MUCKERS Vietnam Race 3 of 6. 15/06/23

Rouvy Route Used : Ha Giang downhill | Vietnam | 9.32 miles 908 ft climbing

Route 3 from the Vietnam challenge and also the 3rd race in my Vietnam 6 race championship

27 Registered | 23 finishers | 0 DNF | 4 DNS

2 “short” races tonight to help get 2 different challenges completed. 1st one, and the main one, is this strange little route from the Vietnam challenge. a hill climb first part, quite a long downhill section ( probably where it gets its name from), another hill climb, small downhill, into a long gradual climb. tough to get into any real rhythm but 23 of us wanted to give this one a go and see if we could do well.

Looks like we had a proper battle for top 3 placings with “hinsbergen” getting the Gold marginally in front of “71_GURE_edu59” who’s been gone a while so was good to see to him back! “Tuden” followed them both home just 2 seconds later to claim a very respectable 3rd place.

4th & 5th came another 2 really strong riders with “karel_sousek” finishing 14 seconds in front of “adampel” in 5th, with “nielsbrynnum” coming home in a very respectable 6th place.

Next a trio of Muckers Worldwide riders with our little pocket rocket “Andy_UP” leading home “MikeHagen” then “DonJulio” in a strong 9th place.

Last mention? the rider who finished ahead of 4 Muckers Worldwide riders that’s who! And its the regular Canadian rider “rouvy1bryon” who loves to get in the mix and fight for that top 10! Well done.

First time in a long time we had 0 DNFs today but it was a short one, even if it was a weird one! Well done to all who finished and please scroll down to see how the leaderboard is looking if you are interested in the Championship.

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

Man that was tough! thought i could stay with rouvy1bryon on the first hill, but that didn’t happen, then thought i could stay with S.Ludford on the 2nd and that didn’t pan out either! ended up in a battle for 14th place with sqaulo and it was a really good battle! Just got him at the end but was near to 250watts average for the whole route and that was with quite a bit of coasting on the long downhill section. still kept 5th place in the championship but I have a lot of faster riders on my tail so this will be near on impossible to keep. but i’ll keep trying. cheers everyone.

When you expect a slow night you end up having a quick one, typical. My left knee was sore from an outside ride on Tuesday so I decided to start slowly and increase the power only if it felt comfortable. The warm up felt good, I started at the back and kept a steady pace up the first climb then managed to use the long fast descent to catch up with ‘Mucker1974’ hoping we could work to keep ahead of ‘Squalo_delle_Alpi’ who was approaching fast. Mucker was going deep but dropped off the wheel as Squalo got to us so I kicked hard and pushed onwards and ended up collecting teammates ‘kin_kwan’ and ‘Ryanio-Bianchi’ wondering if we had enough strength as a team to steal 10th place and get a another mention for a Mucker. ‘rouvy1bryon’ was strong enough to easily hold us at bay so we rolled over the line mention-less. Enjoyed this race, it was good to keep on top of my heart rate rather than join the ‘sufferfest’ trying to catch the early leaders draft – but there are times when you have to do this also.

    • Neil Rushby says:

the kick was impressive Mucker! kinda new you might do that once Squalo caught us, i’d have done the same in your shoes. Is mention-less a real word! should be 😂

  3. Manuel Lamber says:

nice race guys, my legs were a bit heavy but I wanted to make a good impression. To tell the truth after the first ascents I was already suffering, but with constant work I approached the duo Neil and Steven. In the end a great duel again with Neil, he is stronger than me today and the 14th eluded me by just 3 seconds. Great race, thank you all 💪

    • Neil Rushby says:

i was glad you didn’t catch and just disappear! you did a lot more of the leg work when we rode together and maybe this is why i was stronger when those little kicker hills came up and I’d pull out a lead. left my biggest pull for the end and went all in to keep the gap. it was great racing against you Manuel!

