MUCKERS South Africa Race 2 of 3. 04/05/23
Rouvy Route Used: Knysna to Sedgefield | South Africa | 14.6 miles | 961.29 ft climbing
Route 2 from the Tour de South Africa challenge.
Registered 28 | 17 finishers | 0 dnf | 11 dns
The first race in this championship was a cracker with a lot of fast riders battling for the top points. I expected this to be the same as these routes in South Africa really temp the best riders to come and have a go with 16 riders already registered 24 hrs before the start.
28 registered and 17 finishers when all said and done, a great turn out for this superbly challenging race route! We have a Muckers Worldwide race winner tonight!!!!!! “denny44” claiming gold, just in front of tonight’s earlier race winner “nelsonsnyder” in 2nd and another Muckers Worldwide rider “Andy_UP” in 3rd! 2 Muckers on the podium!! superb effort from this top 3 and such a shame for “EdAlves” who was just behind in 4th place.
Around 30 seconds later we had another battle, this time for 5th with Spanish rider “chorus” just getting the better of Italian rider “alfiocrist75”
a duo of riders whos final gaps makes it look like a solo ride with “Dugas” coming home 38 seconds later in 7th, then Muckers Worldwide Rider/founder “Kylofski” just under a minute behind him in 8th.
Another 60+ seconds later came “Kin_kwan” in 9th ( making it 9 different countries represented in the top 9 places! ) closely followed by 4th Muckers Worldwide rider in the top10, “Jeff65” with a cracking effort to get into the top 10 in this very strong race!
Cheers to everyone who jumped on this race tonight, and especially those of you that did the 2 races. this was a tough night of racing.

2 very good results from “denny44” outs him nicely in front of “Andy_UP” but will these 2 help each other out on the last race??? “Kin_kwan” is sat nicely in 3rd but will need either a no show or a very strange/poor result from the top 2 to win this now.

i went flat out in the first race tonight so i wanted to treat this as a bit of training so decided to see what happened if i just stuck to HR zone 5 for the race. went ok and i just concentrated in not going over my 153ish limit. nice scenery and route but i just had to take this one relatively easy after than first all out effort. Really pleased with a win and a 3rd for the Muckers tonight though. really pleased for those guys.
Ditto well done Andy_up and Denny44, great effort
After race one, didnβt hold too much hope for race two, after exhausting myself earlier, but too my surprise I managed to stay with the leaders, until the first climb, and then as per usual got dropped! Managed to catch Ryanio, and nearly caught Kin Kwan, but was pretty happy to roll in,in 10th position. More flat rides please!
Ignore Jeff65, more hilly rides please π
π i have no control on the routes. i just schedule the challenge routes as best i can. but i know which routes are good for some and not for others!
@jeff. Good effort of chasing. I tried very hard to hold my 60m lead.
π
After chilling on the first ride I knew I could catch some people on some of the climbing on this one. The only problem was there was only 1 main climb and it was about 350 ft. I passed Jeff65, kin_kwan and Ryanio but then I had about 8 miles on nearly flats to keep them form catching me. Thanks for the extended exercise tonight.
Well done Mucker. I know you’ll be getting out in the real world more often now so i appreciate you joining the races when you can.
Strong climbing!!!! Pushed very hard to catch up after the first hill, but couldn’t keep up on the second hill. See you next race.
At the start, everybody was looking at that one 3Km climb and didn’t want to put to much effort in the first 4Km of the ride. So a big group formed and it was nice that everyone had the feeling they where riding for first place at this moment. All this was about to change on the climb. I calculated how much power I could give from top to bottom on this climb, and so I started relative slow and saw about 4 guys riding away from me on the start of the climb. I don’t know why my teammate Denny stayed with me, as I think he could go faster at this point, but maybe he did some math on his own, or he thought we could be working together after the climb. Anyway, it gave me confidence not to be alone after the climb. We rolled up 2 riders that started the climb too fast, and left them behind. The 2 strongest riders of the race, at least in my eyes, Ed and Nelson, where still in front. They where about 150m ahaid, and the gap wasn’t increasing, yet I had little hope to ever see the front again, as I know they are too strong for me. I did my best to take pulls, but clearly Denny was again a little bit stronger and my main concern was not to get dropped and see the chasers flew past me. A 4th place would be great! By the last little uphill, I felt I had not much left and somehow, Denny keeps going strong. I had no idea we were closing in on the 2 in front, as I was focussed on staying in Denny’s draft. Suddenly the avatars pop up in the distance with only 500m to go. The gap was down to 50m and Denny kept increasing his speed. I saw all the stars and planets as I too had to increase the power a lot with empty legs. We flew past Ed with 100m to go and I had to drop the power. To my surprise, Denny claimed victory. I don’t know how he managed to pass Nelson also. Very very happy with my 3rd and a victory for the team. This was so much fun!
