TO FINISH OFF:
58 riders competed in the main race tonight. With the continued European heatwave and unseasonable temperatures for many this is a fantastic turnout, we thank you all and rest assured, we are all crazy together.
Neil is now away on holiday so we have waited until he cleared customs and passed through post Brexit fingerprint control to check riders heart rate data has been provided before we could finish the blog. My first time on the business side of the blog for a few years so please let us know in the comments below if something looks amiss. Although, if you think your result was lower than you expected, that was probably the fault of your legs rather than my admin skills.
As always, please comment below on how the race was for you. All comments are read, appreciated and give an insight to the person behind the Avatar on screen.

So hot tonight. I already decided I needed to preserve life 😂 more than race and even though it was a flat profile to suit me I MUST NOT start in the fast group.
I found a really good group but I was honestly struggling to hang on to riders I should be able to work with and was a passenger. Once I felt top40 was secure I dropped off and soft pedalled home.
Maybe heat, maybe cumulative exhaustion, and maybe it’s a reminder to change power meter batteries. Not as enjoyable as normal weeks but I can take the rough with the smooth every now and then.
Hi Mr. Ludford and thanks for stepping into the breach while Neil is on vacation. We Americans still don’t quite grasp why so few of you across the pond embrace Air Conditioning. Of course most of the Southern US (including Virginia where I live) is pretty unbearable in July and August without it – just ask the original settlers of Jamestown VA (1607) led by Cpt John Smith of England what it’s like!
This is the first time it’s been hot since 1976 😂. Normally, summer is 2 days in July and maybe a day in August.
We toured the Southern States late last summer, you are correct, it was hot. I think Asheville NC was the closest we got to Virginia.
Love the heat! Close to 34 degrees in the shed tonight – glad the race was as short as it was, don’t think I could have held onto our group for much longer.
Rode the first half of this one earlier in the week to scout it out and 2 things were immediately apparent:
1. No way would I be with the front group after the 2nd hill near the beginning of the race.
2. The race would be made on that hill and then the other 3 minute rise about halfway through
So, simple plan: Don’t burn it up too hard on the kicker right at the start, but be far enough up to be able to draft as much as possible up the 2nd little climb and go as hard as possible to stick with “group 2″ over that.
After that, the plan was to stay tucked in and give it everything again to stay with ‘group 2” up the 3 minute rise at the halfway point.
I say all this because without this very clear plan I would have surely gone out too hard, gotten dropped and finished much lower. Instead, the plan worked to perfection! I barely hung on over the 2nd and 3rd rise, but it was great to draft behind Mike Hagen, WolliD, Klinthomie, RaTim, MatthiasHeil, MNHROUVY, and others. I’m not sure who all we picked up along the way (as I was hiding in the back) but by the end the group also included Thomas__DK, simonjp, and rouvy1bryon.
Rouvy1bryon – very tough competitor and only other 1 in my cat to make this group. If he every does all 4 events in a month he’s likely to win A6 and move up, but he missed the TT this month. Good thing, because he and almost all the rest easily outsprinted me at the end, but I finished quite happy and with what I think was my best every placing in a Mucker Race. Only “regrets” iare that
1) wish I was strong enough to have pulled some. There was another group of 4 ahead of us we might have caught with more cooperation.
2) In my next life I’ll have better legs and an ability to sprint at the end. There were 10 of us together by the end and i was next to last. Still I’ll wear the 21st placing proudly!
This is the second race in a row, where you and I finish next to each other. Luckily for me, this time I got to be on top, but I am sure it will not always be this way. It does seem like I have found a new racing partner in you, Eric. Cheers! Good job!
Also, regarding 1) I always want to pull more, I also think I have to be realistic and play the game a bit. For now I have to recognize that I am often in groups with people who are in better shape and have ridden for longer, so I have to draft a bit more and forget my pride. However, I do like chasing, especially with Matthias, but when I was the group in front was with laborg, I figured that we never stood a chance. He is very strong on the flats and can output a lot of watts.
I hear there is a heat wave in Europe and, my god, you guys were hot today. Lots of groups going hot and heavy; some serious watts being thrown around. I feel for folk like Tim_Hall and EddyDomino who did some massive power in earlier races but still finished down the leaderboard. Good job, guys! That was a fun one.
Sprinters stage with few bumps. Like always in these type of races the key is to stay vigilant to any group movements, because othewise you could lost draft easily. Despite not that hard tempo i started to feel kinda heavy legs, maybe aftermath of yesterday running incident. When we entered sprint finish, five A sprinters distanced our B group quickly, so six is decent result yet. Nice race, thank you all who joined us!
Not too hot in Denmark yesterday, at least I wasn’t too bothered by the heat.
I knew from the beginning there was no use in trying to keep up with the front group and while I was alone with Eric (UncleE) for a bit of the beginning, at some point we found a 10-man group with MatthiasHeil, Mike, Thomas, RaTim, Simon, MNHrouvy and more. Perfect group and everything gelled.
