MUCKERS SUNDAY HILL CLIMB RACE! 22/10/23

ROUVY Route Used: Akaroa to Wainui | Lands End Rd | New Zealand | 19.91 miles | 3225 ft climbing

120 Registered | 72 Starters | 55 Finishers | 17 DNF | 48 DNS

Nice 20 miler with a little climb at the end…. what’s not to like!!?? That climb at the end for starters! 😂😉. Tough route this after all and i can see why 17 called it quits, but to the 55 of you that crossed that line, how sweet did that feel knowing you didn’t quit and you’d just ended a ride with a 1700ft single climb as well. Ok, I’m probably not talking to the top guys going for the win here. but the rest of you who can relate, well done!!!

Results have now been checked, and also checked on Strava (I have the time on Sundays to do this) and once we have our Muckers Worldwide top 20 placings, I do stop checking those that won’t get a mention

Todays winner is “Alan-H” with a superb race finishing just over 5 minutes faster than “Kaihu” who claims the silver! The another 5 minutes later comes our Bronze placed rider “bismo” who pulled out a nice 28 second to “RuddBaars” in 4th who finishes over 1 minute 40 seconds in front of fellow countryman “Dave12” who gets awarded 5th!

6th place is awarded to Portuguese rider “leonelcunha” who finishes in front of the strong German Duo of “Stefan_Smit” in 7th and “qiaozhi” in 8th. We then have 2 Muckers Worldwide team riders with “nielsbrynnum” claiming top Mucker in 9th and “Grochang” in 10th! “PatrykS_Gdynia_PL” claims 11th , over 20 seconds up the road from “EddyDomino” in 12th.

We then have a run of 6 riders who are either not friends so I can’t see any data, or are friends but they don’t use a heart rate sensor. Shame as these are quite high positions, but its nothing personal, rules are rules.

But it means the following riders now get bumped up from outside the official top 20, to now be in a position to get a mention! We start with Muckers Worldwide Team rider “Kylofski” who gets awarded 13th, then a sprint off for 14th was won by “Carlos64_GURE” just in front of “nvdb” in 15th. “MatthiasHeil” gets awarded 16th then we have another big gap to the next verified rider:

17th is “Dudu1984” , 18th to Muckers Worldwide team rider “SwissChris69” and 19th to new regular rider “TomBuilder”!

So who gets the final mention?? “LaurenWolff” gets a verified 20th place in what I think might be her first Muckers Race?? Or at least her first in a very long time. Well done and was great to have you join us!

Thank you everyone for doing this race today and i hope you got out of it what you set of to achieve!

Next Muckers Race is the last round in the October Championship on Tuesday night at 7pm (UK). Link Attached:

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

This was a struggle today. So Happy i made it to the finish though. But i need to say thank you to some riders: First to SwissChris69 who dropped back and pulled us along till we let him go on the climb due to feeling guilty about holding him to my pathetic pace today! 2nd thank you to Jeff69 for accompanying me on this struggle. I really think we helped each other get up that last climb! And last thanks go to the duo that kept the pressure on us up that last climb! Big_Pete who caught and passed us, and S.Cornet who just didn’t catch us but was closing in!

Firstly would like to thank Neil for organising and reporting on this race on a Sunday.Secondly was fantastic having Swiss Chris wait and pull us to the final climb, and then watch him overtake the other riders.Thirdly many thanks to Mucker for persuading me not to dnf going up the last climb, as I was spent.Hope to see you on Tuesday

So what can I say. Not my best race. Wasn’t even able to stay on drafting from other riders doing 2,8 w/kg 🙁
But this it the payment from my body. Doing 4 tough rides in a row (days) without any resting or even recovery rides and starting a race in the morning without breakfast. I did forget there’s was these many meters to climb……. I need to take better care of my body. So beers from the local shop is ready for enjoyment tonight 🙂
Thanks for a great race Neil 🙂

    • Neil Rushby says:

but we did a recovery ride yesterday mucker 😂😉. was just one of those races but take a step back and it was well over 3000ft in under 20 miles! Not exactly a stroll in the park. well done mate!

      • Torben Adolph says:

Well not sure if it could be named a recovery ride on Saturday since the testosteron kicked in many times on our group :-p and I needed to do a long sprint just the get a chance from the other strong Muckers.
But it’s new week and I’m going to take better care of my body this week (at least in the beginning) and looking forward to our upcoming races 🙂

  4. Kai Hukkanen says:

In short, the race was tough, especially the last climb. The problems of a week ago have been overcome, thanks to the French cognac 🥂😃, maybe 😉. I celebrated a little, really a little, the achievement of 10,000 kilometers. If you want, you can read about the Starava Rouvy Club in more detail, thanks to everyone, another great competition 🚴‍♂️🏁👏

  5. Steven Ludford says:

Similar to Neil & Torben, a tough day today and one I will consign to the distant memory department. I decided to go fast at the start and find a group to draft, then repeatedly, I had 200ft backwards glitches every time I found people to ride with, which was quite demoralising to say the least. My PC may have been doing a background update so I can’t pin a finger on the root cause. Anyway, let’s ‘get this done’, a bit a teamwork with ‘wlindeboom’ was great and improved my mood, then managed to stay in touch with new Mucker ‘SillySilNL’ … almost … too strong for me on the climbs. Then it was a long climb watching my ‘Outside’ Farnham Road Club teammate ‘gunnera’ tap a beautifully steady pace to haul me in and take a further 3 minutes advantage to the line. Very nice route and luckily no punctures on the final descent.

