MUCKERS 2026 FEBRUARY CHAMPIONSHIP RACE 2.

ROUTE AND RACE DETAILS:

GF Asheville | North Carolina | USA | 25.99 miles | 2,841 ft. elevation

ROUVY SAY: Filmed soon after Hurricane Helene, this event provides an inside look at the effects of the storm on the Asheville, North Carolina area. This route includes some of the best serpentine roads, climbs, and descents around Asheville. This E-Fondo will include three timed segments. Time Section #1 of the E-Fondo is the same as Section #2 in the 2024 Gran Route at Gran Fondo Asheville. To be included in the results, riders must register for the E-Fondo Series.

WE SAY: lets get our draft on!! Well, for some of us we did, for some not so much due to tonight’s glitch but hey-ho, we are Muckers and we just deal with it!

Not long before we don’t have the use of NITEOR due to its immanent closure so lets enjoy it for the rest of the month. (Please see separate blog and please comment there if you feel the need to get anything NITEOR related off your chest so we can keep the comments on this blog are for this race. thanks team!)

I kinda thought we’d get low numbers for this month due to these quite long and hilly routes we are using from the GF routes, but 113 riders set a time so lets see how many we have to remove (which always hurts on such a big ride) and we can add all those riders into the GC and categories below. 99 of you stuck to it, well done, thats a really good percentage!

ok, lets go!

TO FINISH OFF:

long race tonight and it was a shame so many of us experienced glitches, but crap happens sometimes and it just makes us stronger! But i have to ask, who decided to call that last “segment” a “rolling segment”????? 😏. It was a climb, into a downhill… more a Role (singular) that rolling if you ask us… But its also nice to have these segments included in the races isn’t it, but that was a bit of a stretch to classify it as rolling…

56th in the GC, up from 64th last week….. kinda feels like I’m heading for just outside the top 50 again doesn’t it lol.

Tonight’s race started off misleadingly well. I thought i was in 48th place and climbing quite nicely at the start, and even caught up to Sunniva and co. so i could tag along for the next flattish section before the first proper climb. Climbed at a relaxed pace as this race is long, but weirdly i was dropping places even though i wasn’t being overtaken by anyone. Also my profile along the bottom showed 37 riders still on the start line. So obviously we are having a glitch tonight.

Went for a fast cadence along the middle section and caught 2 riders up, over took them, but my race position had now dropped into the high 60s.Pretty much rode up the last climb solo, then did the nice and long last green section, at quite a nice pace, but again, whilst riding along, i’m loosing even more places and no one is around me. cross the line in around 74th place.

Shame as i was well up for this tonight but once it was clear something was wrong, i did kinda loose some motivation to push as hard as i should have. This week has pretty much sucked anyway so time to recover and hopefully be ready and determined for the hill climb on Sunday. 🤞

Except for the start climb, this looked like a route suited to my peculiar talents. But first the opening climb. I could see folk just ahead that I’m usually with at times like this: simonjp, RaTim, wolli.d; just had to grit teeth and dig down and stay with them. We passed MatthiasHeil along here somewhere–maybe not doing too badly? Over the first top and onto the rollers toward the second climb I was in a group of, I think, 8 or so, including EddyDomino, Dave12, and KarianneKanebog, my A3 competition, so just keep gritting it out! Dave and Karianne disappeared along here. Dave reappeared but looks like Karianne unfortunately glitched and DNFd. I don’t think the top 30 or so had the same glitches as Neil had? Anyways, onto the steep part of the second climb at 10 km and I managed to equal my best 5 – 8 minute W stretch of the year so far. Our group reeled in Pablo1945 here too. Pablo surged and dropped us on the rollers after the second climb, but a massive effort by macko and Velosport34Lattes brought them up from behind. Macko dropped his chain at the base of the third climb and I hesitated, thinking to wait. Mostly because the thought of a massive effort to keep up with Eddy and Dave at that point filled me with dread. But I went for it. Caught Velosport and got to within 70 m of Dave before the top, Eddy had gapped us. Dave was 400 m ahead by the time I got up to speed over the top but, hey, I’m a good descender. I reeled Dave in by halfway down, and the two of us, slingshoting together, got to within 200 m of Eddy before running out of road. It was a fun race!

