MUCKERS 2025 SEPTEMBER CHAMPIONSHIP RACE 3.
ROUTE AND RACE DETAILS:
Col de Tende | Italy | 22.62 miles | 2,792 ft. elevation
Yet another tough route for a championship race! Do you go for it for the first 3/4 on the slight incline and try to draft along till you bonk? or wait for the steeper last 1/4 and go for it then? what wheels are best? i suppose it depended on your tactics…
This profile really doesn’t attract loads of riders, but those that want/need championship points or also need to completed this route to help with the challenge will hopefully be here. So lets see what numbers we got tonight.
its 21:16 and i’m just watching the last rider on the “Later-on” race cross the line, so lets get on NITEOR and close this round down!
69 riders set a time before our rules which translates to 57 who stuck to them
lets go!

TO FINISH OFF:
4 non-ballast riders in the top 10 after race 3 might be a new record if it carries on next week for the last round! The top 3 finished in the same order in the race so they have gapped each other a tough so it really is danrockys to loose now!
We’ve raced 3 really tough races up to now, but next weeks is the Palm Beech route which has only 144ft over the whole 15.67 miles. Rocket start and draft as hard as you can to get some decent points next week as it’ll be over before you know it!
Thanks for racing with us, it really wouldn’t be the same without your commitment to the championship.
Thanks for reading the blog, and as per usual, thanks for reading right to the end.
Mucker1974

honestly couldn’t decide how to tackle this. do i go lightweight wheels for the end, 4 spokes for the first section, or somewhere in-between??? Actually popped in and out of the warm up to change set ups and finally went with the 800s. Set off over the little hump start out of the saddle just to see where i was on the downhill. i was around 45th and now i needed to stay below 3.0 to try and save some energy! got into a fantastic pack and i held on for as long as i could till we hit the steeper part where i just focused on trying to finish under 90mins.really felt i was on it up the last climb but about 4 riders came and passed me but i just stayed focused and just about managed my target time. That was really hard tonight but i’ve now gathered enough points to climb to 41st in the GC. happy with that and also top of my category due to a no-show from Squallo, but i beat everyone from my category tonight as well.
Tactics, Neil? Not much tactics in this race: just hang on with your group as long as possible as the grade gets steeper. You can talk about strategy: mine was rocket start, get with a fast group, then sit in and relax until the grade steepened and the group broke up. The only tactical decision I made was to go with the 4-spokes. But given my strategy, that was a no-brainer. I honestly feel the 4’s aero advantage compensates for the extra weight right up to 7% or so, and any speed over about 15 km/hr. I was with the second group after the start, but it was a strong group with the likes of DonMatteo_07, VeloBuch, and Thomas_Lyhne. We caught MatthiasHeil, he of rocket start fame, fairly early, but, to his credit, he stuck around for a while. We overhauled mates Chak, ludwigdb, and Andy_UP; I was on a roll. Into the last half, and the group broke up (we could see the group ahead was breaking up too). I was dropped by the top four in my group, but caught Stefan793, and then dropped him. That was a surprise. Stefan_Schmidt came by and gave me a draft for a short while. Into the last 2 km and now my 4s were not helping. How many chasers could I hold off? Not PalGravenm. Not Alex79WestFR. Not EddyDomino. Into the last few hundred meters and Yumile was closing! I was out of the saddle the last 200 m giving all, and it was enough. Stroked to finish first in A5, wasn’t expecting that. Fun race!
great summary Mike. thank you.
My tactic for the evening: don’t go alone.
I chose lightweight wheels, and well, after a rocket start, everyone else got away from me 🙂 When I saw the group with Stelviobound and David1951 catching their second wind, I decided to speed up and catch up with them. We worked well together and caught up with Neil’s group. However, the pace was too fast for me, so I had to save my energy for the finish. Neil pulled away, and 4Worldpeace and I rode together at a steady pace.
As the steeper climb began, the tactics began to pay off. I started climbing at my own pace and felt like I still had the strength to fight. And this time, Neil, you were my carrot and I managed to chase you away:)
Then I got passed by a few riders and Oldhai caught up with me, and I finished with him. I don’t know why he didn’t abandon me, maybe he didn’t want to go alone? 🙂
It was a really good time for me; I really enjoy this teamwork. Thank you all 🙂
Next Thursday is the sprinters’ battle, not my cup of tea, but I have to try and who knows what will happen.
I knew i was gonna end up the carrot! lol but you climbed really well on that last part and i just knew you’d get me!
Jumped back into the Muckers a bit too soon. The last 5 km were brutal, out of shape, elbow and arm pain kicking in hard, and I was on the verge of pulling the plug every kilometer. Slipped down quite a few spots in the final stretch, but there was nothing left in the tank. Not even sure I’ll line up for the flat race next week. Just one month post–elbow surgery and I still can’t put weight on the arm, which makes it tough to get out of the saddle and hang on when the pace really goes up
Mate, you said you were out for the rest of the year and 3 weeks later you’re back! So this more than just a “bit too soon” 🤷♂️. Please chill, get better and come back strong when you are ready. Sunniva even said a few weeks back to ride with us for now, it’d be nice to have you with us, but more than anything, look after yourself!
I say last week that in this something should be to change, in fact I go for 4 days to Barcelona and I can’t start on the line because I’m drive to home. Congratulations all of you who started and also to my directs opponents in A8.
I hold the 3 position, and hope to ride in the next race. Cheers to all 👋🦈
i can’t make the Thursday race next week so i’m thinking of doing the 23:30 version on the Wednesday night as its quite a short route… maybe….
Col de Tende with fun till the ende. Muckers always attract best riders on the platform and tonight was not different. I was ready and we started with flat section, but step by step going up. 18 riders in lead group, two short connectivity issues, but i was lucky and did not get dropped.
First real attacks by Alieno, Brian splitted group soon to less than ten riders. When we approached final sections i could not accept high pace and stayed alone between small groups. Rlouro was very dangerous till the end, but i could hold my position against his super smart trainer. Very happy with performance, best i could achieve for now. Thank you all who joined us!
superb race Karel. you were top placed A2 rider as well, just the ballast dropping you down the order in the final results. should be an interesting final race.
