MUCKERS RETURN TO Mt. VENTOUX EVENT. 04/02/24

ROUVY Route Used: Mt. Ventoux circle ll | 65.43 miles | 9530 ft. Climbing

67 Registered | 39 Starters | 23 Finishers | 16 DNF | 28 DNS.

Kicking off February with a nice 100km ride as I did go easy on you in January! I still get blown away by how many turn up for these brutal rides as it was not so long ago we’d be amazed we had 10 register and 4 or 5 finish, pretty much guaranteeing a top 5 finish! I Think those days are well and truly gone and its just great to see it to be honest. As this was a longer ride than normal, I thought we could do another deep dive into the top 20 of the guys who still stick to our “friendship and heart rate data” rules as to be included in the mentions, Looks like 19 in total did this so all 19 of you consider yourself “mentioned” in todays report!

This is all just for comparison purposes. I’m using the same stats page on ROUVY in each persons training diary (as you can change them between distance or time) so this is why some of the stats will look a little different to the ones in the final standings.

Some Very interesting figures above!! You can really see how a riders weight made a massive difference on this route can’t you! 🤨 Also worth noting is average power can sometimes be a little misleading, especially if someone was really concentrating on that and not allowing the bike to roll on the hills and keeping the power on, where others will use it as an opportunity to have a rest and roll creating very different average powers. The Kickr seems to be the trainer of choice as well.

See everyone again on Tuesday, i think most on here will be using that as a recovery ride after this!

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

Man that was tough! Was doing quite ok up to about 3 hours in, still keeping just above 2.0w/kg, still 2 or 3 riders behind me but then everyone started to quit and i was left in last with a massive gap in front! Surprising how you loose that extra motivation when not being chased anymore! So i had to just keep going and gradually pick of the guys quitting up front. One rider, quit with about a mile and a half to go???? that’s such as shame, but that last section was the worse!! Glad i finished it though and im still in that class of rider that hasn’t let a route beat him yet!!

I brilliant course management from BareRemi and some strong guys in my group, had me taking to the foot of Mt Ventoux in a very good split time:
    02:36:39.930
At the last split time the group were set free to conquer MtV. on their own. I didn’t wanted to push harder, so I continue to pedal 260-270watts. Tuden,m-forby, BareRemi and Nielsbrynnum took off and gain very quickly a 300m gap.
Legs felt still good and I began to increase the pace. I had to embrace some happy thoughts to keep up the faster pace and slowly I began to bridge the gap to Nielsbrynnum. On the plateau to the last 5km’s climb I had passed and gain a gap to Nielsbrynnum for about 350 meters. The last 3km the devil of Nielsbrynnum had me work hard to hold the gap which I exhausted did crossing the finish line🥵

Southafro….Brutal, and toughest ride I’ve done on Rouvy. I lost count how many times I came to a standstill, swore myself blind and continued to eventually finish. WiFi issues plagued the ride. South Africa and its “load shedding”. For a while I had the pleasure of being inspired by the powerful metronomic efforts of Nocccon, thank you. The fear of being a quitter was all I had left in my legs taking me over the tippy top. I hope I wasn’t the only one feeling like I had died seventeen deaths. Well done gentlemen.

Having participated on the previous Ventoux Circle event (132km) I had an idea what was coming, preparations started day before with loading up with good carbs and whole foods. Drink for the ride was pre-mixed, kept it simple with 65g fructose (sugar) and 35g glucose (Maltodextrin) per liter of water (+2g of mineral salts)
I knew I was carrying some fatigue in from the week as I completed the Babble Challenge on Saturday, so tucked in early to ensure I maximized my sleep.. 😅

Sunday morning, got up just before 8AM and made myself a proper batch of oats, with cinnamon, sugar and some butter and chilled on Youtube for a little while. The rest of the house was sleeping. Cycling kit newly washed, 3 bananas, an apple and a large mug of coffee prepared and it was time to saddle up 😂

