MUCKERS DOWN UNDER CHAMPIONSHIP. ROUND 1

01/08/23 | Lake Ohau | New Zealand | 23.15 MILES | 1066.27 FT. CLIMBING

74 REGISTERED | 51 FINISHERS | 5 DNF | 18 DNS

I now believe in the power of advertising!!! Ever since this Down Under challenge was released, I knew I wanted to do this as an 8 round championship and hopefully on the same day of the week like we did with the Vietnam challenge that we also turned into a very successful Muckers Championship with 6 rounds raced on the same day of the week with points awarded as we went along. But, I wanted this to be bigger so we have been spreading the word about this as much as possible on Facebook, WhatsApp, Strava etc etc and we ended up with 74 riders registering for this first round! 74!! on a summer work night!!

This is a record for a Muckers race so if you are reading this, please accept a massive thank you from us and I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. But remember, this was just the first race of an 8 race series.

If you are new here, welcome! We just do this report to give a special mention to the top 10 ( or top 20 if we have over 50 riders on the start line ) and give everyone a chance to comment on how the race went from there perspective. Just our way of making those Avatars you’ve just raced against, more human and so you know, you weren’t the only one out there in the your little corner of the world, riding your smart trainer/bike in that spare room./garage/wherever, and trying your hardest!

So, to the race. who loves a 5 mile hill climb to start with??………. Not many! But for those who were looking to do well, this was where you couldn’t get dropped. luckily it wasn’t too steep so you could get the assistance of a draft, but it really seemed to take a lifetime to get to any form of downhill ( meaning rest 😉) The top guys were going for under an hour here, so that meant trying to keep an average speed over 23.2mph which meant digging in deep after the long climb to get the average back up. How Many managed this??

Regular Muckers race’s top 4 coming up! “adampel” smashed this race with a time just over 52 minutes, with “karel_sousek” just 3 seconds behind in 2nd. Then a 2 way battle for third just over a minute later which was won by “Simon_Hahnenbruch”, closely followed over the line in 4th by “nelsonsnyder” who only had a slight gap to “stephane-martin” in 5th.

Bit of a gap then a 2 way sprint for 6th! “hj2010” just beating top placed Muckers Worldwide Rider “berty-Bassett6” by 0.2 of a second into 7th. He was closely followed by another Mucker, “Tom-MWW” in 8th, who finally had a glitch free ride for a change!! Well done guys!

Sprint for 9th now between 2 British riders (Making that 4 Brits in the top 10) ending with “robbiedoo” claiming 9th just 0.1 of a second in front of “JJRobinson” in 10th.

We had more than 50 riders on the start line, so here’s the rest of the top 20! ” Muckers Worldwide team riders first with “Andy_UP” getting a great 11th place and “Svard” just behind in 12th. 13th came the German rider “c.v.” who just outsprinted “yayarecki” who claims 14th, who himself gets the place before “transberg” who actually finished in the exact same time but has been classified 15th. Newest Muckers Worldwide team rider “Loki1972” makes his team debut with a strong ride to 16th, with regular French rider “lrollin” in 17th

18th is claimed by another Muckers Worldwide rider “Chak”, then Danish rider “kjohannessen” in 19th, then the final mention to our very own Muckers Worldwide racer and fellow website creator “kylofski” ! Well done!

The top 23 riders all finished this in under 60 minutes so to get in this top 20 took some power and speed!

51 of us finished this race! 51! well done to all and it’d be great to hear how the race went for yourselves in the comments. Also remember, we all beat the 5 that didn’t finish as well!!

I will publish the Championship leaderboard in the blog for the 2LATE4ME race tomorrow. I am including their race times as well so that one needs to finish so I know what points to award those guys. it wont be a race report like this one, just a listing of finishing times and points, then a full league table. Otherwise this blog is going to be too long! But you can see below what points you’ve been awarded for this race.

