MUCKERS TUESDAY RACE NIGHT. 02/01/24

ROUVY Route Used: La Vuelta 2023 | Stage 8 – Xorret de Cati | 18.7 miles | 2496ft climbing.

2EARLY4ME RACE RESULT:

1st running of this early slot so was nice to see 6 riders on the start line, with the top 3 being regular Muckers racers so I hope this new slot works for some of you and grows! 🤞🤞🤞 Really fast times from “boogybill” , “transberg” who’s finishing times would have awarded them a top 20 place in the main race, and top Muckers Worldwide rider “SwissChris69” for a very strong 3rd place on the podium. and a special mention to Female rider “anca” with a superb time to claim 4th place!

MAIN RACE RESULT:

85 Registered | 61 Starters | 53 Finishers | 8 DNF | 32 DNS

This race for some reason won’t finish! its been 4 and a half hours since it started, yet ROUVY aren’t finalizing the results so I am unable to sort this out tonight like I normally do. (Its gone 11:45pm and its still showing as active🤷‍♂️ even though the last rider to cross the line was over 3 hours ago, so I’m off to bed and will carry on tomorrow.

Race results all finalized by ROUVY and we are good to go. 1st place is a NED, so “Gil.Mad.io” just pips Top Muckers Worldwide Team Rider over the line “Tuden” who gets the team its 2nd podium of the day! what a great start to the year! A minute later “karel_sousek” comes over the line in 4th, then a long gap of 2 minutes and 38 seconds before the next three “adampel”, “RocketRoy” and “Campinhos” race over the line with just 4 seconds separating them all! 2nd Mucker over the line, and leading another 3 way fight comes “Grochang” just in front of “Stefan_Schmidt” and “Keithaitch” who rounds out the top 10.

11th “anasto”, 12th “A2-569-DIEGO-DONATI” AND 13TH “Guthinger-Mike” all come over the line solo, with 3 Muckers Team riders next with “tomleriger” 14th, “Mike ‘I’m taking it easy’ Hagen” in 15th and “Groenen” in 16th all very close together. Over 90 seconds later “m-forby” pops over the line, with a NED behind then a duo of German Muckers taking the last 2 mention places with a nice return to form for “uffzynda” in 19th and “denny44” just holding off 21st to get into this tough top 20!

Well done to all who finished this pretty tough route. Remember Tuesdays are set up as races and obviously the top guys put it in, but anyone can join in and just use these to help get challenges completed, race, or do some zone work. all are welcome! I’ve included all the different categories that ROUVY allow me to filter the results into below, plus the results for the 2LATE4ME race are at the bottom of this blog, as are the links to Thursdays Championship race.

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

Not the best from me tonight as I had planned on taking it easy, but soon got sucked into trying to keep with fellow Muckers Kylofski and Andy_UP for the first climb and then just died after the long downhill. So attempted a nice and easy recovery to the base of the last climb, then just focused on staying over 2.5w/kg all the way up with Rens in assistance,. and we just caught one after the other. I was so determined up that climb to catch and pass robinagy due to how far up the road he was and i needed a carrot, that when i finally caught him. i was cooked!! only racing makes you do this!! i then had to go even deeper to go over the crest without him on my wheel so i could pull out a manageable gap. i went from 53rd to 48th up a climb! so I’m quite happy with that as i was pretty much next to last at the bottom of it. hopefully put in a better overall performance on Thursday! 🤞

Very good job for the diversity result table. Thanks for your work Neil and Kyle 👍

      • Neil Rushby says:

Thank you, I’m not sure for how long i can keep going with the extra tables, but i really find them very interesting and would love it if we had over 10 in each category as I’d just limit it to the top 10 and then I could actually take an average of the top 10 and see which age group won the team “age” race🙄😏. But I do really want to at least try and include the other versions of the race at the different start times so everyone feels part of the whole thing even if they were on it alone! I was worried because i wanted to do this, meant i was publishing the blog a day later and that would lessen the interest and comments but it seems ok doesn’t it. cheers again, Neil

🙂 Nice to read this, I’m happy that I gave some extra inspiration to you 🙂
It could have been a narrower finish if my front shifter would have been been working properly, but while messing with it at the top of the last hill you were 100meters ahead of me.

