCTOBER CHAMPIONSHIP RACE 1.

ROUTE AND RACE DETAILS:

IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship Marbella 25 km | 15.16 miles | 1,978 ft. climbing.

Here’s how ROUVY describe the route: Start by leaving the coast behind with a long, steady climb from Marbella to Ojén and beyond. Winding roads, sea views and rugged hills define this demanding opening stretch of the Ironman route. A true test of early pacing and climbing legs.

Here’s how i describe it: Very nice route….

Here’s how i describe racing on it: WTF! who put that climb in the middle of a nice route?????

Also, when did October sneak up on us? Straight away you can feel the competition has increased. Some familiar names are back, but have they made sure they have everything calibrated and in order? While they’ve been away, ROUVY have been hard at work with the fairness checks and maybe some of these guys might get stung with an automatic DSQ from ROUVY. If you have, please take it in the manner its intended which is that something is “off” with your set up. Get it checked out and jump back on. Lets keep this all as fair as possible so we can all enjoy it.

Additionally, for you newbies please remember our simple 3 Muckers rules to be included here. HR data is the most important as that’s just done at the push of one button on NITEOR so i never look who it is, i just hit the button. The next 2 i have to check the rest of the finishers individually and they are: No average power of 5.0w/kg or above for the whole race, and no Male riders under 60kg. I am in no way telling you 58kg riders to smash the pizzas and chips before the races, just set your weight to 60kgs on ROUVY and leave it there.

So, to tonight’s race. lets see if the last race has finished then we can check NITEOR and see how many joined us for this tough race route: oh no! i’ve set this championship up with the wrong points structure! what a muppet! luckily Davide at NITEOR was just a whatsapp away to sort out my mistake! He’s so helpful and also quite patient with me as i do mess up stuff on there alot and he’s always there to save my backside!!!

Delay over and we have 110 riders set a time. after the 3 rules applied: 88 riders! That’s a very nice result for such a hard route.

I’ve reverted back to setting categories based on the whole of the first race of the month average power. The last few i have experimented with the 20min ftp calculation from the first race of the month version but i much prefer this one so this will be the one we use next year for Bonus points

lets go!

TO FINISH OFF:

20 current ballast carriers turned up for this race, leaving 12 others to still turn up at some point. The first race always impacts those with the most really hard with BareRemi dropping from 3rd to 14th in the GC and karel dropping from 4th to 11th. So right now we have 6 riders in the GC top 10 who aren’t carrying any ballast but that will all change by the end of the 4th race… or will it??

Thanks eveyone for racing with us. please pop a comment in the comments section and let us know how the race went from your perspective? it’s always great to read them and find out you were also on the edge of of going over that cliff, no matter how chilled your avatar looked!

thanks for reading, and as per usual a special thank you yo all that read these thoughts of mine to the end.

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

felt good tonight before the start, and even in 70th place out of 80 in the main race i still felt good, even though a little shocked that my 2.8w/kg so far was only good enough for such a low place! I blamed it on how we at the Muckers races just attract a hell of a lot of strong riders!!! or is everyone just getting better and I’ve stood still…. no! blame it on the lightweight wheels I’ve selected for when the climb comes! yes, that’ll do!

The climb finally came and i was able to settle into a nice 3.0 and managed that all the way to the top with a very nice group of riders as well. We crested the top and we slingshoted (not sure that’s a word) our way down the other side, catching a few solo riders as we motored along. Last little climb, and i am still feeling good and got to the top in about 3rd place in our pack of 7 so it was now time to get ready for the sprint. this is where it went wrong, i was perfectly placed just behind everyone and as i made my decision to go, i got stutter… stutter… glitch back 30/40ft and about 500ft from the line!!! Absolutely gutted! It makes it more gutting when you are ready for it, rather than just hanging on for dear life and don’t have the legs! But never mind, it is what it is and it could have been worse i suppose. Still really happy with my performance even if it was well outside the top 50. I am also in A7 this month, after a few months in A8 which is a nice change. Hopefully i can do all 4 races this month and get into that top 50, which will now be really hard as the big guns start coming back week after week.

Also this time an hard route for the Championship, in the last month I’m fell good and work hard to improve always a bit.
Start good and ride well until the first hills, I try to have a good pace but I must sweat more to hold some wheels 😅.
Many of mate near me for work sometimes together, Duckman2, rouvy1bryon, MNHROUVY nice to ride with you.
At the end I overtake some riders and find a nice result with a 47th position.
This month I change my cat. and now must know my news opponents in A6.
Thanks to everyone who ride with me 👋🦈

I dont know quite where to tuck this in, so apologies in advance. What are the chances of sporting the Muckers kit, BUT with no gloves? TIA

  2. Yumile says:

Winding roads, sea views, and rugged hills? I only remember the rear wheel of the guy in front of me.

  3. Chuck Phillips says:

Another great race Neil. You talk about setting into a pace on the climb. I never get there I fight the climb all the way. It’s a good day if I still have fight at the end and I did so….

  4. Paul Bernstein says:

well I seem to have worked my way into the A3 category. I expect that I will be pummeled and punished later this month. Carpe diem and all that. I only joined the muckers mid summer, so it has taken me a bit of time to figure out how to best participate in these virtual races. TMI, but last winter I was struggling with some cardiac issues, but then sometime in March my body seemed to miraculously heal itself. Proceeding a bit cautiously, I increased my efforts, and then was found by the muckers. thank you. More recently, as the IRL cyclocross season appeared, I revisited the training wisdom that suggests that improvement comes not form the work done, but from the recovery from the work done. So for a few weeks I have been trying to abide by that. (one brief deviation occurred this past Monday, a recovery day, when I logged on and discovered Musker 1974 was riding. I teleported in, un warmed up , and discovered that he was about to commence a rather long and steepish climb. So I spent the next 13minutes and 52 seconds breaking training but enjoying a virtual chat on the way. Finally we went our separate ways, but the day was all the better for it. I will look forward to staying in touch with all my mucker friends the next few months while I play outdoors. My cx race last Sunday was maybe the best I have done to date, flowing the single track through the woods, riding the sand pits, and oh yes, having lots of fun..Cheers

What Yumile said: I don’t remember sea views either! I was trying to keep my HR below 150; well, below the upper 150s; well, then I saw MatthiasHeil. Sigh. Just really trying to keep some wheels in sight in front of me. But undoubtedly Muckers races attract the strong riders, and undoubtedly everyone is getting stronger. I put down my best 2 – 3 minute W of the last three months off the start, and *still* watched the top group of 30 drift away. Rode with the second group for a bit, and watched them drift away too. But nice riding with rouvy1bryon for the bottom part of the climb. We caught chorus and simonjp. Then we caught stfmgr_65 and MatthiasHeil. Derooy was in there too. We lost Bryon and Carlos before the top, and then I got dropped on the kicker with 2 km to go. But a fun race on a tough course; kudos to all that finished.

Just one kiss and we will be flying high. New month, new quarter, new Muckers excitement. Powerful enough to keep up in front group. High pace, Alieno (dsq) in breakaway. Lead group formed over small kickr before main climb.

Very long one, but draftable. I tried to save every precious watt, because i was expecting attacks over horizons. There were two and both very painful. Baremi and Premek in lead, Tijs and me closing gap. Ductail also dsq, so we sprinted for silver, bronze and potato behind Wytze. Thank you all who joined us!