Cheers everyone and see you at the next on which is next week and a double race night! 1st race points like this one, 2nd race ( I’ve called the 2nd one a sprint race ) has lower points and depends on how many are on the line. Basically just look at it like the first race is the main race and the 2nd, a bonus race. Links Below:

27th for me and a great race! was in a really nice group after the climbing and felt ok although my HR was saying different. We were catching Stephanie up slowly, but then disaster as the group fractured and i was left in the “slower” of the packs. Slower really is the wrong word but we cracked on and then at the last section of hills, Ryanio gapped us but i was trying so hard to stick to a 60 minute race time, i just put my head down and stayed above 3.0 for as long as i could and eventually reeled ryanio in. recovered on his wheel for a little then realized I needed to up the pace again if I wanted to hit my target, but as I did this, the power wasn’t as strong as before and I could feel the speed going just too low! big effort to the finish and I just finished outside my target time by 55 seconds!! but I beat my previous time over this route by about 2 minutes and I was 80% in zone 7 HR! I really couldn’t do any more than this!

  2. Kyle Goodram says:

As we started the first of the 8 Down Under races, I was feeling a little tired after swimming 1 km in the gym yesterday. I pushed as hard as I could and got into a group that included “wurstrolle_81”, “Chak”, “kjohannessen”, “runeholtzmann”, and myself. We rode for nearly 20 miles together, constantly working together. “runeholtzmann” and then “wurstrolle_81” started to drop off this crazy pace. With half a mile left, I fell off the back of this group and coasted home in 20th. Very pleased, and what an amazing turnout of 51 finishers on this midweek Muckers Race.

  3. Steven Ludford says:

Despite spinning up to 4w/kg at the start I never saw any of the top 19 finishers on my nearby list at any point tonight. I seemed to be bouncing from 30th to 40th positions in the first mile including 3 glitches that threw me 100ft back from the groups I was in. From the point of chasing back on 3 times I was riding in groups that included the riders that eventually finished 20th to 31st. I’ve been disappointed with my contributions in the group formations in recent races, I do try to do my bit but find I either can’t get to the front or find I’m bringing the speed down when I do hit the front. I chose the right group of riders today but I only had 95% in me and it was a struggle. Rode the final 5 miles with teammate kin_kwan, he later told me I helped him get to the end, I thought I was struggling to stay with him, if only we could see each others faces during the ride. 50+ riders tonight, amazing.

    • Neil Rushby says:

I’m seriously considering we try discord at some point! but what a frantic race. if we get this number again, i really do recommend map mode for the first few miles so there’s less chance of the glitch ruining your race. Thanks for commenting mucker and lets push on!

      • Andy_UP says:

I don’t know about the discord. Hearing some guys moan and panting like watching a bad gay adult movie… But we can’t know unless we try it right? I’m all for it 😀

    • kin kwan says:

Nice to ride alone for the last 5 miles and thanks for drafting the downhills.
yes, we should totally have a team radio. LoL

  4. Lamber Manuel says:

Mounted on the saddle 3 minutes before the start, I’m all fired up to have a good race. Ready to go and thinking I’m in the top 15, I check and read 39th…OMG how many are we tonight 💪. Shooting for 14 km until I find myself in a nice group of 4/5 (Mick, Kin, Ludford, Ryanio and Neil) I try to breathe hoping that another friend would start shooting to recover (jakimati, Dolphwader and SthepanieBriggs) but nobody wanted act like a hare. In the end I try and after a hard run-up I catch Jakimati first and on the last climb I catch and pass SthepanieBriggs… but only for a few seconds. Hunting again but with less energy, I manage to catch Dolphwader with maybe 1 km to go, but unfortunately Sthepanie was uncatchable. Great satisfaction to be 74 registered, congratulations to the organizers … for me today a good 24th place. See you next time 💪

    • Neil Rushby says:

that kick you did to go on the hunt was just too much for me! well done on a superb race and thank you so much for commenting!

