MUCKERS FEBRUARY CHAMPIONSHIP RACE 2. 08/02/24

ROUVY Route Used : Challenge Wanaka | New Zealand 40 km | 24.85 miles 1466ft. climbing

“All trainer” types allowed for the rest of the February championship after a “smart trainer” only first round. Top 50 from the main race get stats checked so if not a Friend who also shares heart rate data, you will be classed as a NED and removed from the results. All the other races will be held to the same standard so if you set a time that blends into the main races top 50, then you will also be checked.

Quality field tonight with “Gil.Mad.io” getting the win, but only by 5 seconds over “Alieno79” in 2nd. A nice 4 way fight for the last podium place next with “luca_ma” getting it by just beating “BareRemi” in 4th, “karel_sousek” 5th and “hinsbergen” in 6th. “andy_emmo” in a little bit of no mans land gets a nice 7th, but then another mini fight for 8th is won by “ErlendSundstrom” just in front of Top Placed Mucker “grochang” in 9th, “lrollin” in 10th and “Keitholdgit” in 11th. 12th place goes to “Stefan_Schmidt” , 13th to “nielsbrynnum” and then “RockerRoy” in 14th, who had done the race earlier on in the day as well and was slightly faster tonight, no doubt helped by the drafting. All these top 14 riders got this 24.8 mile race done in under 60 minutes! Like i said earlier, Quality field!

2 long term Muckers next with “tomleriger” getting 15th and “denny44” 16th, a 3 way sprint for 17th won by “Grep.” , just in front of “tranberg” in 18th and “Peteroldgit” in 19th, with last mention tonight going to another long term Mucker “Svard”

So a great race and a really good test! Some riders will still use the championship events as a recovery/training session if that’s what they need and that is great! You still get the points, you get the much needed training session in, and, still get the challenge route ticked off.

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

Equal 44th in the championship, and quite fitting its with “rouvy1bryon” who i had a race long battle with…. well I say battle: i was desperately trying to hang on and I feel he was more comfortable! I feel I raced as best i could tonight, accelerating when i needed to and drafted as much as possible so I could hang on to a very fast pack as well. We had a 4 way sprint at the end that Bryon went quite early on, so i stayed tucked up behind the other 2 then launched my sprint which did get me past those 2 and then followed bryon over the line. Enjoyed that but i feel its gonna take this kind of effort every week to hopefully stay in the top 50!

  2. Manuel Lamber says:

Really a good race, I worked very well, intelligent start, not too hard and then going in search of the right train. Tonight I worked very well with friends SillySilNL, Slyfly, RaTim, AnonHemust and Kin_kvan. We kept a good pace, for me 3.01 agv w/kg, often compared to Tuesday I was moved to the right side losing a bit of draw, but I didn’t want to risk losing ground and so I worked hard.
At the end, no one wanted to start so as not to get burned, and this time Silvia played her jocker, launched the sprint at about 1.1 km taking advantage of a small descent… I started charging straight behind with the fear of running out of petrol, I held well arriving at the photo finish with Slyfly with a lead and behind Silvia. Nice work friends 💪

  3. Tom (tomlerieger) says:

1st I had troubles to log in with my new pad, 2nd I grab my wife’s laptop to download the race route, 3rd I rode the warm up on my I phone. But I was ready for the main race on I pad. Strange start: I saw only 3-4 other riders and ghosts but no darft at all! Found myself in a huge pack at around place 26 after the first minutes. These kind of routes fit me well, Some up and downs, bit no longer steep climbs, We races well with Muckers Andy_up and denny44. Hard attacks on every climb from Grep an yayarecki, they powered with more than 6W and I strugled a lot to stay in the group after 1/3 of the race. But I recovered well on the 1st longer downhill in the draft and the legs felt better and better. We catched some Danish dynamite; Tranberg and kjohanessen. It was my first race this week so I felt fresh and tried to go deep in the clims but without attacking, so a gap of 50m openend after the last hill at km 12 and I tried a solo to the finsh. I saw my catchers working hard to get my but denny44 broke their rhytm when he took the lead (thank you Daniel for your help and teamwork. Very happa with my echappe solo and the mention I got! Pedal on and cu sunday morning, cheers Tom

    • Grep says:

That was me, who gave you the 50m gap after the last hill. I believed you will not risk and you will be back in the group soon. My fault. But the race is a race and you made the right decision at the right time, awesome! We did not have any ambitions to pursue you then. The race was additionally more realistic. As you already wrote many ghosts were very embarrassing during the race and not many drafts were caused. I hope new ROUVY releases will solve that sooner rather than new colors in the menu. I enjoyed the race very much,  thank you mates.

