A Legend’s Last Race, Cyclocross Chaos & New Routes to Explore
Hello Muckers! Welcome back to your weekly roundup of everything important, interesting, and just a bit gritty from the world of cycling. The seasons are officially changing, bringing an end to the road racing calendar and kicking off the muddy mayhem of cyclocross. Let’s dive in.
A Fond Farewell: Peter Sagan’s Final Road Race
This past week, the cycling world tipped its hat to a true legend. Peter Sagan, one of the most charismatic and exciting riders of his generation, completed his final professional road race at the Tour de Vendée. While he may not have finished on the podium, the three-time World Champion’s departure from the road scene marks the end of an era. He brought a unique flair and incredible talent to the sport that inspired millions. While he’s not hanging up the wheels for good—he’s heading back to his mountain biking roots to aim for the Paris Olympics—the road peloton will certainly miss his presence. Thanks for the memories, Peter!
The Mud-Fest Begins: Cyclocross Kicks Off in Earnest
For those of us who love a bit of mud, the cyclocross season has well and truly arrived! The Waterloo UCI Cyclocross World Cup in the US kicked off the elite season with a bang, delivering thrilling racing and reminding us all how brutally beautiful this discipline is. Closer to home, the UK’s own National Trophy Series is underway, with the first round in Derby showcasing some of the best British talent. It’s the perfect time to get out and support a local race or even pin on a number yourself. The conditions are only going to get muckier from here!
New Ground to Cover: King Alfred’s Way Gets an Upgrade
In fantastic news for our adventurous Muckers, Cycling UK has just unveiled an official “shortcut” for the popular King Alfred’s Way long-distance trail. This new 55km route option in Wiltshire provides a less challenging alternative to a particularly tough section, making the iconic loop more accessible to a wider range of riders. It’s a brilliant development that opens up one of the UK’s best bikepacking routes to more people. If you’ve been hesitant to tackle the full route, this might be the perfect excuse to start planning your trip.
Gear News: Lights, Action, and Autumn Kit
With the evenings drawing in, now is the time to check your light setup. There have been some great reviews of new high-powered front and rear lights designed to keep you seen on the roads and trails. On the apparel front, most major brands have now dropped their full autumn/winter collections. We’re seeing a big focus on versatility – jackets and gilets with removable layers and enhanced breathability for those unpredictable damp-but-mild British days. – Find them all here.
That’s all for this week. Whether you’re saying farewell to a hero, getting stuck into the mud, or planning your next adventure, have a great week on the bike.