Very good race Mike, you were incredible in the ascent, it was really difficult to gain this 20+ sec at the end of the second climb. Then I had to pedal as hard as I could to reach the finish line with both of you on my back…

I don’t know if anyone noticed a very small article on the inside of your local sports newspaper but today was the last day ever for 80 year old Pablo to race. WE decided to celebrate by designating it an A race. A rocket start? My rocket is like a damp party popper, but go with what you got. Pffft. Two minutes into the race I was in 13th place. Now only about 75 minutes to go. Was in a strong little group of committed racers, Macho, Wyverns, Svard and a few others. Into the first real climb..I did 4.0w/kg to the top, waited just a but to be sure to have a group to hang onto. A rather large nasty group a few hundred meters behind, and then, wow, they were upon us. We all stayed together, which brought me great joy. Popped a GU-vanilla bean caffinated, as we hit the long stretch to the money climb. Noone really wanted to work. A bit boring I thought, and MikeHagen was lurking exactly one meter off my rear wheel. I quickly reviewed my race options, and went with a Remco E move..seated, slowly increasing the tempo and gear, seeing if anyone wanted to play, and maybe drain a bit of energy from other legs. The GU kicked in, and a kilometer later I had a gap. What a great chance to practice my still lame ITT..cadence to 90+, 52/13/11 gears…and at least 15 minutes to focus. I then hit the last climb, segment 2, popped another GU-chocolate, caffinated this time. Dropped to the inside chainring, and continued with the 90 cadence. Soon I came upon Svard and m-forby. This too made me happy, hopefully someone with whom to do the last long descent. We all worked it very hard, but cooperatively. I did that segment in 4.6w/kg. I wanted as much time on the chasers by the top as I could get. Svard dropped off a bit, and then m-forby. I waited just a bit at the top, and then we traded pulls down the mountain. Halfway down I had a very brief lapse of concentration, and m-forby was gone. What a great descender. I need to ask him about his gearing. But at this point, I was not going to catch anyone, and noone was going to catch me. It was getting somewhat unpleasant but I kept the cadence and the gear to the finish.
So, I can say that on the day of my A race, I had an A race. The only downside is that with all of the GU, and the big mug of black coffee before the race, I have not been able to get a well deserved nap
One more thing, rumor has it that starting tomorrow, 13/2/26, a spiffy new 81 yo version of Pablo1945 will appear. He expects to show up on the Sunday hillclimb, and then Monday the 16th has promised to ride/race with Sharky to help him recover from the Olympics, even at a very early hour in the morning. cheers everyone..(Pablo1945

  4. UncleE64 says:

Lol! Paul you are truly amazing. I raced as a teenager and ran track, but nothing like you dude. I hope I’m half as fit as you when I’m 81. The good news for me is that I had just one goal for today – to finish. Mission accomplished.
For one shining moment I thought I’d passed one of my main A6 (and age group) competitors – Duckman2. It was still a long way to the last climb (he climbs better than I), so I’m thinking “hey, I have a chance!” Sadly, like Neil I was cruising along thinking I was in about 32nd place when all of a sudden I started dropping places without seeing anyone go by me. Turns out Duckman2 was still about 1000 ft ahead of me. I thought about surging again to try to catch him, but to what end? He was sure to leave me gasping for air on that last climb. Places continued to drop with no one going past. Oh well. Finished out of top 50 but it was a good ride and no complaints. Races 3 and 4 this month are “more of the same”, so hoping I can finish those too. Goal is top 50 for the month to at least “get on the board”, but the points are super tight around 50 right now. Fun times!

    Happy birthday Pablo!

That kind of riding at your age is incredible!

Fantastic race tonight, even though I kept glitching, i kept getting error messages and my connection completely dropped out of the race for about 10 minutes on the flat section between the two main climbs. I Was tempted to stop riding, but felt I had to finish the ride, even if it didn’t count in the championship. It was really hard to be motivated to keep going in that section as I knew I had lost all benefits of a draft, but when the other riders suddenly reappeared i had only lost 3 or 4 places. Was able to work with a couple of riders after the last climb, to keep a chasing pack including Chorus and RaTim at bay. I tried to stay with some of the quicker riders on the first climb, Mike Hagen, Eddy Domino and co. But trying to push over 330 watts uphill is not sustainable for too long for me – no excuses needed here, don’t have the legs to match these boys!

Still, great race tonight- and proves that you’re always better to keep going, even if you think you race is done, you might just still be in the fight!