    • kin kwan says:

Fast start as usual, something was off today and didn’t have the legs. Yet, it was great to ride alone with many teammates for the first half. still pretty good time at the finish line. will better prepare for the next race.

  5. JJRobinson says:

Really glad I was able to join this tonight. Great inspiration to push me on – I managed to mix it with the best for 3.5 miles but knew that wouldn’t last!

Was great after I dropped back and me and 3 others made best use of slip-stream for a good portion of the race. I seemed to go better up the climbs in the second half and a gap appeared, probably a bit too early to go it alone but it gave me an incentive! Couldn’t quite keep ahead for 9th and robbiedoo made a perfectly timed sprint effort to pip me – well deserved though!

Hopefully I will be able to join a few more of these, thanks for organising 🙂

    • Neil Rushby says:

That was a superb effort tonight! Even though there’s no wind on ROUVY, you don’t half somehow feel it when you try a solo effort don’t you! Glad to hear the race format inspired you to push on, if you are lucky enough to get in a race where it feels as real as it did for you tonight, its done its job! Hope to see you again pal as you have a nice collection of points there for a decent championship final position.

  6. lee marshall says:

I’ve nearly found the pattern ! go hard as I can for a minute , watch the big boys streak ahead and sit In a group desperately trying not to get dropped ! think there was 5 of us in the mini group tonight that slowly whittled down to 3 , hj2010 and tommww , you say tommw had a glitch free ride but his avatar wasn’t so lucky and a few times he dropped off the back just to be 300yds further up the road a few seconds later , doing 3wkg drafting then any sign of a hill it showed 9-10 wig . soon decided it would be suicide to try and follow him so tried to stick with hj2010 and I think we worked well . I tried to do a fair share of the pulling but in my mind he done more and as we neared the finish line I thought we were going to cross together in a new found friendship but I was pipped . I had decided I wasn’t going to try a sprint – 2 reasons , 1- I haven’t got a sprint , and 2- he had ! . fair result and happy with position especially because I think tommww should have easily soared infront till avatar started bouncing about

    • Tom-mww says:

After previous races where my power decided to flip flop from 1-7kg with any rise and always felt I was reasonably strong on the flats but felt I would drop like I’m going backwards on any climb I was out of the saddle smashing every amber section for this race, not to drop anyone more to not get dropped! But I need to maybe not go as hard next time to stay with everyone.
I was hoping for the three of us to stick together but when you both came through towards the end I just under estimated it and never got in the draft.
      Good effort 👍🏻

  7. Torben Adolph says:

As a newbee to races and mainly a MTB rider I went for this series of races. And for once I’s almost rested. I still sucks at drafting but after 1/5 of the race I finally catch up on a good group where you Neil was in. You guys lost me a couple of times and boy did I’ve to work very hard to catch up to the group again. Well into the race a couple of breakout was made and the last one I manage to follow and we got away from the group. We catch near the end to a very strong women but then I’s not focused and they got a small gab – downhill and being on my MTB gearing – I’d no chance to catch up – damn. But I manage to get a 25th place in just over 1 hour.
I loved the route and racing/training with you guys on Rouvy has made me so much stronger. See you all on the next 7 races 🙂

  8. Chris says:

I would say this race was…marvelous. At start of the race, I pulled about 6 watts, but found myself passed to somewhere in the 20ies. I found out in seconds that this flat course won’t suit me. I continued pulling high watts and tried to catch-up to a group where I could stay during the race to recover a bit again. These high watts were sucking my energy out of my body. I continued that exhausting strategy for a few minutes and saw team mate “Mucker1974” in front of me, who I managed to pass and then caught-up to mate “kylofski”, who became so strong during the year that he is normally out of reach for me. “Steven Ludford” sometimes passed me and then again vanished into nowhere, but soon appeared again behind me. I noticed that he experienced some glitches with the system. He disappeard like a ghost.

