MUCKERS AND KARNELS MASSIVE END OF YEAR CHALLENGE 30/12/23

FINAL RACE IN THE MUCKERS 13 RACE DECEMBER CHAMPIONSHIP

ROUVY Route Used: Mt. Ventoux circle | 82 miles | 11702ft climbing!!!!!

99 Registered | 53 starters | 30 finishers | 23 DNF | 45 DNS

What to do?? what to do?? Is this really a normal race with a normal race report?? My cycling heart says all 53 that were on the start line deserve a mention for even being there to have a go. But I just don’t have that time. My “rules is rules” side of me is just saying top 20 with the usual rules and regs applied….. I’m seriously torn and even now not 100% sure what to do.

so maybe First a quick mention to the 23 that DNF’d. Thank you for being on the start line and setting off with us all. Maybe you had a pre determined distance in mind or a set time, but having a big crowd really keeps everyone going. Weirdly as well, as you go further into these rides, and you are ready to give up, there’s something about having to at least catch and pass that rider who’s quit about 2 miles up the road! It’s like an extra bit of motivation, as you pass that rider, and then there’s another one!!! “I’ll get past that rider then quit!!” but then you are near the end so you feel you are too far in now to quit 😉 Some even stopped on the very last climb which really spurred the rest on to catch and pass!. Anyway, thank you!

Out of the 53 starters, 24 of todays riders hadn’t competed in any other of the Muckers December races, which also kinda shows how it was a one off event for those who just like to attempt BIG rides! So can we just say props to all you guys in the top 30 places! Just imagine I’ve re-typed your names out here: “enter name” as you all deserve it!

Final championship standings are just below the Race Results. Thank you everyone and we look forward to reading your comments!

FINAL DECEMBER CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE

Well done to “karel_sousek” who turned up for all 13 races and averages better that 4th place every race! absolutely superb effort and well deserved win! “Stefan_Smit” and “lrollin” have been battling all the way for 2nd and 3rd and its the German rider who just finishes 5 points in front of the French rider! It really has been great watching this fight and i hope you guys enjoyed the battle as well.

4th, 5th and 6th completed all 13 races as well and with “RocketRoy” averaging just better than 10th every race, “boogybill70” averaging just better than 17th and top placed Muckers Worldwide Rider “Andy_UP” averaging just better than 28th place in all 13 races.

“El_Tractor” and “SwissChris69” just missed the 1 race each, with the last 2 places in the top 10 “s.cata” and “HalAir” missing just 2 of the 13 races but strong rides from both meaning they get in this December championship top 10!

thanks to all 391 of you who were on the start line for at least 1 race, and the table below shows everyone who was on the start line for 2 or more! Hope you enjoyed it and above all else, kept you on the bike during December!

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

11th in the championship after 13 races and I missed just the 1. What an epic last race as well which turned into a must finish once “stetopps” quit as he was just in front of me in the championship and If i quit as well (meaning we get the same points!) , he would finish in front of me!! so nearly 7 hours on the bike and i retain 11th, due to “HalAir” leapfrogging the both of us but so glad i finished this!! really thought i might catch “skripnit” in this race but he was just too strong!!! well done

12th in the championship, and not at all expected The aim was to start and finish all races. Mt Ventoux race 4 was scuppered by having a COVID-19 Vaccine booked for 9 am. I started the race and then stopped to get the vaccine got back on but soon decided this may not be a good idea and stopped. I have all the races mapped out for January so I’ll be watching you all from behind nothing new there. Happy New Year Neil and you Muckers

    • Manuel Lamber says:

Congratulations to everyone for this intense month of December, well done for a crazy challenge.
I just wanted to ask why today’s DNF collected points, while it doesn’t seem to have happened in previous races. More than anything because when it happened to me due to internet problems and Rouvy not letting me return on 19.12 I didn’t collect anything.
      Happy New Year

      • Manuel Lamber says:

sorry, I had looked several times but I hadn’t seen the writing of the points assigned to the DNF, I saw that there was also 19.12. Thank you

  2. Andy_UP says:

Happy with my 6th in the championship. There was no way to finish higher for me. Thanks for organising and keeping score, that’s a lot work. I need a rest now… 😉

The last race was too tough for me. I had hypoglycemia in the final kilometers, and I finished in total suffering. I won’t be tackling the Ventoux on Rouvy again so soon.
Congratulations to Karel_Sousek, completely out of reach, and to Stefan Smit, very consistent and impressive competitor. December was tiring and quite stressful; I’m considering taking a break from Muckers races for January.
    Happy New Year to everyone!

  4. HalAir says:

I was quite apprehensive about this one, big distance and lot of climbing – but have done similar things before and know I am good for the duration, question is at what power⚡️

December have been filled with Muckers Races and Challenge routes on Rouvy, plus I signed up for the Rapha500 and consequently also Rouvy Festive 500, which Ventoux Circle was not part of….so December would be huge for me in terms of volume… Prior to this race I had completed 8 of the 9 Rouvy Festive500 rides, “saving” the last one for after Ventoux.. So the 36hrs I had of rest prior I carbed up, hard a good night of sleep and prepared a hefty “carb package” for this monumental ride, including plenty of drink!