I had swallowed two full plates of pasta before riding and rested up the last two days, so this route wasn’t too hard for me. I actually felt great for the most of the ride and didn’t really notice if anybody was attacking? Not to sound arrogant, I mean, I wasn’t in any capacity to drop anybody or take serious leads, haha – but I felt good for once! Gotta acknowledge when that happens. I kept my eye on Mike on the kickers and tried not let Matthias’ get away over the tops and then save some energy for the sprint.
But the sprint was a big fat fail for me. Maybe I started too late? But I think that a finish on an incline like this with a group like the one I found myself in, I cannot expect more than the 7 / 9 that I got anyways.
Numero 18 in the championship so far?! I will take it! Very, very happy about that.
Thanks for a fun race everybody. I know flat routes are not for everybody, but my body type appreciates one every now and then.
Great race. I kind of got the feeling it was easier for you to stick with the group than I. Also, I think I owe you a big thanks because – if I recall correctly – it was you I was drafting behind to establish contact with the group we ended up with. Thank you and looking forward to see if I can keep up with you on the climb next week. Doubtful, but I’ll try!
Also this month something turn bad for me…. Infact for problem with the finish time of my work I arrived in delay for start the race. Very Very pity for me, this route could be for my characteristics but when I started I was 1 km away from the last rider.
For me starting a new TT race, a mix of angry and stressed, but I wanted to recover something for my moral.
At the end I did 3.2 w/kg agv and take the 44th. I hope to ride together the next 😇💪👋🦈
I’m glad you wasn’t REALLY angry, you nearly caught me
😂 it’s good your British humour 😇
It was no well don’t saw no friends in nearby list…. One unhappy Sharky last night 😘 Big S 🫡
That’s a real shame, because the route did play to your strength(s) and a good chance you could have stuck with the front group.
I’m from South Eastern Pennsylvania, it’s August so 90 degree weather is a given. My body does better in the heat than most people but given where I live. I have had heat exhaustion enough to know the symptoms. It’s not hard to do while running. It’s probably not very hard to do biking on a trainer (no air flow). Most of us push through some discomfort during a race. To me heat exhaustion feels the same as the discomfort of a HITT workout. Until you know what your limits are in the heat it’s important to remind yourself to limit your effort in the heat. In my mind the worst symptom is the fact that it takes your body a couple weeks minimum to recover. I guess what I’m saying is if you don’t have A/C and it’s hot, slow down a little and maybe let those of us with A/C go up the road. I’m just worried that you may not be able to recover for the next race. 😁😁😁
Just added ‘lack of Air Conditioning’ to my long list of performance excuses
Ok, so when Mr. Ludford is looking for a moderate-paced group then Sunniva has to join to him and take this opportunity to ride with strong support 🙂
My legs were very tired after the afternoon strength training session, so I split the route into few stages to survive with the group. Kilometer by kilometer, I was able to stay with the group, and we even caught some riders. I relied heavily on drafting, but I hope I also gave some power to the group as well. It was a good time and a good result. Thank you 🙂
but I said moderate 😂, not supersonic. You kept going to the front and I was praying you would stop. I knew very early that I was in trouble on this race .. well done on a really strong performance.
Yep! She was really pushing the group. It was moving! Not sure how I managed to stay in tell the end. 🚴
Since the heat is a topic I’m in the Central Valley of California. Summers are really hot. Just got through a 2 week run of 105-108 degrees. Fortunately I have A/C and my loft is at 82 degrees. Fans galore and still sweating like a pig. If you don’t have A/C please be careful. I know our egos can push us pretty far.
This was an interesting race for me. With all the speed bumps and little kickers I knew I wouldn’t be able to stick with the stronger riders but that didn’t stop me from pushing the start to see what happened. Ended up getting dropped pretty quick but found a good pack sunniva, S.Ludford, Stelviobound, among many others. The pace was strong and we caught, picked up, and dropped many on the way so I apologize if I can’t name them all because I was just focused on staying close to the front so I wouldn’t get dropped. I think there were about 6 of us closer to the finish and not too far behind a good size group in front. We were closing in but ran out of road. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough juice to get over that last kicker to really race to the line but, still came in much faster than I expected. We passed some strong riders which help motivate me to keep pushing. I would have loved to have bridged that last gap but, I was already maxing out my heart rate. My goal was to finish closed to 43 min but, came in at 0:39:04.4 with the help of all those I road with so thanks to all of you. All said and done i finished in 32 place which I think was my best points race to date. Feeling good!!
Great ride, that group was moving at a good speed collectively. I lost nearly 3 minutes after dropping out of the draft.
I live one hour from London which is generally the warmest part of the UK, unlike Neil and Kyle who live in the cold lands of the North 😉