Gracias a la organización y el rápido resumen de la carrera. A sido divertido correr con tanta gente y el circuito bonito y duro, sobre todo la última subida se ha hecho larga y dura por el cansancio acumulado y el ritmo alto de carera. Gracias

  7. Mads Grosen says:

What can I say? I love you guys or at least my wife think so. And my children thinks I’ve got a date in the garage every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. It might just be a honeymoon state, but you’ve tricks something in me🤩 So for now I will keep peddling with you guys as many times as possible🤘

    Thanks for another great ride.

  8. bismo says:

Thank you Muckers for the hard race. I started a bit too hard and in the last 5 k it was pure pure struggle. RuudBaars nearly broke me in half. Half dead I could hold him of. Superhappy with bronze! Cheers.

  9. Kyle Goodram says:

Zone 4 HR was my aim, but with just 4 hours of sleep and a hangover, I questioned whether I could even begin, let alone complete this ride. Starting at 3200ft in 20 miles, this is usually my kind of ride. As I pedalled on, I passed a few fellow Muckers. These races, it seemed, were turning out to be a good hangover cure.

I started to feel better as I pedalled, so I momentarily forgot about my Zone 4 target and pushed on a bit harder. While checking the rider list near me, I noticed Rouvy’s own “Lauren” racing in close proximity. Determined to keep up, I caught up to my fellow Mucker, “Andy_Up.”

Just when I thought things were going well, I was hit with a massive stitch, probably due to a combination of skipping breakfast and my hangover. I couldn’t afford to quit now, especially with “Lauren” right behind me. It seemed like “Andy_Up” sensed my struggle as he provided me with a much-needed boost, pulling me all the way to the last climb, which ascended 1700ft.

I knew I could easily maintain 3.2 W/KG on this final climb, so I thought Andy would stick with me. However, he slowed down, so I decided to push on alone. In the end, I finished 22nd out of 72 starters. To my surprise, when I checked the report later, I had jumped to 13th place and even received a mention in the Muckers Race report.

With my unexpected success, it looks like I’ll be needing to purchase another T-shirt from the Muckers Worldwide shop: Men’s Classic Tee – Mention on Muckers Race Report. The reason for my jump in the rankings was that some riders didn’t adhere to the race rules and regulations.

  10. Adrian Osborn says:

Hi Neil and Rouvy Team, thanks for organising a great race, I really enjoyed it, even though it was hard, this is my second Sunday Race event completed this month, having competed in the Freddy Maertens Sunday Race, which was virtually a mirror image of this race , but the big climb was very early, so may be I could pace it better.
So this ride I should have gone harder… easy after the event to see what I should have done better!!.
    and all before breakfast.
I use a variety of cycling apps, Rouvy, My Whoosh,Zwift, Virtual Pro and( Rgt,not much longer ), with Rouvy and My Whoosh giving me the best satisfaction.
Now I have found the Muckers race events, looks like I will be doing a few more…hooked on the first race…!!

  11. Andy_UP says:

Wasn’t really going for best position. So helped teammate and mountain goat Kyle. I knew he would fly up the last climb and the only thing I could do in this race to be of some use, is to give him as much draft and speed possible to the bottom of the last climb. Than I switched to a nice HR Zone 4 effort. Lauren Wolff past me in the second half of the climb. Near the end, I thought well, let’s have some fun and race a bit, so I closed the gap. She seemed to have trouble to adjust to my pace when I passed her, but boy was I wrong. On the final steep part she attacked doing about 7w/kg and gave me a lesson in racing. Now I see it was for an official 20th place and a mention. That stings, auch. I hope you race some more with us Lauren, I have a score to settle… 😉

  12. Dominique " EddyDomino" RODRIGUEZ says:

Great races this week-end! I like too much racing with Rouvy: it helps completing challenge roads!
I rode both races: Saturday & Sunday. The Sunday road was excellent with four little climbs before the challenging “Bossu Rd”. I started cautiously, avoiding the super speedy departure of the “crazy racers “, then climbed each little hill at a good pace, tried to find cooperative racers for the descents & flat sections, and then produced my max effort at the end! Now, I’m preparing next Sunday double climb challenge…