My immediate plan for the rest of the race (after 9 min) was trying to keep up to “kylofski” and stay behind his slipstream to save energy. But then I experienced myself a glitch…my Rouvy App crashed, I had to restart the app and the race. Oh man! When I re-entered the race, I found myself on P42. Since that procedure took a while, I regained a bit of life in my legs and pulled like hell to catch-up. “M_Kali” and “derrydingle” came in reach – I think they were 600m in front of me, but I could decrease the distance after exhausting minutes of racing. After I passed them, my plan was to close up to “Christjan”, “rogerstrainer” and “srichards” who was on the top in my nearby list. I wanted to use their slipstream and decreased the distance from 500m to 90 m at best, but couldn’t get closer, so I gave up and was happy with my P37.
What a remarkable evening with lots of glitches. I wrote an email to support, maybe they can fix that.
    See you next time 🙂

    Chris (alias “uffzynda”)

    • Kyle Goodram says:

Unlucky for you to have glitched because I ended up in a group of 5 for 17 miles. It would have been nice for you to join us. Hopefully, the glitches are temporary, and you will be back fighting for a strong position over the next few weeks. Great comeback though.

    • Steven Ludford says:

You need some better luck with system crashes and mechanicals for sure. The early glitches when you are already 150% are horrible as I needed another 10% to get back each time. A stable group with You and Kyle would have been good. Maybe I should also reach out to Rouvy Support to increase awareness.

      • Chris says:

yes you are so right. When I am already at150 % of my output capacity, I cannot compensate these glitches anymore. I tried to catch up but without slipstream I powered out myself very soon. It is annoying. But it is still a game only 😉

  9. Karel Soušek says:

Tuesday evening means one thing. This time we digged to the other side of globe. I finished running session in the morning to be fresh as i was expecting big names. Usual suspects indeed on the startline, so i borrowed Dutch tactics and observed what the others will do. They did, every few minutes attacks, but group stayed together, with Costa catching us solo. I symphatized with Simon on poor frame. Finally massive attack by Adam and only me was able to follow. Finish is coming, i tried one push, but no way, Adam took well deserved win as he was the most active rider today. Great race, enjoyed it so much, thank you everyone!

  10. Andy_UP says:

Did secretly sceam and made plans with Denny44 before the race, and a few minutes before the race, he told us he couldn’t make it. Why didn’t I make a plan B? So started as hard as I could, hoping to get in a fast group when the downhill and flatter section came. Ended up in a group with Robbiedoo, JJRobinson and Tranberg. All (too) strong guys I know I probably can’t follow till the end. Couldn’t do many pulls, trying my best to stay in the draft. Tranberg suddenly let go and dropped his power. Wow! I had to let go near the end but ended up with riding spot on my best 20min power output ever and very close to my 60min record. Very happy with that! Also thanks for mentioning 20 (I was 11th 😉 )

  11. Michael Michelius says:

56 at the start. Wow! That’s amazing! Thanks to Neil and Kyle!

As usual I tried to get a good start and after a while I found a good group with Neil, Steven Ludford, kin_kwan, Ryanio-Bianchi… The group was working quite well, but then it split up and I found myself in the last position and out of the slipstream. I tried to get someone’s rear wheel again, but it didn’t work. From that moment on I was alone. Every attempt to get closer to the group failed and the only mission now was to look back and keep the distance to the guys behind me. It worked. But if the course had been a little longer, SR-71 would have caught me. It seems that he really wanted my 31st place. With my last ounce of strength I managed to keep him behind me.

Mentioning and highlighting: What a surprising and strong ride from team mate Neil aka mucker1974. Usually I can hold his rear wheel, but today he had wings. All my respect! You are my man of the race tonight 🙂

    Cheers, Michael (aka Mick Michel)

    • Steven Ludford says:

It was a shame. You dropped off the bunch about the same time Neil flew off the front. At that point it felt we could catch Neil but he was definitely on wings tonight, we should have eased off to get you back.