      • Neil Rushby says:

this is why we do this comments section! to read two different sides to a race, from so many thousand miles apart in real life! very interesting and thanks for taking the time to share!

  4. Steven Ludford says:

About 1 hour before this race something told me to join the 2.5w/kg paced Muckers with Dolphwader and Jeff65. After 2 weeks unwell I have managed numerous low intensity rides in the last week but my HR (too high) is not comparable to my effort by normal standards. The 2.5w/kg group became 5 strong as we were joined by Danish rider Ogee and my Farnham & Mucker teammate Gazinho. I am so grateful to these 4 boys as I genuinely needed the protection of their draft from start to finish and I sensed they understood it, if I rolled through to the front one of them would instantly come by and take the lead from me. Ultimately I enjoyed this ride and will continue to keep my foot off the accelerator for a little longer.

  5. Andrew Emmerich (andy_emmo) says:

This was an early Friday morning race for me here in Oz, and the first Championship race one I’ve done – I had to change my shift at work to do it! Had a powerful start but couldn’t keep up with the guys at the front on the initial climbs (climbing is definitely not my thing). Dropped back into a great group who stuck together for the majority of the race. I put the pedal to the metal in the last km or so, since I knew I didn’t have much left for a full-on sprint finish, though I might be able to TT it to the line, which worked!! Ending up in “no mans land” but fully expecting an attack from the group behind the whole way, but they were focussed on a tactical battle between themselves and seemed to have forgotten me! Great race, thanks to all the guys I rode with and Muckers for an awesome race series!! Doubly cool to be equal 33rd with SillySilNL on the points table!

    • Silvia (SillySilNL) says:

Yeah, I saw that too Andy. I’m so honored 😇. Difference is you only needed 1 race to reach this position and I needed 2 🤣. So I expect you to climb this table fast if you keep on joining us on Thursdays! Sadly I won’t be there next 2 Thursdays ( ⛷️ holiday), but I hope to be there for the final February race. I do expect to see your name in the top 10 of the table then, so make me proud my friend 😉

      • Andrew Emmerich (andy_emmo) says:

Haha, I’ll do my best Sil! Hopefully I can get a permanent shift change at work. Sorry to hear you’ll miss the next couple of races, I’m sure it was a tough decision to miss the Muckers races!!! Have fun and see you for the final race!

        • Neil Rushby says:

1st, wow! changing shifts to enter our races! respect! 2nd it’s really great to have you with us, we don’t get many regular Australians racing with us so to have you with us makes the worldwide in muckers worldwide more erm worldwide 😏, 3rd great recap of the race but 4th I’m now gonna have to re thing my mental image of you as i had you down as an “emo” kid on a bike and not as it seems, a proper strong cyclist with his last name nickname emmo!

          • Andrew Emmerich (andy_emmo) says:

“Emo!” 🤣 that’s gold! I’ve missed the race series from Rouvy, like pedalitaly and their championship races, like La Vuelta. Rouvy “official” has really dropped the ball which you can see with the number of people participating. So I was super happy to see your race series with a decent number of people competing when I came back! Thanks, it must be a lot of work!! And priorities, so cycling definitely comes before work, a shift change is nothing!!!

Exactly as you described it Squalo Manuel. Great working (hard!) together in a nice group. I started in a great group with Muckers like Halair, Boogybill, Hellcat around 27 place. But I couldn’t do what they were doing for over an hour, so I dropped them and rested until you guys picked me up. Great group of 7 and lateron there were 5 of us. After the last uphill everyone seemed to be waiting or resting, so I rested too and thought up this plan. I know if I sprint with the others they have more power and more weight on a downhill, so I’ll loose. The last part of the route goes down steeper, so because of the speed you already have it’s hard to catch someone then. So what if I surprise these 4 men and go first at a moment they don’t see it coming? So I started the attack a bit before we had 1000 m to go and went as hard as I could (8,0 W/kg) standing on my pedals for as long as I could. You were the first to react Manuel, so I kept on going until you were out of my draft. That was hard work! I was glad you gave up after that 😰, but then of course you, Slyfly, RaTim and Gaetan42 started to battle together for the finishline, so I had to keep going to stay in front of you. Only 35 meters… Standing, sitting, standing, sitting, that was a long 1000 m, but my plan worked 😎 . My heart, lungs and legs were burning, but I loved this race 😃. 37 place 💪. Thanks guys