  2. Kyle Goodram says:

I don’t like hills anymore. After upgrading my turbo at Christmas (this one is more accurate and handles 16% gradients compared to my old one with 6%), I intended to do this as a Zone 4 ride. However, after just 5 minutes, I found myself already in Zone 5, so I thought, ‘Sod it.’

The first climb was okay; I had ‘skripnit’ for company. But as I hit the main climb, ‘skripnit’ had disappeared, and I was closing in on fellow Muckers ‘Slyfly’ and ‘remko_hijman.’ A third of the way up, we encountered a 21% grade, and I couldn’t push any harder. I was in my lowest gear, pulling 3.5 W/KG and hitting 172 BPM. As they say, I was ‘cooked.’ I wanted to give up, and I remembered what I said in a video I made a few weeks back: ‘If it gets hard, just go slower.’ I couldn’t go any slower, but I wasn’t going to quit. The 21% grade eased to 14%, and I kept going.

This is the second time I’ve done this route, and I was a lot slower this time—5 minutes slower on the last climb. See you all on Thursday for the Championship Race.

Thank you for your honest answer
I’m just surprised at the very different results on this tour. I always look at the route and requirements before the ride, 20% gradient is extreme. Only a Kickr Bike V1 and Kickr V5 can handle gradients of up to 20%. But there is a very big discrepancy when evaluating the performance, which you can of course see in the pulse rate, but exactly such races are not meaningful at all. I’m not went along, but watched and watching the second fight between skripnit and Mucker in 1976 was really exciting. Maybe you just have to accept these differences in the evaluation of races. It doesn’t matter to me anyway, as my training level is pretty low, I rode the KickrV5 and am currently riding a KickR Bike 1 and will continue riding in the future.

      • Neil Rushby says:

hi, don’t forget the Wattbike atom v2 I ride which has a 0-25% gradient range!

Its always going to be difficult to have everyone on a level playing field though. We want as many people to get involved in the racing and if they get the taste for it, then maybe upgrade to a smarter bike and see exactly where they are?. As we move forward, you get to know who are closest, most legit riders to compare yourself with and to try and beat. you always end up on the same piece of road as this group of riders and you know the race is on! And if we have more riders around us, making it interesting along the way, then great.

Tuesdays are really all about just getting the challenge route ticked off and doing it as a race format, is just an easy way to organize it and have it there as a ride in your training plan. Thursdays are flat out championship races, again just to make it interesting if you want it to be.

        regards, Neil

          Hello Neil,
In the past there have been the worst arguments because of the coach. HSVclaude and also with BoogieBoy? In any case, apparently you need to take a closer look at the trainers.
A kikr bike also has its advantages and disadvantages. If you take a closer look, you will notice certain errors. Yes, the new Tacx bike can also simulate a 25% gradient, but so far I haven’t come across a route on Rouvy that is over 20… 21% was. With my kickR V5 I stood with my full weight on the pedals and it was almost impossible to go any further with the 32 teeth. You couldn’t change the cassette from 10 to 34 on a D2. That’s why I bought a Kickr bike You can program everything, even 10-44 works with an ultrega. You could buy the KickR bike pretty cheaply last year at the end of Corona. As for sports, I’d rather be at the bottom of the express train than the front light of the hearse.
What I mean is that being the king of slow speeds is not a claim for me.

Hi all, I am a bit confused about the capability of our trainers to (correctly) simulate gradients [%].
What does it mean if the specifications of my trainer say “maximum incline simulation X %” but the hill is even steeper?
In the specs of my Garmin Tacx Neo2T SmartTrainer, it says
          – Maximum Incline Simulation: “25% Max Incline”
          – This value is calculated with a body weight of 143lbs (65 kg) in reference to the “strength” of the resistance unit when cycling 6 mph (10 km/h). It is important to understand that when your body weight is higher, the maximum incline the trainer is able to simulate will be lower. This does not include the weight of your bike which will also have an effect on the maximum incline. ”

So the bigger we are, the hill climb feeling becomes “easier” than it actualy should be, IF the gradient is around this maximum simulation value. Older trainers with lower gradient capability simulate false (easier) strength of resistance. Or do they explode after reaching this maximum incline simulation value ? :-).
Is is an advantage to have an old trainer which cannot simulate high slopes, because they the resistance doesn’t increase further?

