MUCKERS MARCH CHAMPIONSHIP RACE 2. 14/03/24

ROUVY Route Used: Challenge Puerto Varas | Chile 45 km | 27.71miles | 1118ft climbing

2EARLY4ME RACE RESULT:

Nice result from 2 long term muckers racers, but looks like team rider “rmadden1” got the nod just in front of “kaihu”! And final top 3 mention goes to the lucky (lucky as in they are a NED but outside the main race top 50 times so not checked) “hellonana”

LATER-ON RACE RESULT:

One rider tried but ended up a DNF

2LATE4ME RACE RESULT:

All these guys times are outside the main race top 50 times this week which is more than luckily down to them trying to get a solo effort in against the massive advantage the main race has with the draft. but thanks to the usual guys for coming along and giving it a go, we just need to get this race slot more popular somehow?? “jettro” gives it a great shot though for 1st place, “cdtchris” gets a nice silver and “bjm151” gets the bronze this time! Well done guys.

MAIN RACE RESULT:

96 Registered | 74 Starters | 68 Finishers | 6 DNF | 22 DNS

2nd race of the championship and we head to a 27 miler in Chile from the North and South challenge. only 1100ft of climbing so we hope the new draft effect will help riders motor along quite nicely even though it’s a bit longer than a “normal” race route.

We have a 4 way battle for first with “Breers33” getting the win, just in front of “BareRemi” in 2nd, “Gil.Mad.io” in 3rd and “karel_sousek” in 4th! Just 2 seconds covering the top 4, then we have a 30 second wait for a photo finish between “andy_emmo” in 5th and “RocketRoy” in 6th with the exact same finish time! 7th comes a sprint out again with “Minyana_GURE” just getting the best of “lrollin” in 8th. A bit of a wait for the solo effort of “tranberg” in 9th, then quite a wait for the rest of the riders to come streaming through with the first one being “IvanSagan86” who gets the final place in the top 10!

Sprint for 11th next with “adampel” just pipping “Alieno79” into 12th, then our first NED bumps our very own pocket rocket “Andy_UP” into 13th place! Next is the race for the final Top 20 mentions and its “chorus” 1st in 14th place, “Stefan_schmidt” in 15th, “cespa” in 16th, then a small gap to “Grep.” in 17th, A No-Mans-Land finish for “BTK_jiri70_cz” for 18th then finally a 4 way fight for the last 2 mentions with “neminemlaedere” getting 19th and “owin.d” the last mention in 20th place. Well done to you all and a well deserved mention today after such a long and challenging ride!

Well done to everyone who finished this and all i can hope is you got to draft at some point as this was a long route if you got no help along it! Championship table is just below the final race standings below. Remember, the NEDs have been removed from the top 50 and the rest who finish in the top 50 get the bumps up once those riders above them have been removed. No checks done from 51st place and downwards on championship races.

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

Started in a group of 9 at place 23-31 with Mike Hagen and I can’t remember which other Muckers. Lost some, gained some. We were working well together, I worked hard to stay with the group uphill and take my turn in the front downhill. Until I got dropped all of a sudden and I still don’t know why 🤷‍♀️. I was only 6 m behind at first, but even standing on my pedals didn’t bring me back 🥵. Then gave up and rode with Tom Rieger for a while until I saw the gang of Niels Brynnum 🇩🇰 , Mads Grosen 🏊‍♂️🚴🏃‍♂️🇩🇰 , Bill Harvison and Dok PS steaming up to us. I didn’t want to miss that train! I thought the Danes were trying to get rid of us on every hill, but I hung in there 🥵. Mads told me later that Niels was just doing intervals and waiting for him at each top 🤣. So proud of myself that I could stay in this group until Dok PS decided to go 10 W/kg on the final km downhill. I thought we could all draft behind him, who tries this on a downhill?! But I couldn’t follow, the other guys took advantage though 👍. Very pleased with my 33 place, had lots of (drafting) fun with a lot of Muckers 😄

    • Dok_PS says:

I thought I was doing the intervals but maybe this was a coincidence… the course was much too flat for my taste and the start was so fast. You did so well…. I tried something special in the end. It did not work out. 200 meters to early or one interval to much… 🤷‍♂️

    • Neil Rushby says:

I was with you at the start but even then i knew it was just a bit too hot of a pace for me for 27 miles, at one stage you all kicked and I reluctantly let you go but the next train I joined was perfect for me. Well done!