I did a short “warm-up” on a downhill route prior to race start (only to set me up for a 1500km December month) and joined the start pen, ignorant of the suffering which was awaiting us.
Since my estimated duration for this ride was 5hr20mins I knew pacing would be key, so focused on a steady and manageable pace from the get-go. Once the groups settled in I found myself in 20th place or so, just doing my thing.. I was having some gearing issues as my front big ring is worn and getting out of the saddle, putting down more than 4w/kg would throw it off, which it did several times during the first 10k 🫠. I did consider swapping out to a different crankset prior to the race but chose not to, and regretted that now…
Anyways, managed to minimize the issue by being aware and “gentle” but I did loose my group, the two danes Grochang (?) and Niels (?) which had paired up and was chugging along. Off they went and I returned to my own pace, riding most of the time solo. My average power up the first ascent was 3,2w and the danes were more than 1km ahead of me, and I was in 23rd position on the crest.

On the “downhill” part of the route, middle section leading into the final and main climb, I focused on maintaining good power, hoping I could gain some ground. I pushed a little extra on the down and pushed harder on the smaller climbs, seeing distance to those ahead kept getting less and less 🤗.
During this time I passed a few that seemed to have stopped, so found myself in 19th place (IIRC) at the bottom of the final climb. I then caught up with the danes and started chasing BoogieBill which was now within striking distance, but my legs were starting to feel it now as cramps in calfs and quads were knocking on the door. Power up ahead seemed to be fading a little so I strives to constantly stay above that power level and hope the climb would give me enough time to pass a couple more… Patience did pay off, got past BoogieBill and now I had Stefan Smit up ahead, but he was still several hundred meters in front. Again I tried to stay above his power level, and distance did decrease but I think he just controlled it for the remainder of the climb. This climb is a killer, never have a single km felt longer than today, on this ride… so the 3-400m he had on me was never really challenged, but I had hopes and he did serve as a huge motivation for me to keep the pace up, all the way to the finish line. Boy was I happy when I rolled over the final crest and over the finish line, securing me 16th place. I probably spent another 5mins on the bike, before I pryed my torn body off from it, getting the sweat-soaked cycling kit off me… Some meager attempts to stretch my limbs where attempted, before treating myself with a nice warm bath. Oh the bliss 😀

An hr after the race, body still in shambles I ate a proper post-ride meal, and went direct to bed for the nite 💨
6:20am I was awake, entered Rouvy for my final Festive500 route, I was so not feeling for it 🤣
But got it done, 1hr20min at Z2 and did a 25km downhill route after that to get me past 1500km for December, Mission success 😀

December became my biggest month of the year, with the Muckers races and Rouvy Challenges, and not sure I am glad I jumped in on the Festive aswell, but it do feel extremely satisfying to have finished them all 🥳
    Rapha Festive 500 – Did 708km
    Rouvy Festive 500 – Did 504km
    December overall – Did 1504km
11 races in Muckers December Championship, earning me the 10th position

First week of January will be entirely low zone work, so my body can soak up the training stress! 🤣
Thanks for the the races, hosting and arranging, the engagement from the Muckers community, wish you all a happy new year 💥

  5. Mads Grosen says:

I must say after experiencing a lot of long distance rides – one of my previous ride was just over 400km and over 11 hours – this ONE was the hardest I have ever experienced! After climbing the first loooong mountain, I kept scowling to the right side of the screen having the thought, that I had to save energy to the last climb. So after 50 km I had to let Boogybill and Nielsbrynnum go. I was left in no man’s land on a 22th place, but riders were falling of the race and at the start of Mt. Ventoux I had passed 2 riders and a top 20 position was secured, at least I thought so! I never saw MikeHagen as a threat coming from behind with over 1.5km to catch me. The lead seemed just much bigger before the foot of Mt. Ventoux with a lead well over 5 km, but descent can sometimes fool you🙈 MikeHagen was pulling in on me and I could see my top 20 position flying away. Then some other rider stopped pedalling halfway through Mt.V. and my top 20 position was secured.
7.5 km to go I sadly had to pass my Danish fellow Nielsbrynnum with cramps on both legs – kudos for his effort💪 At only 2 km to the top of Mt.V. MikeHagen had only 30 meters to catch me. I really don’t know what happened, but I found an extra gear to hold my 18th position. Thanks for the fight MikeHagen you pulled something out of me I didn’t knew I had.
Kudos to everybody who participated on this event and kudos to you two guys creating all this events in your free time🙏 Happy New Year and see you all next year🎉- you have made my training to another level🙏

  6. Nigel (Alladin Sane) says:

Hey Muckers, that was a journey of self discovery! As a newish cyclist I am pleased with myself for keeping going and finishing and I absolutely agree with Neil about having dnf’ers up the road as targets (especially a couple 10km from the finish by which point I was too far in to quit).
Some great performances.. Well done and happy New Year to all.. I hope to join you again in 2024.
PS. My endurance is alright (ultra running helps) but my power output is very low.. happy to hear anyones thoughts on the type of training required to move it up a few watts.

