MUCKERS JULY CHAMPIONSHIP RACE 3. 18/07/24

ROUVY Route Used: Saint-Lary-Soulan to Pla d’Adet | France | 7.53miles | 2953ft Climbing

Introduction:

First thing is to tell you I will be on vacation for the next 2 weeks so there’ll be no Championship race reports for the next 2 races. I will do them when I get home, but it means a wait for the last one of this month and the first one in August. All being well, they will be published on or around the 4th of August.

Round 3 and after 2 nice and rapid flattish rounds, its time to mix it up and enter into a hill climb race! These aren’t for everyone so well done to everyone who finished this route as nearly 3000 feet is nothing to turn your nose up at, especially after a long day at work! We are a Lets see if anyone attempted this in any of the other start times first, then lets see how the main race results came in.

2EARLY4ME RACE RESULT:

NO ONE HAD A GO AT THIS TIME!

EARLY-ON RACE RESULT:

NO ONE HAD A GO AT THIS TIME EITHER!

LATER-ON RACE RESULT:

NO ONE FANCIED THIS ONE….

2LATE4ME RACE RESULT:

Well done Muckers! was worried then we weren’t gonna get anyone on the extra start times but you 2 didn’t let me down!! Its either down to this not being the most appealing race route, or that ROUVY are now struggling to make our races official since the latest update. Who knows??

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

i think i spent so much of the warm up hoping i could stay at 2.8-3.0 that i didn’t notice i was on the Madone rather than a climbing bike, but i realized this much later into the race! Was holding it quite nicely at the start and in a great group but they soon started to ramp over 3.0 and i was too worried about my strategy that i let them go. It was all pointless as by the time I’d got over half way, i was dead and was only just about holding 2.5s so i just tried to ride to the top without letting anyone catch, which also didn’t work as I was passed by 2 riders near the end. I absolutely hate climbing races, but I will always put them in to give all riders with different skills and strengths, the chance to do well in a different type of race to the other races in that month.

I’ll miss next week due to Vacation but I think I’m safe inside the top 50 with my 3 finishes out of the 4. 🤞

Aha, happened to me as well. Should have checked before the race but was steeling myself up for the grind.

  2. Manuel Lamber SHARK says:

Well, with these very hot days, seeing the course in all red… I was already worried. Quiet start, because here I have to sweat for at least an hour… I’m in a nice trio with Duckman2 and Phil_SCRT, but then in the long climb we split up, with the 🦈 in the middle of the two 🇺🇸.
I don’t like long climbs but we have to do them… from the rear I see Big L. slowly arriving and I know that in recent months he shoots a lot of W and so I try to understand if he will catch me or stay behind. Logically it comes under me and here I told myself that I absolutely had to stick to its wheels. We stimulated each other and with our heads down we recovered and overtook Duckman2, in the end I always kept an eye behind and recognizing Big Loudford’s hard work I didn’t want to launch the final sprint…. great Muckers friends ❤️💪

  3. Steven Ludford says:

A big climb tonight but I like a continuous gradient where I can maintain a nice rhythm. Started easy drafting as much as possible before the climb then settled into a 3w/kg pace. I could see names ahead that provided a good incentive and used the short 20% section to stand on the pedals and push on towards them. My target was Muckers teammate ‘Squalo_delli_Alpi’, I know if I can reach ‘The Shark’ he also likes a steady tempo on climbs and we can hopefully work together on the lower gradients to catch ‘Duckman2’. We connected and started the chase, for a long time I didn’t think we would succeed but I could see that ‘Duckman’s’ power was fluctuating, suggesting efforts out of the saddle, so hoping this indicated tired legs I dug a little deeper and the heart rate was rising. Finally got our man near the finish then protected positions to the line, ‘Squalo’ could have got me at the end but was thanking me for my earlier efforts, I give thanks in return.

As a flat-lander I’ve had a tough week of climbing: Hochtannbergpass (2644 feet) on Tuesday with America’s Watts race then this route. Legs were still Jello from Tuesday so decided to keep it around 2.0-2.5 w/Kg for a slow ride. Have fun on vacation Neil!

  5. Mike Hagen says:

Excuses first: some big outdoor activities over the past few days, and another coming up on Saturday, so I wasn’t inclined to do a huge effort. Wanted to maintain my July Champ standing though. So a good effort the first two km to get position, and then I tried to hold 3.7-3.8 W/kg up the climb. Worked really well! I was a bit piqued that RaTim and KlausKinski were just ahead and drifting away but so it goes. bikeanddogtrips and DonMatteo_07 were battling just ahead too, but for me that was a fight for another day. Maybe even next week: La Hourquette looks like fun! See you then.

  6. karel sousek says:

Climbers paradise with short, yet very hilly race. Like always in hot summer, main concern was not profile, but indoor climate conditions. We started and soon strong group formed with Premek, lrollin and Stefan, however he got quickly little gap, probably riding his pace. That was very good strategy as one could easily push too much in the beginning.

Advantage of leading trio was slowly growing, then we lost lrollin. I was also few times under pressure, but so far could follow him. Tiny watt savings in climb in draft, later on there were few flatter sections for a while. Another concern was my heart rate monitor, which i forgot tighten before, as i lost some weight recently. Last thing i want, to get DSQ because of that.

Final passage of the race is here, now im mostly balancing on the edge of staying with Premek or getting cramps. I could feel Premek is today stronger, so finished few seconds behind. Very cool racing and performance by everyone, thank you all who joined!

  7. KlausKinski says:

Wonderful race! I was already looking forward to a good, long climb after watching every day how the pros climbed the Pyrenees and the Alps in the Tour. In principle it was a stage that suited me well with my 1.80 m and 64 Kgs so after the flat area at the beginning, I set my pace and forgot about the position I was occupying, trusting that time was in my favor and that as the minutes it would progress. First I overcame RaTim with a lot of effort and in the final part, I managed to catch up with DonMatteo and bikeanddogtrips whose changes of pace made me think that they had more strength left than me and this was demonstrated in the final part in which I could not withstand their change of rhythm.

Thanks to all the participants and the organization for remembering the light climbers who suffered so much in those flat stages of pure power…

  8. Tomáš Hloušek (RaTim) says:

It’s a strange thing that with my figure (164/78) I like climbing. As I was enjoying such a profile, I promised myself work hard. After start I hold strong riders and for the first time I was in #1 position in main Mucker’s race – for a while 🤣🤣🤣
When climbing start the stronger disappeared and I tried to hold 3.8. Whole ride I waited when Mike speed up and I was mostly watching my power and nearby list instead scenery 😉
We hold same gap between us nearly whole race. At the end I gave all in. The result was 8th place, best FTP for last month and nearly best ever FTP.
Neil thanks for this route (although you “don’t like” this) Enjoy your holyday.
