MUCKERS JULY CHAMPIONSHIP. RACE 2. 11/07/24
ROUVY Route Used: Motukarara to Little River | New Zealand | 18.02 miles | 230ft climbing
Introduction:
Lets talk about our race selections shall we….. As you know we try to only use challenge routes and as a rule, on the day they get released is when we schedule them. Sometimes we can do it sooner if we need to schedule a race or two within a few weeks of the challenge starting, as a challenge will always be a few weeks long, minimum, but we always have to wait for the challenge to actually start as this is the only time we get to find out the end date! So once we know that, we see if any can still be used and they get scheduled ASAP. We will always try and select the ones we feel will be the most fun to race on for Thursdays, the ones that seem the hardest for Sundays, then the rest on Tuesdays. So if ROUVY release a challenge full of flat routes, we will end up with a few of them scheduled all at once to try and fit them in before the challenge ends. I see a lot of comments pop up about the types of routes selected so I hope this explains how routes get picked.
Ok, lets see how the guys in the extra races did without the help of the draft that most will have got in the main race:

Frustrating race for me. Tried the fast start and was in a nice pack around 20th place with the pack behind a good 500ft behind so it looked like 20th to 25th might be in the bag. The pack behind was pulling 3.0s so i tried to stay above this and even jumped on the front at 3.5s 3 or 4 times, hit the take a pull button several times, no one did and they all just stayed at 2.8/2.9s behind me!! And I’m the weakest one of this lot. 😖. So i gave up, threw my toys out of the pram and waited for the pack behind to catch up. What a surprise (NOT) that all these riders now found some power to latch onto this very fast group and we were now a massive pack from 15th to 32nd! So no way of breaking away from this lot so tried to conserve energy for the last part even though i knew it was now pointless as this group is strong from front to back.
We hit the last section and its all fractured up, i knew very early it wasn’t on for me and just set myself up for a 30th place, but then Duckman2 came back to me, but then kept accelerating away. It was like he was saying “hurry up!!” lol Gingerjitters was putting on the pressure from behind and closing the gap so i had to go deep just to make sure he didn’t get my position, but in doing so, i also took Duckman on the line just to be on the safe side!
It’s funny now looking back on it just how annoyed I got! If I’d have thought about it properly, I should have seen that our group at the beginning was always gonna get caught so maybe the others had realized this much sooner than me! I was just feeling really on it at the start and knew if we got caught up by the group I wasn’t gonna do well in an uphill finish like we had so wanted to try and max the start I’d had.
Ah well, still got some nice points in for the championship which might just keep me in the top 50 when I miss the last one of the month.
@gingerjitters here. Thank you for organizing. I missed the first race because I did not realize this was a thing. I happened upon the second race and, after looking at the start list, was hesitant to join – I thought that I would get dropped straight away. I ultimately decided to give it a go. I was at my limit most of the race and got dropped by the 15-32 pack near the end – i cannot sprint so I tried one last big pull (for me) with the hope of thinning the group but instead I blew up :). I had a great time though and am looking forward to the next one (assuming I can fit it in with work). Thanks again for organizing and letting me tag along with your pack!!
hey Luke, thanks for reaching out as i tried to see if your race came up on strava as i was gonna give you some stick for all that pressure at the end lol! So happy you found us, it’s a great bunch and will get so much more busier in a few months time when everyone comes back inside that the races will be even more fun! you’ll love it, as racing really does push you harder than you think you can go! see you next time!
This is a nice route, suitable for a hard work mule like me… lately I don’t start too fast and for this reason I often miss the fast train, but yesterday I joined a group that is usually above my expectations but as always I throw my heart into it and concentration was at its best today. I’m happy to have held my own for 29km against friends like Mike, Grochang, m-forby, matthias and lately I often ride near vcycling198.