Maybe I am too stupid to understand this.
I will install instead a monster fan behind me to blow me up the hills to compensate any disadvantages 😉

What I have learned in race one day later (not a Muckers race) in Australia: my max. heart rate (181 bpm) was not yet reached at tonights “Xorret de Cati” (177 bpm) 😉

By the way, I used my lowest gear tonight, which I rarely need at all, and only moved with 6 km/h or so up the hill. Kyle, I don’t like hills anymore, either!!! haha…

Old trainers are a disadvantage, at least in my case Chris. After 10% it doesn’t increase resistance but it decreases the speed. In my opinion it decreases the speed more than it should because riders I can ‘easily’ leave behind me on a flat or hilly ride always pass me on the steep climbs 🤷‍♀️. But at least I can keep on riding now. If I would ride on my husbands Tacx Neo I would probably stand still on a climb of 20% 🤣

          • HalAir says:

All Rouvy calculate on is W(input) and rider weight (value in Rouvy).
Wether your trainer can simulate above 10% or more do not affect your W-input number.

One factor that do play a factor is power vs cadence and gearing availabilty.
There is a specific cadence vs power point that we are individually most efficient in, so in my case my trainer max out at 10% gradient, so above that I can still maintain an ok cadence despite running a 34/28 gear ratio. If another rider have same gearing, but the trainer they use can simulate 20-25% this gear ratio will push their cadence/power ration outside what is efficient, and could grind them to a halt.

Powerwise there is no difference, but performance vice it play a role, just like in real llife where boke choice/clothing/gear ratios can be tailored to the specific task ahead.

If I push out 3w/kg at 88kg I would in Rouvy world be equally fast as an 50kg rider performing the same 3w/kg, but we may be operate as different efficiency points (physically and mentally) swaying the end result a little.

          • Kyle Goodram says:

My gear ratio for the turbo is currently 34/25 which is okay but at 16% it’s quite hard. My outdoor bike has a ratio of 39/28 and doing the Flanders hills last year was tough.

    • Neil Rushby says:

does this mean I have to remove you from all of last years results now Kyle?? 😉. But its quite interesting to see how 2 different turbo trainers have performed for you Mucker and at the end of the day, this is all about making you stronger for when you get back out in the real world, and you were strong last year anyway so this is only gonna make you stronger!!!

      • Kyle Goodram says:

You know me Mucker, better than any other rider here. Also you know what I can do in there real world so this new turbo is massive bonus for me. I.will stop complaining soon. 😁

a question rather than a comment from a newbie to muckers events. are Tuesday and Thursday seperate series are do both days count for the same series?

    • Mads Grosen says:

      Welcome Keith
Tuesday and Thursday races are separate series. Thursday races are the world championship battles of the month where the points for four or five races are calculated together.
      Hope to see tomorrow 😉

    • Neil Rushby says:

Hi Keith, as Mads says, Tuesdays are just stand alone races or whatever you want to do. just getting the challenge route completed. Thursdays are Race days.

I only did the “every race” championship in December as a way to try and keep everyone motivated to keep training in the month where we tend to back off. I’d never done that before so we are now back to our normal Muckers schedule. p.s try and get in the top 50 for the best points on a championship event as the top 50 get the chance of a points bump if we have any NEDs finishing in any of those places.

After two days of rest, I exaggerated by doing ski mountaineering in the morning and the classic challenge with you friends in the evening. I said I’m going slowly but after a few km I was looking for friends to follow. Big effort, maybe too much, I wasn’t able to keep the only woman of the SillySilNl race close to me… maybe for the next one. Luckily I took a good pass from Noccon and Mike Hagen if I’m not mistaken in the downhill and flat section. Then the last endless climb I tried to resist, and when I had Kyle in my mirrors I used up the last of my energy, which gave me the overtaking on Vargapeter in the sprint and this sweaty 35th. Compared to our previous race I only lost “50 but my legs are in 🔥

    • Neil Rushby says:

I never see you in races anymore!! one of my goals this year is to at least have you panic when you see me in your mirrors!!! take care and thanks for the comments.