  7. Karel Sousek says:

Race of the year with the most challenging AR route you can find on Rouvy. Thanks to Muckers promotion we had much more racers than last year. With that race started with high pace, like it could be done in one hour. Leading group established soon with 7 riders. Few drafting issues with Alan / Brian, but over time is mostly worked. Then i remember that first two hours were just like other Rouvy races, full effort most of the time, which was crazy but i liked it!

I lost contact with Alan / Hans in second long climb, but then we got back with great help of Brian. Here i struggled the most with temporary crisis, as Brian was pushing a bit more than i could handle. Then we rejoined into leading group of four in long descent. Gilmad was there too but had few times app issues and we lost him later on.

Flat section and Alan had some nasty issues as his avatar was jumping back and forth for 20 minutes or so, until he appeared 100m ahead of us and his lead was growing. Bruce caught us by incredible solo ride on basic frame and with one more surge by great ride of Hans Peter, the first three guys were gone. I continued with Brian, who finally slowed down a bit, so i could ride in front for a while. I could jump for a quick toilet in descent too.

Final climb to Mt. Ventoux comes, i took Red Bull as last energy burst. Brian with 30-80m lead, Mike Gavelis and lrollin quite behind, but not that far and if you would collapse completely, you would pay high price. Half of the climb i just kept same distance from Brian. Then i caught him and quickly gained 100m lead and growing.

Podium was far away, so i focused to hold on 4th potato place. It was very tough, seeing Alan finishing 3km ahead with route record time and knowing i will ride another ~15 min. One small crisis again, but then the finish line was nearby and i got there just under 4:20. It is great improvement from last year by ~7min, thanks to new aero frames, as by quick look to last year effort i produced exactly same avg watts (256 vs 255) with 3,8 wkg. With that im very happy, it is really the most exciting and demanding race you can experience on Rouvy and everyone who can finish it, will learn a lot about yourself. Thank you everyone!

  8. Mike Hagen says:

Up at the ungodly hour of 5:00 a.m. to be ready for the start which was at 6:30 a.m. on the west coast of North America. But I wasn’t going to miss it! Many kudos (and more than kudos) to Neil and Kyle for creating and organizing Muckers races and the whole MWW experience. It’s really great to get out for rides with so many friends. Always knew this one would be tough. It turned out to be brutal. Relatively easy start and ended up in a group full of familiar names, but the pace was just a little too hot to hold for five hours. Let go and rode with Lee (Berty-Bassett6) for a while. We caught up to Alex79WestFR after an hour then Lee upped the pace and took Alex with him; again, just a little too hot for me to hold for four more hours! That last 20 km climb (though I was trying not to think about it) was still there. Solo ride settled in at 26th place, but was moving up by passing foot-down avatars; clearly a lot of folk were glitching or withdrawing due to time pressure or other reasons. I began to think I had a shot at top 20. At Malaucene, started on my first can of Coke, and set off after those ahead; trying to hold 3 to 3.3 W/kg, just a little more than they were. It was so hard. I could see that nielsbrynnum was struggling (I could feel for him–he withdrew with just 7 km to go); I passed a couple other stopped riders; but Grochang was the man in my sights. Halfway up he was 800 m ahead, then 600! then 800 again (groan), then 400! Trying to hold 3+ W/kg, just a few tenths more than him. It was so hard. Finally, about 2 km to go, went around a corner and there he was, about 70 m up. Got to within 40 m, then he seemed to find another gear, and I had nothing left to respond with. I was shattered and shaking. Behind me, szwejk was safely a few hundred meters back, so I just survived the last bit, happy with my 19th placing. It was *so* hard. See you all in January!

What a massive challenge 🥵 it was insanely hard ! On the last part of the first climb I was in a small group with Boogybill70 💪🏻💪🏻 and Groenen 💪🏻💪🏻, we worked well together on the first climb, the downhill section and the first part of the last climb. From the beginning of the last climbs I felt my legs started to cramp and I had to let Boogybill70 and Groenen go. I tried to find a pace keeping the cramps in control. With 10 km I caught Groenen who also seemed to be struggling. At that point I looked at the remaining km, I was almost shouting at my legs to keep going but with 7.8 km left I had to throw the towel in the ring 🥊 I got knockout by MT Ventoux . I was really pleased to see my fellow strong Muckers Grochang and MikeHagen passing me before I logged off 💪🏻💪🏻 Well done to all participants and see you all in 2024