  6. Michael Michelius says:

First things first: Paul aka Pablo1945: Happy Birthday, enjoy the day. When I first saw your Rouvy name, I thought, OK, that could never be his year of birth. Respect – others your age are just making their way to the couch, and you’re beating your competitors on Rouvy week after week! I could say that I want to be as fit as you when I’m 81. But the truth is, I wish I’d be as fit as you at 51 😁😁

Thursday evenings, it’s race night. Since the route was quite long for a Thursday, I decided to take it a little easier. At first, I was riding with Neil, Sunniva, ValRZ, and others. Somehow, my legs felt really good, and I thought, okay, let’s pick up the pace a little. On the last climb, “Duckman 2” came into view. You have to know that Mick and Duck usually end up in an epic battle. I was able to catch up slowly but steadily. At the top, I caught up with him. Wow, as always, it was an extremely tough battle. Unfortunately, I had to jump off my bike shortly after the climb (to take my kid to ice hockey training) I hoped my bike would find its way to the finish line on its own, as it was all downhill from there. When I came back 30 minutes later, my avatar was standing alone and lonely on a small kicker. So I lit the red lantern and rolled the last few meters to the finish line.

    • Neil Rushby says:

ahhhh, that last bit now makes sense to a lot of things. ps i never saw you near me or in my list for that first part. hopefully this was just a one off glitch and not the start of an issue.

    • Duckman2 says:

That was a great course, fun riding with you once again. For those that don’t know Michael is the first person who told me about the Muckers races which eventually led me to switch from BKool, where as Duckman I used to ride with a great group of folks from the Chaingang, to Rouvy.

  7. Tomáš Hloušek says:

    Happy birthday Pablo!
After the initial climb, I was in a group where I didn’t belong. I said to myself, OK, I’ll stay in the group until the first hill and see. I rode my own pace on the climb and none of the visible riders dropped out with me. I didn’t want the group behind to catch up and overtake me on the descent, so I didn’t ride completely freely on the descent. On the flatter section, I slowly let the group with Ludwig, Akoval and Wolli (maybe with others too) catch up with me. We rode down the final hill in quite good cooperation. On it, I stayed behind with Akoval. I even slowed down a bit (I had a better frame for climbing and a worse one for descending) and hoped that maybe we could catch someone together on the way down. At first, however, I was pulling alone on the descent, but later we cooperated well and I was surprised that we couldn’t pull Ludwig, who was riding alone. In the end, it turned out that he wasn’t alone… Unsurprisingly, I lost the sprint, but in the end I was satisfied with the race and my placing. With my legs still a little heavy from the weekend climb of Mauna Kea and the detour of Rhodes Island and Tuesday’s battle with the Andy, I probably couldn’t have done any better. Despite the ghosts and one microglitch, it was a good race.

  8. Dominique EddyDomino RODRIGUEZ says:

Since the beginning of this strange and non-funny year 2026, the routes for the Thursday races are really hard, long and interesting. In my opinion, I think they are better than the totally flat ones… This is due to the current Rouvy challenges. I hope this will continue…
Furthermore this one as a little steep climb at the beginning: excellent thing to calm the rocket starter pals🚀 ! The first climb was quite steep, my sensations were quite good I achieved my best 2-month 9mn power peak, this was not enough to get rid of my newly A3 rivals Dave12 & MikeH…
During the somehow flat part between the hills we met Pablo45, but he decided to crushed us with a 6-9W/kg tempo! We were caught by Velosport34Lattes and Macko, which had the effect of increase our pace.
Then arrived the last climb, I haven’t seen that Macko had a little problem, focused as I was to produce a strong effort in order to leave my group pals. This happened but the breakaway was quite short, and I had to continue my effort in the last part, seeing MikeH caught Dave12 and then both of them gaining meter after meter. Fortunatly, the finish line was there.
Again, this was a really good race on a really nice route, I look forward to seeing all of you next thursday for another quasi identical route, for another funny time!
Thanks to all the contesters and of course for the organizers.
A last word on the app problem, during the race I was in 14-16th position, but after the line 21st… There were ghost riders, for instance I’ve never seen Grochang which was in front of us.

    • Neil Rushby says:

even if i don’t find a way to keep the championship going in all its various categories and ballast etc etc, i will still arrange the longer challenge routes to run on Thursdays. But we just have to see what challenges emerge…..