  2. HalAir says:

March will be my last primary month of indoor riding, and I want to see what I can do in the March Championship – so rescheduled previous plans for this night so I could join the start-pen 🙂 This route was also my final challenge route so went for a 2in1 🙂

My head wanted to race, I had fuelled well during the day and was eager to go, planned to start fairly hard and try to hold my place within a fast group. 1min into the ride I was in a group of 10, drafting was good and pace was great. Many familiar names around me, many Muckers jerseys 🙂 After 7-8km I was starting to hurt and fell out at the back of my current group, and dropped down to the next one. Legs felt tired and lacking energy, heart was racing and recovering was inefficient.
After about 2/3 of the ride I fell out hte back again going over a small crest and booooom, 150m lost in an instant. So had to resort to ride alone onwards as next group behind was some distance away…
However, Lyndon dod make a valiant effort to close it in as I could see he was powered on and distance shrunk steadily.. Didnt want to drop another place so had to push to maintain safe separation.
Rolled over the finish line as 35th and pleased this ride was over – did not have good day on the bike.

I should not be surprised though as since last Sunday I have been on a cut to reduce my weight and may have been too aggressive. But the feel / impact of this depletion did surprise me though. RPE was high compared to my raw power number for this ride.

Netted a 30th place tonight, same position as in Round 1 so atleast I’ve been consistent 😀
19th after two rounds in the GC, with two rounds to go!

Super frustrating 2LATE4ME race: the downloaded video started freezing at about the 4 mile mark and continued repeatedly through the remainder of the race. The longest time it froze was nearly 5 minutes! I decided to muck my way through it and make a 2.0-2.5W/kg ride.

    • Neil Rushby says:

so sorry about that, its soooooo frustrating! what you report has never actually happened to me, as whenever i’ve glitched/dropped out, as long as i keep on riding, it always puts me back into the race somewhere near where i would have been. But i always download the route beforehand which if i didn’t maybe then it’d do what happened to you?

  4. Mike Hagen says:

Really looking forward to this race after seeing how well the new drafting worked on Tuesday! Felt relaxed and rocketed off (best I’m able) at the start, finding myself 14th at one point. That wouldn’t last, but I grabbed wheels of passing riders and looked for a group forming that I could stick with. Got on MatthiasHeil’s wheel just a km in: holy cr*p, I’m doing well (doing usually see him until midway). Andy_UP went rocketing by; that was the last I saw of him (except his name in 4th place on the first intermediate split leaderboard–great racer by Andy!). SillySil and boogybill were in the group too. Looking good! About 10 km in, though, we got some separation: Stefan_Schmidt and a few others eased ahead and I didn’t want to blow up with 30 km to go so I didn’t chase, but SillySil and MatthiasHeil and others got dropped behind about then too. I was left riding with a good group: neminenlaedere, owni.d, Mr.Tired, spinjedi, TomVanHooorebeke, and then batbuilder got on a little later. We spent the rest of the race together; a few attacks, a few surges, but the pace was too fast (and the draft too effective) for much to develop. Towards the end, I was watching the group behind that seemed to be slowly gaining, but we were slowly closing on the group ahead! Could get interesting! But no, it came down to a group sprint among the seven of us for 21st, it looked like. I normally go with about 300 or 400 m left. Not this time, not with an effective draft! batbuilder did the lead out, then we all went hard with 100 m to go and we all finished within the same 0.5 second. It was great!

  5. Manuel Lamber SHARK says:

I’ve been complaining since last night, and I was in doubt whether to write or not… on the one hand I’m happy because I worked hard, a race was up my alley, I was traveling between 35/38th place, I reached friends who usually I’m very far ahead and then??? boom boom, 7/8 times knocked out of connection in an instant I was fighting for 55. Luckily I found @MatthiasHeil, we fought until the end, the internet helped me, tired in the head in the end we gave ourselves a good sprint challenge where he arrived first 🤷‍♂️.
The most negative result for 1 year now, 53 with the overall Top 20 gone up in smoke… thanks internet, thanks Rouvy 🤬

    • Nagy Róbert says:

Saw you stopping, a few times not far in front of me, I was sorry for it. Wondered whats happening with the net in Italy…

    • Neil Rushby says:

I really hadn’t noticed you complaining about this Mucker 😏😉. But this had to be an internet thing as it only really happened to you and even though i’ve asked ROUVY several times to try and slow your progress down, i don’t think they would do this to you, just for little old me??? would they???

