No Sponsor? No Problem. Cycling Runs on Its People
The Muckers Big Idea, Thursday 5 November 2026
It’s been a rough week for money in British cycling. Nopinz RT is closing its elite team after two seasons, a long-standing women’s Continental team has folded after 18 seasons for lack of funding, and the transfer pages are full of riders hunting for a new home. Grim reading, honestly.
And then there’s Draft Racing. The Bristol team lost its only financial backer and, rather than packing up, it’s growing: the men’s squad goes from six riders to 18 and the women’s side adds eight. How? According to The British Continental, founder Charlie Parry says the subs paid by the team’s 70 or so riders will cover its costs. No sponsor. Just people who want to race, chipping in.
The big idea: cycling doesn’t run on sponsors. It runs on its people.
Sponsors are lovely. Free kit is lovely. But sponsors come and go with the economy, and when they go, the teams built around a single cheque go with them. The clubs that last are the ones held together by riders who turn up, pay their subs, pump up the gazebo and shout at each other up the final climb.
That’s not a fallback plan. That’s how most of cycling has always worked, from your local Sunday club run to the chaingang that’s been leaving the same cafรฉ at 9am since before carbon was invented.
- Small money, lots of people, beats big money, one person. A tenner from seventy riders is sturdier than one backer who might change their mind in January.
- Ownership changes everything. When you’ve chipped in, it’s your team. You show up, you volunteer, you bring mates.
- Community is the real sponsor. The marshals, the mechanics, the person who brings flapjack. None of them are on the jersey, and all of them are why it works.
Why it matters for Muckers
Muckers has never had a big-name backer, and we’ve never needed one. What we’ve got is better: a peloton of riders from all over the world who turn up for the Tuesday races, cheer each other through the hill climbs and keep the group chat daft. That’s the engine. Everything else is just paint.
So here’s the challenge this week: give something small back to the people who keep your riding going. Thank the club run organiser, offer to marshal, drag a mate along to their first race, or simply turn up. Cycling needs more people chipping in, not more logos.
Over to you, Muckers. Who’s the unsung hero of your club? Let us know, and give them the credit they’re owed.
Ride with us on ROUVY: our weekly Muckers races and group rides run all winter on ROUVY, open to everyone and powered entirely by the people who show up. Join the Muckers club on ROUVY and grab a wheel.
