Giro Carnage, The Hell of the West, and Monster Torque

Giro Carnage, The Hell of the West, and Monster Torque

The first Grand Tour of the year has officially arrived, and it brought absolute chaos with it. Whether you spent your weekend dodging the rain on the local roads or putting in the hard miles on Rouvy for the May Championship, the professional peloton was serving up plenty of drama to keep us entertained.

Here is your weekly breakdown of the news that matters to the Muckers Worldwide family.

1. Survival and History at the Giro

The 2026 Giro d’Italia opted for a Grande Partenza in Bulgaria, and it quickly turned into a demolition derby. A massive pile-up on Stage 1 completely blocked the road, leaving just a handful of riders to sprint for the line. Stage 2 was equally brutal, with heavy rain contributing to crashes that forced several big names, including Adam Yates, to abandon the race entirely.

But out of the chaos came a brilliant moment of history. 24-year-old Thomas Silva launched a perfectly timed attack to win Stage 2, becoming the first rider from Uruguay to ever win a Grand Tour stage and pull on the iconic pink jersey. For the Muckers, it is a stark reminder that racing isn’t just about raw power; it is about staying upright, holding your position, and having the sheer grit to attack when everyone else is suffering.

2. Mud, Sweat, and the Ribines

If you think the virtual gravel sectors are tough, spare a thought for the riders at yesterday’s Tro-Bro Léon in France. Known affectionately as the “Hell of the West,” the race forces riders over 34 kilometres of unpaved, jagged farm tracks called ribines.

Filippo Fiorelli took a massive victory in a race where simply avoiding a puncture is an achievement. It’s the perfect inspiration for our Muckers who love taking their bikes off the beaten path. Road cycling is great, but sometimes getting a little mud on the frame is exactly what the soul needs.

3. The 120Nm E-Bike Arms Race

The technology pushing e-bikes forward continues to blur the lines of what is possible on two wheels. Bosch has just rolled out a major software update for their smart systems, unlocking a ridiculous 120Nm of torque and up to 600% motor support. The system is designed to provide massive, immediate power on technical uphills, even at incredibly low cadences.

Whether you are an e-bike convert or a traditionalist, the sheer power these motors are now putting out is mind-boggling. You might want to double-check who you’re trying to drop on the next local club climb!

Mucker’s Takeaway: Stay alert in the bunch, embrace the grit of the rough roads, and keep pushing those pedals. See you on the start line for the next race!

Kyle Goodram

Kyle is a digital writer for MuckersWorldwide.com I've been out riding all over Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire for the last 12 years. It is mainly to keep fit as I love food and would be 16st if I didn't ride my bike at least 3 times a week. This leads me to Muckers Worldwide, as when the weather is un-rideable (fair weather cyclist) I move indoors to cycle on Rouvy. We have a large group of races that we race throughout winter in the UK. Hope you come and join us on a Tuesday & Thursday title of the races are "Muckers". Thanks, Kyle
