MUCKERS REVISED SUNDAY HILL CLIMB BLOG.

Hi and welcome to the blog for the Muckers Sunday Hill Climb.

A Championship based just on the elevation total for the ride you completed! Completing the ride is very very important. If you don’t cross that finish line, you get 0.

We really try our best to schedule in just challenge routes, so those that are over 3000 feet get in straight away, those that are just too long for a week day race get in as well and sometimes, we have to double up some so we can fit them in before the challenge ends. If i create them at the same time, i will add 1 of 2 and 2 of 2 etc etc into the title. If though i have already set one up in advance, then ROUVY sneak another challenge in that i then have to double up a Sunday to fit them in, that extra one gets called a “bonus” ride. It’s not ideal, but its all because ROUVY won’t always let me in to change the race title, especially if its been scheduled for a while and they’ve made it an official race. So as much as it sounds easy to just pop in and edit that climbs title to 1 of 2, the system won’t let me…. how’s that for a peak behind the curtain.😏.. Obviously if this changes in the future, i will start to edit that original one as a 1 of 2 climb title as that always reminds you its a double header

We have 2 time slots, ones called “AM” for the early ones, and ones called “PM” for the later ones. You have to ride the official Muckers created events to be included. If it’s a double header you are more than welcome to ride one in the morning, and the other in the afternoon. Just try not to accidentally do the same one twice as you will only get the elevation for one!

The GC will be updated here as often as we can so you get to see the most up to date GC leaderboard. Now NITEOR has gone, we recognize that the original 4 week update to this blog wasn’t fit for purpose anymore as you need a place to see the GC now rather than a 4 week old update that we originally had in mind.

So no long winded 4 week update, just the stats and the full GC updated as soon and as often as we can. (we have left the original 2 months reports at the bottom of the blog for nostalgic purposes, but we will keep the current GC here at the top!)

Any questions pop them into the comments and we will get back to you.

GC: out of 1057 riders (up 15 from last week) after 37 climbs

Nice rolling route this week saw a good numbers turn up for both start times with 58 riders getting a healthy 3176ft/points on the board. Even the prospect of nearly 30 miles as well didn’t put these lot off, but it was a really good route and a change from a straight up slog…. but they are returning very soon!!!!

Top 9 all showed up again, but 10th didn’t (again) so the top 9 have now got quite a nice buffer of about 12,000ft/points but surely this top 9 must be a few weeks away from Summer Holiday time??

6 riders (was 5) have now broken past the 100,000ft marker as well.

15 new riders joined in and they all slotted into 548th place which is a nice place to start with just one climb. Onwards and upwards as we say!

GC shows all the riders who have climbed over 7500ft all in. That’s 176 of you (was 170 last week!). Once this number of riders hits 200, then we will re-do the cut off at 10,000ft.

* Bike symbol shows the riders who’s elevation went up this week

TOP 50 PLACINGS AFTER 10 CLIMBS:

(407 different riders completed at least one climb, 114 have done 2 or more)

Well, things are a lot different than they were 5 climbs ago!! We were doing quite nicely then Boom! No More NITEOR. At first i honestly felt this was probably the only championship I’d be able to carry on with as in my head this one was going to be the “easiest” to keep tabs on, even if i had to revert to pen and paper again. But so many people offered to help the Muckers carry on which was overwhelming, but when Ste Ludford said “let me have a look at it” he looked and he looked deep! So he’s sorted me out a Spread sheet for this championship that he let me loose on last night and amazingly i managed to not break the internet and even compiled the GC correctly (Ste was running his own copy in the background just in case i messed it all up… wise man)

So here’s the top 50 after 10 climbs. I am also aware that you guys will need to check here for the GC now instead of the NITEOR site so once i am a bit faster with all the new spreadsheets as i try to keep all the championships going, i will try to update more often than every 5 climbs, but please just give me some time to get more familiar and confident with it all, and hopefully i can then start to update more regularly

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

joint first after the first 5. Roques de García absolutely hurt though and climb 4 i was full of a cold, but i still managed to do them all so lets see how long it lasts. Luckily its still cold and wet here in Bolton so won’t be going out in the real world for a while…..