I didn’t make many shots, but I always pushed high where my characteristics help me, in fact the group always worked at high speed and my if data also showed me this. In the end the only option was to risk starting early to perhaps earn something on the line, but the sprint with these sacred monsters was already written, even vcycling thought so, he got burned first and I got second… but finally an excellent 13th place after so much effort. Thanks everyone 💪
Normally I would test my ability to hold on to the front group for as long as possible on a flat route like this then end up too far ‘in the red’ before falling back down the field. Tonight I wanted a controlled steady pace from start to finish, I suggested a 3.0w/kg peloton to the Muckers but there were ‘no takers’ so I decided to see what would develop at the start.
Started at 3.0w/kg but there was always another rider just ahead so I pressed the pedals a little harder to avoid losing drafting options. I started with Jeff65, we hooked up with rouvy1bryon, then kylofski’s little group and suddenly we had a nice flowing bunch and I was quite comfortable. The next group ahead seemed to be pulling a similar pace and were 500ft/600ft away but I think our bunch could smell blood and gradually the gap very slowly reduced until we could see them. The group was now enormous and working very well together, I think I saw every rider hit the front at some point, some riders wanted to break up the group with hard attacks but that was no benefit to me so we let them dangle out front before they came back to the draft. So, with a slight group split near the end, it came to a mass sprint. I had spotted it was an uphill sprint, so I decided to ignore anyone coming past when they got ‘twitchy’ as the split banner appeared on screen, then I went hard at 700ft passing a number of fading riders before the line. I briefly thought I’d won our little sprint but fellow Mucker HalAir pipped me on the line. Only 5 ‘4-6’w/kg surges on my stats so my constant pace strategy was a success even if my overall power average was higher than planned.
Race stats: Age : 57, Weight : 95kg, IF=1.034
Averages : 161bpm, 295w, 3.10w/kg.
Impromptu Muckers race for me this evening, had intended to do one of the french climbing routes in Z2 but checked the Events and saw this race was on in 15minutes – so changed my plans and joined 🙂
As I have just finished 3x 4 weeks training blocks plus FTP-testing I wasnt fresh but aimed to stay around threshold for this effort, first 10min averaged 3.5w/kg with a mellow start off the line, and I was up in the front of the 2nd big group most of the time. No desire to chase the fast leading group. Seveal riders were not visually present, some didnt provide draft so a little confusing group to stay within.
Stayed controlled and just made sure I was up front most of the time, and managed (barely!) to cross the line as first in that group 🙂 Nice to race with familiar faces again, next chance will be in August due to vacation time! Have a great summer Muckers 😀
Really enjoyed this ride, nice and flat to suit the heavier rider, pre race chat, Neil was going off at 4w, and Steven at a slower 3w, so the latter was a manageable pace for myself to maintain? Ended up in a fairly large group containing fellow Muckers Kyloski, Rouvybyron, S Ludford and many more,3w soon became 3.5w, so was on my upper limit keeping up ( apologies for my lack of work at the front), managed to reel several riders in, and we eventually caught the faster group including Neil, and so many familiar riders. Was feeling fairly comfortable at the rear of the large group, until I glitched 3 miles from the finish, and lost 285ft, which I couldn’t make up. Many thanks for all the time and effort to admin for organising these races 👍
Those absolutely flat routes are always kolling me. And after wednesday’s gran fondo and 50 km recovery ride in the afternoon I didn’t expect nothing from myself. I was not able to help pulling. Sorry mates maybe next time.
Not quite my usual start, and it almost cost me! Fortunately some other stranglers came by and we worked our way onto the very big lead group. 16 in the group? I thought we’d all stay together on this very flat course right until the little ramp at the end. But the big guns had other plans; they throttled up on the small bump about 5 km in and left us pretenders behind. The group broke in half. Oh well, the pretenders were a nice group. There were two of the Mucker Vikings, Grochang and m-forby; Mucker Shark of the Alps was hanging in, that was good to see; Gure colleague KlausKinski was there, where I can keep an eye on him–he’s been very close to me the past few Thursdays; same with vcycling198; and MatthiasHeil was there. I’m always happy to see Matthias early, it usually means I’m doing well, and I imagine he’s happy to see me late, because it means *he’s* doing well. Both things were true this time, so it was a good race! Actually can’t remember much about the finish. Just put my head down and gave everything, second highest 2 min power of the year, and managed to get third in our little group. Pleased with that.