  9. Sunniva says:

Looking at the leaderboard, I actually see something different than what I experienced. On my screen, I finished ahead of the guys in my group, but on the scoreboard, I’m behind them 🙂 Klinthtomie finished 1 second ahead of me, and I didn’t see him anywhere near me throughout the race.

I was also surprised to see 35 riders still standing at the starting line. Is this the first time we’ve had this kind of mistake?

The race itself was very enjoyable for me; LinV gave me a lot of support. I was wondering when she would drop me, but luckily, she only did it on the last, steepest section.

A lot of work and cooperation, just how I like it 🙂 Thank you all 🙂

    • Klinthomie says:

Maybe that was why I won the sprint??? You couldn’t see me?

No wonder nobody thumbed up back at me then …

    • Neil Rushby says:

i saw the 35/37 riders on the start as well, and it was only on the last climb. long downhill finish where that number started to drop and my position change. it must have been as all those riders who we had stuck at the start line, finished ahead of us? anyway, hopefully it was just a one off 🤞🤞🤞🤞

  10. Hans says:

Splashed out 75.000 on the Wilier Filante SLR ID2 and combined it with the new Castelli aero socks to add a nice italian touch to my avatar … and it seemed to do the trick 🤌🏻🇮🇹
Survived the horrible start of the route – with 130 vertical metes in the first 2 km – in the front group of 13 (I could only see 9 riders but our excellent directeur sportif Niels informed us all of the whereabouts of the various ghostriders on the route including the 4 in the front group).
Had looked at the route beforehand and I knew that the second climb basically was a 2 km wall with over 10% average so realistically there was a lot stronger, more explosive and/or lighter riders in our group so I chose to pace the climb instead of trying to stay in the group. Teamed up with Simon half way up the climb and we stayed together the rest of the way splitting the work evenly and pacing it really well keeping a good distance to the group behind us. Thanx for another fun race guys eventhough I couldn’t see all of you 👍🏻 I completely agree with Dominique – it was especially nice with a long race with a lot of changes underway … and of course many vertical meters 😁 Keep them coming that way Neil, but perhaps with a slightly less hard start 🥴

  11. My goal this week was to just survive. Next week will be the same just survive and hope that it makes me stronger. February has be challenging all around. Here in the Mid-atlantic states. I live at the intersection of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. The temperatures have hovered in the single digits (fahrenheit) for two weeks. That is 25-30 degrees lower than normal. We had a snow storm storm before the cold snap. 14″ of snow that turned into 3 more inches of sleet. Really heavy, I still shovel my 150 foot driveway by hand. Normally we can let the sun take care of some of the clean up. Not this time, snow doesn’t melt when the high is only 10 degrees. So like my time on the bike this month I’m just trying to survive the weather and hope it makes me stronger. Next week more climbing 2,953′ vertical oh no, but it’s only 25.3 miles 😒😁😂 Man I love this stuff. Happy Birthday Paul.

  12. Klinthomie says:

I feared this route going into it – and unfortunately my fears were not unfounded. This was perhaps the worst and most excruciating race I have ever done?

I hit the wall several times, ran out of water, felt like puking, almost fell of the bike and wanted to give up SO many times.

I decided it was going to be about finishing the stage, in order to secure some points for the championship, and so I did finish it. But not without repercussions. When I was done, I was shaking like Mathias Skjelmose at La Vuelta. Fetal position on the couch, wife had to comfort me, shaking like hell …a hot shower helped, but it took me a good 2-3 hours to get back to normal.

Well, I found out today, that I am ill! Some sort of crazy stomach flu. Now it makes a lot more sense. Still, lesson learned: there’s a healthy way of pushing yourself, expanding your limits and there’s a bad way. I did the wrong thing yesterday. I did not listen to my body.

Back to the race. I follower UncleE and Paul Bateman on the first climb. Got dropped by UncleE and at some point, I was only pushing 2.0 w/kg, it was all about finishing. It somewhat helped my morale that Paul wasn’t dropping me as well. Lin, Sunniva and 4worldpeace caught up to me at the end of the second climb, and I followed along with them and made use of their slipstream – but maybe they could not see me? Could anybody see me?

Won the final sprint in front of 3-4 riders and the rest is history. I will be taking a solid break from the bike and try to recover.

Btw, ValRdz is the craziest diesel engine! Always coming from the back at this steady pace, warming up as the incline starts to increase. I am scared when I see her name pop up om screen, haha!