  2. Tomáš Hloušek says:

I was happy that I missed the 4th, because I went to ski to Alps. Opposite last year when I had to change skiing for beiing at work halv day before departure. I was said that I missed the 5th, because my trainer gone to hell/heaven on Saturday. No chance to buy new one on Sunday. From Monday I have new one. So this year I’ll be tha chaser. It will be fun to watch how high I can get. Looking forward to next 5 weeks.

  3. Mike Hagen says:

Had to check my Strava to remember what happened last Sunday. Oh, right, fast start then bonked. But that’s the beauty of an elevation GC! Position doesn’t matter, just have to finish. It’s actually quite freeing. I like it.

  4. Stefano Magrini says:

what happens now that niteor is offline? I see that races continue to be set, but what about the leaderboards?

  5. Bart Cuppen says:

this is my favorite ride of the week, setting off on these long long climbs, riding in small groups steadily up the slope and encouraging each other with the occasional thumbs up.

I hope the manual GC doesn’t take too much time to update every race, less frequent posts are okay for me (as it is not about GC), and maybe other solutions will come along in the future.

    • Neil Rushby says:

cheers Bart. This is also my favorite ride of the week as it really feels like you’ve achieved something a bit more difficult/special. Really love the thumbs up we all give each other as we get going, its like everyones saying “good luck!” isn’t it. Also you can keep track of your own score on this by just adding up the elevation yourself as that’s the only “points” you’ll get no matter how fast or slow you rode it.

Keep an eye out for the double headers as sometimes the challenge routes don’t always have over 3000ft per ride so sometimes i will add some together to get to a combined goal. I will always try to fit all the current challenge routes into our Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday races, which then means we throw a few together on Sundays to help that goal as well.

  6. paul bernstein says:

I went out and did 2++ hours on the gravel bike with a nearby teammate/friend. And then we went for coffee. Missed suffering with you all, but it will probably rain on some Sunday in the near future. See you then. cheers

    • Neil Rushby says:

exactly how those of you who love to get outdoors should view these rides! We have them set up just in case you don’t get out! Have a great year Paul!

  7. Mike Hagen says:

It’s an unexpected sunny Sunday here on the wet coast of Canada and I rode the climbs. Are you saying I have my priorities wrong???

    • paul bernstein says:

No, I live on the same coast..did 2++ hours of gravel outside on Saturday (where there was a nice sucker hole and the bikes did not need to be cleaned afterwards), and then did the Sunday rides…just not as fast as you did.

  8. Klinthomie says:

Wish I could join you guys more on these rides, but having two small kids, weekends are usually reserved for family time.

  9. Mike Hagen says:

The Ides of March, or the day after Pi Day, if you prefer, and only three left at the top of the board? Wow.

  10. paul bernstein says:

I have gained an appreciation for being able to join this activity late, and still record max points. Due to stuff, I started 17 full minutes late. Along the way I achieved 3.5 w/kg in a nice controlled ascent, and 1:55:45 total .
on the bike time, which was right up there with other Muckers..and the final result, exactly the same total meters climbed as everyone else.. .and a special thumbs up appreciative gesture for Neil who gave us an event with no downhill….cheers

    • Neil Rushby says:

hey Pablo, thanks for the feedback. Yes it’s one of those hidden advantages of arranging an event based solely on elevation, and also for our other unique event, the w/kg event, means that if you are running late, you don’t get penalized. I think you can be up to 29 minutes late to a “race” but i’m too scared to test it, and as we all know, ROUVY can change these things with any update at any given moment so don’t ever take it for granted that its a certain time lol

And yeah, it’s been a bit up and down recently hasn’t it, we must be due a proper climbing challenge soon??? but i just felt it was time for a proper climb, especially as its only 6 weeks away for this years real world Muckers get together. This year we are going to Italy, and hopefully we , depending on weather, will be climbing the stelvio!! God help me! lol

  11. Paul Bernstein says:

Neil, if you are going to send us up places like Mt Etna ( but disguise it with a different route name) you really need to leave some oxygen bottles at the top. I had no intention of doing anything so hard, but 6000′ of climbing score addition was irresistible. Thanks as always…cheers