      • Michael Michelius says:

No problem. It’s a race, everyone has to look after themselves first. You did everything right… next race, next try! 🤩💪

    • John Chady says:

I tried my hardest to catch you at the end. I was reeling you in but reality set in that there wasn’t enough distance left. Even if I would’ve caught you, I was spent, I don’t think I would’ve pulled past you. Nice strong finish to you!!

    • Neil Rushby says:

thanks Mucker! i really did feel like i was ok and not struggling to keep pace like I normally am! Also these championship races are slightly different to our usual ones as in we are racing each other on this one! Anything can happen at the next one so i will take this for now!

  12. Arndt says:

Shortly after the start I was in the top 3 for a few seconds. I enjoyed this time because I knew that I would soon drop a lot of places. After I got my breath back i was able to ride with a great group of 5 riders in the top 20. My goal was to reach the group in front of us so that, with a lot of luck, I might finish in the top 10. I think we all lacked the strength for that. In the sprint at the end I couldn’t gain much and had to let my strong competitors pass and was 16th. It was a great race. I love these races on Rouvy and it gave me twice as much motivation to start for the Muckers Worldwide Team for the first time. I have been with Rouvy for a very long time and I am observing developments closely. I’ve also tried using zwift, but I just can’t get used to it. The community here at Rouvy is just great and i think it’s nice that there are also many 50+ riders at the start.
Thanks to Neil’s dedication this community can continue to grow and network. This is the soul of Rouvy and I’m very grateful to Neil for the time he puts into it!

  13. Ard says:

Herewith a short update “Battle for Positions 12 to 17” from “Svard”. With my outdoor racing season on summer break, I now join the Muckers for some indoor racing also in Summer. The weather has been cooperating since my sweat cave lacks proper temperature control on hot days. The current cold and rainy weather in the Netherlands makes indoor riding the perfect choice.
Before the race, I analyzed the profile and knew a good warm-up would be crucial, given the elevation at the start. When the bunch took off, I initially pushed hard, to be at the front of the pack for at least a few seconds. However, I’ve adjusted my strategy over the past few months. Instead of trying to follow the strongest wheel all the way, I decided to conserve my energy until I found a group that suited me well, where I could contribute and play the strategical game.
During the race, I found myself riding alongside muckers “Chak,” “Loki1972,” “yavarecki,” “kjohannessen,” “Irollin,” and “cv.” Sadly, “Chak” dropped out early, which surprised me, as he’s usually on a similar level as me. Although I considered trying to ride him back to our group, I knew it would be challenging once I left the draft. In our group, we worked together efficiently, with “Loki1972” taking the lead most of the time. The rest of us also took turns, ensuring we stayed out of reach of the group behind us and potentially catching up with the group ahead.
At some point, we lost “kjohannessen,” who joined the group behind us. I noticed “Chak” had been taking strong shifts in the front, so his departure was a bit puzzling. Perhaps he hadn’t warmed up adequately, as he sometimes races during his lunch break. Not long after, “tranberg” joined our group, having been dropped by the one ahead of us.
I had anticipated the group would splinter into smaller groups and solo riders, as is often the case, but apparently if the field of riders is large enough groups are better balanced. “cv” and I managed a brief mini breakaway, but the others caught up again soon after. Towards the end, it became clear that the group behind us wouldn’t catch up, while “Andy_UP” led the race ahead of us, having lost his group and riding solo.
In preparation for a sprint finish, I held back a bit, keeping an eye on “Andy_UP” in front. From a Mucker team perspective, it made no sense to try to nab him. I would be done for the sprint and the others would come over us both. With 250 meters to go, I unleashed my full power, creating a gap between myself and the others. I was able to maintain a higher power level and ultimately finished 12th, ahead of “cv.” We came close to “Andy_UP,” who finished 16 seconds ahead of us, which amounted to over a minute at maximum halfway the race.
It was an exhilarating race, and I’m proud to be part of the Muckers team. Looking forward to more exciting challenges ahead!