Reads like proper team riding there and a never give up attitude! Superb account of the race and thank you for taking the time to comment.
So many people at the start line, congrats and well done! I will hopefully have the chance to join again next or the week after next. I am still very ill. I will then be way behind in fitness. No top 10 mentions anymore π’π
we miss you Chris, please get well soon and more importantly, don’t come back too early! we will all be here when you are good and ready Mucker.
Didn’t do the warm up race and saved my legs for the this race. The route looked quite good to me, more flats than uphill sections. The first and longest climb started at 5km and we were 9 riders in the leading group. The pace so far was not to high and I felt quite good. Right at the bottom of the climb “nelsonsnyder” and “EdAlves” started to attack by going over 5.0 W/kg. Long climb so I had to save some energy and let them go. My teammate “AndUp” and me found a good rhythm at 4.2 W/kg and we passed a few riders. When we reached the top we were in 3rd and 4th position. Gap to the front duo was about 80m. I was quite long in the red zone and happy to recover a bit on the downhill. At halftime the next climb was waiting fo us. Andy and me worked excellent together but the gap to the front duo increased to 150m/17 secs. The last 10km were almost flat by only 40hm left. We were pushing and taking turns but we didn’t get closer to the leading duo. Didn’t really think about chasing them anymore. I just wanted to give everything and having fun on the bike. We were pushing hard at these little last climb. I noticed that Andy was struggling but giving everything to hold my wheel. There was still a huge gap of 110m to the front duo. At the downhill I kept pushing hard and we were chasing the leaders. We kept the speed hight which was good. About 350m before the finish I noticed that the leaders were tired and we had a realisitc chance to catch them. I started my sprint and gave everything I had (which was more than I thought) and first passed “EdAlves” and 40m before the finsih line I got “Nelsonsnyder” as well. Was an great race and a pleasure to ride with my teammate Andy. Was just excellent teamwork. We supported each other by taking turns and that gave us the opportunity to be on the podium. Thanks Andy!
thank you for the detailed comment. sounds like a superb effort from you and Andy and a true example of the race isn’t over till you cross the line!
Congratulations to all the participants but I think Andy_UP had some idea of what happened.
Nelson is on a very different level, he’s an incredible man I’ve raced a lot with, and whenever I see him at the start I know he’s a strong candidate to win. I’m a heavy guy at 85kg and where I’m strong is in the sprints, so I looked at the profile and said that despite coming from 5 days of flu if I reached the final plan I’d have a chance of winning. What happened on this one we started with a good group and on the frist climb Nelson and I gained an advantage and whenever I was stay behind, he waited for me, it was an incredible attitude on his part… So I said I wasn’t going to attack him on the final that He had every right to win… And here was my mistake, when we started going down to the end the advantage was +176mt for the group behind, they never caught us if we went at a normal pace, i could go easy 90% on my ftp. As I said I wasn’t going to attack, I slowed down and Nelson thought I was bad and also started to slow down, the longer he waits for me the more I slow down, we almost stopped, we were going 40% of our ftp, zone 1 almost stopped… I didn’t even look at who was behind us and in the end we went caught
oh no Ed!!!! caught napping at the end! you 2 are really strong riders so i think you both just caught out being too nice! It would be interesting to see what Nelson was thinking as well.
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and see you on another race soon!
Hi Ed. I was really surprised that we closed that gap. Now I know why. This happened to me before as well. Always look behind π Both of you made an excellent race and I know how hard you must work at the climbs with 85kg because I have the same weight. Well done!!!!
As I put all my effort to race 1, this race was just easy going, enjoy the landscape and ride. By the way, nice cars there in South Africa. Have you seen them overtaking us somewhere the middle of the route?
Coming closer to the finish and see the line, the racer was awaken and sirfin and I started the final sprint. We went over the line with exactly the same time, funny π
we rode together for a while as i was just sticking to zone 5. i did wonder once or twice if you were hanging back for me but i just hopped you saw my figures and worked out what i was doing. I was fighting hard with myself not to go after you and sirfin as I kept catching him on the climbs so I was confident i could have had him but I stuck to my routine anyway
Yes, I noticed that you were not in race mode. I also tried not to overpower because the first race was really hard. In the final sprint I couldn’t hold back and had to attack…