I *was* intending to take it easy! Especially as still feeling the effects from Saturday. But as folk are beginning to know about me, I talk, but, well, it doesn’t happen. Did what I thought was an “easy” start, and was a bit stunned to see I was just outside the top ten when I looked up. Heck, Karel was on my nearby list for cripes sake! But the first climb settled things down and I ended up riding with folk like Groenen, uffzynda, Troyano1978, and Loki1972. It was a fast pace, but not too uncomfortable over the hill, down the long decline, and across the valley. Approaching the last climb, denny44 was with us and I thought he’d blow us away as he’s such a strong climber. I was watching uffzynda too. But it was Groenen who set the pace at the start of the climb. Guthinger-Mike caught us shortly and pulled ahead, taking me with him a bit. We slowly separated on the climb, Mike drifting ahead of me, and me ahead of Groenen. Towards the top, maybe a km to go, tomlereiger came by having an awesome climb, I couldn’t stick with him at all. In hindsight, I’m pretty happy with that climb. It’s almost 4 km at an average grade of over 11%, so it’s tough, but I was able to hold 3.5 W/kg most of the way. Standing in the 16 and 18 (and 21!)% ramps worked well too. Bodes well for 2024, I hope! Kudos to all who completed this route, especially if you also rode Saturday. Maybe we should tell Neil to stop being so ambitious? Nah . . .

    • Neil Rushby says:

😂 I am very ambitious on paper….. but I’m sure the last climb on this route was harder than the last climb on Saturday!!! I’m so happy this wasn’t a championship race as well. well done and looking forward to what you say your going to do on the next race then totally ignore it….. 😘

  6. Mads Grosen says:

It’s thought provoking and interesting how you set a goal for a race and then the next very moment makes a radical decision. It Seems like a few others had the same experience. Thanks to StefanSchmidt I went from doing hr zone4 to having a blast with him. (Just need to mention there were no fun on the last climb🥵) Interesting to see if I’ve got the juice on Thursdays race with a pb ftp on yesterdays ride
See you all Thursday with or without diamond legs😉

First race in the new year – didnt go to plan 🤣

December was high in volume, high in intensity and finished off with a hard effort on the Mt. Ventoux Circle route. So first week of January I wanted to be more relaxed in order to soak up that Dec. TSS…
Anyways – in my part of the world we have had quite a snow fall since New Years so I I have spent a few hrs shuffling snow and today was no exception, before changing from shuffle to cleated shoes getting ready in the pain cave… Only to find out I was an hr early 😉 Ok, what to do – there was a Rouvy Race just about to start so I joined in on that, intending an easy pace and just accumulate time on the bike. Didnt quite manage to pace myself but had fun, and once that race was done I had 20mins to start of Muckers so spent 15min riding a downhill route before joining the start pen.
During Christmas I swapped out my chain and cassette but have since struggled with the front ring not liking it, if I do out of the saddle 4w/kg+ efforts the big ring slip the chain and it wall down onto the crank arm. Not ideal, but I have not stressed about it since I was going to take it easy anyways haha!!

Onto the race itself, I started out with a medium to high pace (way above intended, funny thing…) and managed to relax (or sufferend a mental bonk…) a little on the descent and on the flat section, simply in cruise mode. Final climb I put down some more power, chain slipped once but gained back a few slots that I lost in the middle section, finishing in 32nd place.

New crankset is ordered, will probably arrive/installed and ready to go for this Sunday race..🚲✨
So for Thursday I just will have to suffer, see you all then 😀

I spent some nice days in Strasbourg and ate alot of Sauerkraut, Würstel (Sausages) and chops. Just came home at 19:00 and thougt enough time for an easy Muckers race! Started slowly because I was not sure how my form was after the shorttrip. After the start found myself at place 40-50 with ca. 3W/kg. We were a nice pack of Muckers: Squalo, Chak, Silly, Svard, rouvy1, Andy, batbuilder and Loki 1972. We stayed together untill the end of the flat section. I was really fresh and well recovered so I decided to try to maintain 4W/kg on the last climb. The legs started to burn after the first steep section but then I saw denny44 on the list and I tried to catch him. After denny I saw Mike and Groenen 350m in front and that gave me the extra power to catch these two. Was very hard but I reached them before the downhill. felt very well the entire race: lessons learned; its all about recovery !