I was indeed solo for the last 6km. I had a decent gap and was constantly doing the math to keep ahaid of you guys. I would have lost a lot of positions. I wasn’t totally empty, as I’m often am, but I didn’t had much left either. Anyway, I thank you for not doing everything to catch me, though I know you mainly did it for your own chances. I was counting on that nobody would want to close the gap while the others profit. Great race!

It’s been a while since I joined in a muckers race, really enjoyed it.
had a good start putting down 600w , think I was in 5th for a second then kept going lower as stronger riders passed me ending up in 30th place for a while then even going further back to 38th luckily by then I had a group of riders which I could stay with and enjoying the draft and taking it in turns to lead the pack. we were soon overtaken by Flohaner and srichards I thought I would try and keep up with them but they were both too strong 4w/kg so eased back to join Christjan and zenda which worked well as we started to catch up to srichards and 3 became 4 . Then another uphill section came and we lost zenda. Christjan, srichards and myself rode as a group till about 1km from the finish then I put the hammer down getting in front, however srichards put a bigger hammer in the mix 7w/kg which I couldn’t match , when I tried .We all ended up finishing about 1 second apart , srichards 34th, myself 35th and Christjan 36th.

I thought I was prepped for this race. I got a good nights rest, ate well in the morning and had time to settle in and even do a small warmup before the start. I knew I had to start off fast with this group but I wasn’t expecting what the leaders pulled off. I went from 8th to 36th in the matter of seconds. I didn’t want to blow up in the first mile, so I settled back and tried to find some people to ride with.
My initial goal was to be just inside the top 20 with a time of one hour. My PR was 1:07 so I knew I needed drafting help to do it.
I’ll be honest that the first few miles were a blur. I had a project in the back of my mind and my race wasn’t starting as good as I hoped. I know I rode with rogerstrainer, zenda and Dolph for a couple miles. Then Dolph was gone, he launched up a hill and I couldn’t counter. I was riding the front of a small group and didn’t realize I had ridden off the front. I found myself in no mans land, half a mile behind the guy in front of me and a quarter mile ahead of the guy behind me. I managed to stay that distance for 90% of the race, riding solo, so had I gone with Dolph I would’ve been closer to my goal.
As I continued to pedal I was hoping someone would start to slow down. Mich became my target. I saw his wattage drop a couple times on some of the last hills so I knew that that was my opportunity to attack. I also had motivation form behind as Floehaner was crawling back, at one point getting within 600 feet of me. I pushed harder and was making big gains on Mich, in fact I thought I’d catch him and try to launch a last ditch attack at kim kwan to try and get 30th. My efforts were thwarted by lack of time left. I crossed the line in 32nd place.
Results like these are a struggle to me. It was nowhere near what I wanted or thought I could do, but I still set a new PR. I averaged 228w and had an IF of 1.02.
Nice job to everyone that finished, hell nice job to those that attempted. It was a heck of a race. Looking forward to the double header days.

Good figures mate, it was just a mad race with loads of strong riders fighting all the way down the order! Next weeks double header will be very interesting indeed. Thanks for commenting!

Fast and furious, that’s how I would sum up this race. Above is a link to the race from my pov. Seeing how big is the group and who’s starting I knew it was going to be a tough one. I started really hard trying to get to the very front of the race and hoping to stay there but I realised pretty quickly that wasn’t gonna happen. I got to the front, burnt a lot of matches and had to ease off. Very stupid of me. Ended up in the group 6 of us with c.v. lrollin Svard Loki1972 and tranberg. I think this was the closest ever finish I’ve seen so far. If you watch my video I must say I’m very confused by the timing. I finished just behind Svard but then the positions changed…
These are the times from the route times which show time to the last hundredth of a second:
    c.v. 57.27.53
    me 57.27.58
    tranberg 57.27.60
How much closer do you want to get? 😆
I really like this route, I’ve done it twice before. I think everyone is getting stronger because of all this racing on Rouvy 😁 Well done everyone👏