  4. Mike Hagen says:

Gotta commend you, Neil, and the Muckers generally, in organizing these Muckers races, especially the way you’re doing race series for points.  It’s really engaging.  And even though I’m in no shape for racing today (I did a 1000 km brevet over the weekend) I didn’t want to miss it, really wanted to hold my position in the series standings.  Riding with DonJulio and kin_kwan halfway through, Andy_UP, nielsbrynnum, and isaaclopez_Gure just ahead, I could not get out of Zone 3 HR, or do any kind of VOmax threshold power, but that was okay.  Eased ahead of DonJulio, kin_kawn  dropped back, Issaclopez suffered a Rouvy glitch, rouvy1byron made a move, but wasn’t going to threaten me; so 8th, and very pleased with that.

    • Neil Rushby says:

Thanks Mike, it really does add a little bit more excitement and pressure to the races when i create a race series. Very impressive you can still do so well even at heart rate zone 3! were you an ex-pro back in the day and you’ve not let us know?? Anyway, 8th shows you are at least human, and just watch out for Andy as he’s not too many points behind you now! cheers for the comments!

  5. Ryan says:

Was a great ride, had good position on first climb but couldnt chase down rouvy1bryon. Steve Ludford and Kwan caught and passed me after the second climb and tried to latch on , but I was able to respond to help them. I managed to regain some good pace and power on the last climb and manage to catch Kwan with Steve ludford abiut 30metres up the road. Thanks to these two for ensuring I keep strong to the end. Some good points for myself for the series. Nice route and good ride . Well done to all for making the race good and to Neil for setting up.

  6. Andy_UP says:

Short route, most difficult part at the start so no reason to hold back. I did follow a rider I normally can’t follow for long, and it was Nielsbrynnum. Once the flatter section began, he didn’t like me (suffering) on his wheel anymore. I am happy I could respond a few times when he attacked, as I wanted to create a big enough gap to the chaser Mike Hagen. He is standing 2nd in the championship, 10 point before me, and I never managed to finish before him. This was the day I did and so the gap is down to 8 points, with 3 races to go, he will have to watch his rear mirror!

  7. Henrik Jørgensen says:

On paper, a not too long route and with a relatively long descent after the climb to recover on, and then full throttle to the line. But that did not happen. It went completely sideways, and exploded in one of the toughest races I’ve driven in a long time. I ran the route with an average of 347 watts!! Completely crazy when there is a descent where not so many watts were made. Crazy😵 and it’s also way beyond what I normally do. But no one was going to give up, and hats off to Hinsenberg for having the strength to sprint at the end, because I was DONE. Had to lie down on the tile floor after the race to cool down. But it was a great race🏁 and I hope this is not the standard for future races😂 because it ends with someone having a heart attack😂😂

    • Neil Rushby says:

lol, nice to see you putting the effort in Tuden!! Maybe think more strategic now and just watch for Mike an Andy who are your closest rivals? or do you just have to win!! I think you do! lol. Well done on the result and that amazing average power!

  8. Michael says:

Ha Giang DOWNHILL (!!!) – Well, I had something different in mind when I read the title. But it is a beautiful route, at least for someone who weighs 65 kilos and is in top shape, but honestly, not for me 😮 . Upto12% gradient right at the beginning. I was already exhausted before it even started. My legs just didn’t want to cooperate today, so it was a matter of surviving, somehow reaching the finish line, and scoring a few points for the championship.

At the start, I managed to ride alongside “Paulo_Tann” for a while. But then he pulled ahead. I ended up riding the last stretch with “maurybos.” Thanks to both of them. I don’t know if I would have made it on my own. It was just one of those bad days, but it happens. Next thursday, I will attack! (well, not the top riders, just the guys I usually compete with 😉 )
    see you….

    • Neil Rushby says:

please don’t attack! i quite like my 5th place overall yet i have a lot of faster riders (you being one of them) just behind me! Well done for finishing as we have all had those races where the legs just won’t work! you’ll be back strong for the next one! thanks for commenting