With an ETA of 4hrs20min given my power/weight and bike choice, there is really no need to go all-out too soon…. “All out” fill find you on a ride like this regardless so just aimed to find a pace than felt “comfortable” and let things roll along as they may. Eating pace, half a banana every 30min and drink atleast every 5minutes was my plan (about 90g carbs/hr)

The first 40km or so I cruised along, on the first main climb I passed several riders. Towards the top I caught up with Minyana_Gure which ended up with holdind held my tail wheel like a blood hound for the rest of the ride 😅😅 On the flats I could “easily” stay ahead and also transitioning into the climbs, on the descents I would roll past him even at “zero” power, so it was apparent there was a major weight difference between us 😂 W/kg we kept even between us, and everytime I attempted an attack he would respond in kind and we kept trading 7th and 8th position throughout the ride. Early on the second main climb he did switch into an extra gear and I decided to let him go, and kept my pace. Real quick he was 1 good minute ahead and I thought he was gone for the day. The next couple of km distance between us remained constant, but suddenly there was a power decrease upfront, and the spare minute was spent and we were back together again. Yet again he locked in on my rear wheel and we continued up in tandem for several km’s 🚲🚲

With about 4km remaining I was “starting” to feel it, when out of the saddle and pushing a little extra my left quad would start to cramp up, both calfs not far behind either so I needed to really control my efforts. In the saddle, keeping cadence up fared better. At the same time Minyana’s power took a hit, and suddenly I started to gain ground. Not fast, but steady, had he given up or having techincal issues? So the very last few km’s I rode solo and finishing for a unchallenged 7th place, the last 150m on top was a bliss, being able to let power drop and just roll the final few…..phew… Made it 😵 Took a couple of easy minutes before unmounting, slowly, getting kit off and wind down.

105km and 2900m of elevation conquered in 4h 02min, with an average power output of 270W @88kg while keeping HR below threshold, I am happy with that ☺ Almost 4000kcal burned, approx 2000kcal consumed and I failed to complete all my drink, so netted 65g of carbs/hr for the ride.

All positions from 2nd place to 7th, all Nordic athletes – that was cool! Alan Huette unchallenged on top, a serious biking machine he is – congrats 🎁

To all who started, congratulations are due to you aswell! Even if it was only for a partial ride for those who didnt have the time for the whole ride!
The biggest round of applause I give to those who needed 5-6hrs to complete this ride, that is a true testiment to dedication and the ability to push oneself further. Respect!

    Best Regards, Haldor (HalAir)

A really tuff challenges for a Sunday morning 🙂. Our Captain BareRemi had prepared a detailed raceplan for our Scandinavian group (Tuden, m-forby, BareRemi, Grochang and myself). The raceplan worked out perfectly and we arrived at the foot of Mt Ventoux in fairly good shape 😉 Grochang got dropped on the first section and shortly after I got dropped 😰 from the group as well. I was fighting to keep Grochang behind me 😓 but he pushed really hard 💪 and I could see how the gap just got smaller and smaller. My legs felt empty (perhaps mentally as well as I couldn’t hold the gap) Grochang passed me (like hello and goodbye) I simply couldn’t follow his pace. Instead I focused upon finding my own rhythm, – still having 5 km to conquer of massive climbing. My legs started to feel a little bit better, so at the 3 km mark I decided to chase Grochang, but despite several attempts from my side to close the gap towards the top, Grochang responded really strong 💪👏 💪👏 and I was not able to catch him.

Every time after such torture I tell myself, I’ll never, never, never do it again🥵…then, after a while, when it’s time again…when I’m at the start again and the race begins, I have my resolution forgotten again and it starts all over again…🚵‍♂️🚴🏽‍♂️
    Luckily I’m so forgetful😉
My thanks and respect to everyone who took part and made the race possible, thank you for sharing the suffering with me 🙏🏻I think we did a great job🏆Greets Slyfly🙋‍♂️

I finnished with feeling, that I’m Dead and my legs have gone 🥵😃. Thanks to Slyfly, most of route we rode together. Last 5 km tried to catch Southafro, and not to be catch by Piotricz. We didn’t change positions, but I would definitely be slower without them. So many thanks to you.