  6. Karel Soušek says:

Race of the week and this time i was tempted to skip running before, because i would be miserable, but then i sticked with my routine, whatever will happen. Looks like it is more fun with new drafting! Group up to 20 riders sticked together for ~20min, until first mini climbs came, impossible before. Then not sure what happened but we stayed under 10, followed by few more decent attacks and finally only Brian, Gilmad, Baremi and me stayed.

Second group group led by strong and growing Andrew was not far behind, so we had to ride a bit. Good cooperation, but i think i spent most of the time in front. Never mind, rather end up 4th than 8th, right? Exactly that happened, as i burned all matches in few not much clever attacks in final five kilometers, but i like that, keep on dreaming and sometimes magic happen. Excellent racing, thanks everyone who joined!

    • Neil Rushby says:

Hey Karel, you 4 really made the video footage very exciting!! any one of you could have won that with the right timed attack at the end if the other 3 were just not ready for it!! I Think we are all waiting for you to win one but Breers is back racing with us now and Bare is just getting stronger and stronger ( although his max heart rate worries me sometimes!! 😮)

cheers for taking the time to post as you always do as its great to hear from the very tip of the race.

  7. Neil Rushby says:

Just realized i hadn’t left me race report, and it was probably my best race in a long time!! My usual finish place is 52nd/53rd ( the places where i don’t get a bump in points like the guys who finish 4 or 5 places above me 😆)

The chat on the WhatsApp group a few hours before the race was all about tactics. Pretty much everyone agreed that a hard start was needed and hopefully when it settles down, you will be in a large pack!🤞🤞🤞. I did just that and i was in a pack around 35th place, some very strong riders around me, some that I know are myy usual personal challengers so this was great. a few miles in, it was wayyy to hot, hr too high, power over 3.0s even in the draft, this pack was trying to shake the dead weight and i had to let go!

i then end up in a pack of around 4 riders, with Regina and Kaz and i soon realized that those 2 could pull me up the beginning of the climb, I’d go past near the top, crest the hill with a bit more energy as I’d a few seconds earlier saved some at the bottom of the hill and then keep the momentum up down the other side and drag those guys down the hill with me. Then we’d come to the next little incline and we repeat it! really kept the momentum going really really well. We soon had a few others with us ( kyle being one) and we were in a pack that was around 50th place, every now and then noticing we’d picked someone else up and our chances of a top 50 were getting better and better as we went along. I would purposely drop to the back of the group just to see what our last number was and when at one stage i realized the worst we could do was 50th, I was more than happy to chill there so now it was just about enjoying the ending.

We picked up the very strong pack of El tractor ( there’s my sprint finish win destroyed!! 😂) and rouvy1 who is also a nightmare at the finish, and we all worked really well!

we even caught Mathias and dropped him!!! Mathias!!!! anyway, where was I?

The end was coming up: Anonhemust had gone very early and got the gap he needed so it was left to 7 of us to fight for 44th! I am sure we were all side by side at one point as everyone was trying to get into there preferred sprint position, and as soon as i saw everyone’s power just drop off, i kicked!! 😡quite a bit further out than I’d normally liked but i saw an opportunity and just went for it!🤪 jumped into the lead pulling around 6.0/7.0 and the gap was increasing!!! 😁yes!!!!!😄😄…. oh no…. I’m still 800ft from the end????? 😫🥱El tractor is pulling 9s!!!! 😓he gets me, i try to at least stay in his draft and just stick to it and come in behind him, just in front of Rouvy1! Phew!!!!😥🤢

fantastic race and got some nice points for a change! thanks for the racing

I loved that sprint, was hesitating when to go (was even a bit nervous :p) , I saw you took a bit of distance and I just gave it all…..for victory! 🙂