that was awesome! i got out of breathe reading it!! very brave going early then having to keep an eye on the riders behind and just praying they don’t go stupid big on their finishes and scoop you up! well done and see you at the last race!

My only Championship race this month so wanted to race this one and try to improve technique / strategies 🤣
Started off the gate at 8w/kg with high cadence and averaged 4,2w/kg for the first minute, which settled me into roughly 25th position. Rode with a nice group for a while but eventually fell off that one, and joined the smaller group trailing short behind. Seeked draft when needing it (often!) but also pushed on up front when possible.

Towards the end I was in a small group with BoogieBill trailing, so tried to bridge him in and when CelestinaJ went for the sprint at around 400m I managed to stay on his wheel and push the little bit extra to overtake hin at the very line – Photo finish! 🙂

Legs not feeling as fresh as on Tuesday but I managed to match my power, so very happy with this ride overall. Will over the next month or two try to drop a few kg of fat, and see if that can make me more of a threat up-front 😂

    Cheers!

Wow… what a race… My plan from the start was to have a steady pace through the entire distance. I could see that a big bunch of riders went all in at the start… so I started my race on a 34th place.
Through the first third of the race distance I gained some places and was climbing up the ladder. But then an unexpected thing happened, when I was reaching for the water bottle I accidentally dropped my iPad on the floor and my monitor disconnected. I had to get off my bike and reconnect everything… during that time I dropped a few places. 🙃 I had to use a lot of energy to get back.
I knew that there is going to be a fast sprint, but my legs were tired 😁
So photo finish was the decider… Congrats! 0.1 sec infront of me 😁😁😁
Looking forward for the next race!
      Cheers 🍻

I recall your stop, you did a really strong pull to catch back up with us after that 💪
        Excellent racing!

        • Neil Rushby says:

wow! great re-cap guys and a great tribute to the fact you don’t need loads of riders to have a great race, just that 1 or 2 that push you that much more than you would have normally done on a just ride!

Thanks Neil for choosing this course again. It’s always a pleasure to compare your stats with previous ones, and especially when you improve with 50 seconds🎉
Of course the 50sec. improvement wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for Andy Emmo and Keitholdgrit who pushed really hard – Thanks guys🙏

I unfortunately lost my true patriot Danish fellow Nielsbrynnum just before halfway point. His legs was not recover enough after all his hard working Strava KOM this week – keep it low next week Niels and use those breaks 🚴🏼‍♂️💨😉
Back to the race Keitholdgrit push away on the longer descents and Andy_Emmo bridge the gap on the flat part. At one point (on the last long climb) Keitholdgrit had over 150 meters, but still Andy_Emmo reel him in and took ErlandSundstrom and Irollin with us too.
5 km before the finish line Andy_Emmo got away, I certainly didn’t want to close the gap and then afterwards make a sprint. So it had to go down to the finish line positioned from 8 to 11th. Nobody made a move the last 4 km, and it went all down to a 200 meters sprint. This was like a déjà vu calling Irollin back to November the 9th 2023 Muckers Thursday race. ErlandSundstrom was too strong and got the 7th position, but Irollin and I had the exactly same sprint where I just managed to put my leaning head over the line first🚴🏼‍♂️🚴🏼‍♂️🇩🇰🇫🇷🎉 Thanks for another brilliant ride – keep rolling Neil and Kyle you are doing a great job👏

I got back fropm the dentiosts with 0:46 to spare and the adrenalin kicked in to allow me to close to the second group.
I knew, and know I will always be last in the sprint being only 62 kgs and unable to put out more than 500watts so my only tactic is to try to break up the group on the climbs and hope 1 or 2 follow me and the others get dropped. so i’m last of 3 instead of last of 5! It doesn’t usually work and it didn’t this week but I will keep trying. When Andy Emmo went with a couple of kms to go i think we were all too tired to chase. Chapeau to him and to the rest of the group!

    • Neil Rushby says:

as much as i love getting credit for the race choice, you know i just try and use the challenge routes that i think will be the best to race on, and if not the best, the most interesting. But thank you anyway 😊😂. I love this route though and i also improved over my last visit here which does give you the feeling that things are still going in the right direction. well done Mucker.

Transparency 😃 Please can we see the top 20 riders posting videos of calibrated weigh ins and turbo trainer calibration. Have a look at my race media from Thursday posted on Strava. My WB Atom NG auto calibrates so I can’t calibrate it manually. The Atom is certified by the UCI and IOC across its entire wattage range). Video shows no +15% offset power meter pedals!! Use your trainer’s power to report and as control.
Let’s see those videos next time guys and girls 🤣

sounds like you had a great race, thanks for sharing…..😏🤔🤔😉 But no one needs to do any such thing on a Muckers race, just race and enjoy yourself and get ready to get out in the real world as best as you can!

Just don’t start carrying some weighing scales around with you in the real world and demanding that the person that beats you up a hill stops and gives you his weight! 😁

As the great and somewhat sarcastic Mucker1974 once said, about 30 seconds ago:

The weight of the scales will slow you down and decrease enjoyment in real life, just as the “mental” weight of worrying about others will slow you down and decrease enjoyment in the on-line world.

      peace and love!

  10. Andreas (Slyfly) says:

Silvia (SilliySilNL) and Shark (Squalo) have already written a great report about our race👏I don’t really have anything to add. I’m just surprised that I was able to keep up with the two of them and RaTim for so long.
The day before I looked at the last kilometers of the route (as I always do) and noticed that the last 900 meters were a bit downhill. I was already planning to start the sprint there, but in the end I didn’t have the strength to do it anymore 🥵…That’s why I could only wait and see what happened.
Silvia started sprinting… I was behind, but she was too fast,…Shark then overtook me,…but in the last few meters I was able to reduce the distance to him, a close finish between us two, him in front of me,… and an outstanding Silvia in front of us… Great race – and thanks to everyone for the draft🙏👍😉

Tonight was the championship race, so it’s the only race of the week where I give it 100% effort. I knew it was going to be tough, with 24 miles of racing and 1455 ft of climbing. I was hoping for a top 50 position. A year ago, I was aiming for a top 10.

We have some amazingly strong riders in Muckers Races. Anyway, off we went. I found myself in the mid-50s, so I decided to try and gain some ground on a few riders ahead. Then a few riders passed me. That’s it, 58th. Need more effort; how can I give more than 100%?

I managed to catch a group with Mucker1974 and Mick_Michel, slowly passing them, and now I’m in the low 50s. Caught up to hannibal-von-taunus (new rider, welcome) and nms007, another new rider. This put me at 48th. All I needed to do was hang on for the last 4 miles.

Nms007 was pushing hard to catch me, and I was trying to catch skripnit, but nobody caught anyone. Finished 48th, but after the NEDs, I ended up 40th. Pleased with that, considering there were 91 starters. See you Sunday for the Sunday Social Ride.

    • Neil Rushby says:

well done Mucker. Tried to jump on when you went past but it just took me up to a level i knew i’d bonk at so had to let you go and just watch as you slowly go closer and closer to the top of my nearly list and disappear. I was only able to see you back on the list when i rolled to the front of my pack, so that wasn’t very often as i was trying to stay in the draft for as much as possible 😉. see you Sunday.

Rock’n’roll event in far New Zealand. I was concerned, how long i will stay with fresh and hungry guys, knowing im -10w penalized automatically because of running. Thus i stayed focused as much as possible and was mostly in search for every drafting moment. Typical all out start and then group of ten riders formed. Flattish profile, but with many attacks. Alieno looked so strong, same Gilmad and Luca.

When those first two went into breakaway after half of the race, i was almost done, very close to cramps, because almost got distanced two times before and had to erase those gaps. Luca and Baremi left in the next little climb, this is exactly those ~10w i was missing. I continued with Chris, hoping we could catch duo ahead of us. They were not far, but far enough. No sprint today as Chris did not attack. Awesome race. Thank you all who made this!
