|So to tonight’s race! One of the hill climbs from the la Vuelta 2023 challenge, but nothing in the red so not too bad…. for a Thursday night anyway. 61 of you wonderful people decided to join us on the start line, ensuring that we had a top 20 mention night! Top of the pile came German powerhouse “Simon_Hahnenbruch” with top places Spanish GURE rider “11_GURE_EDU” just 35 seconds behind in 2nd. Another almost identical gap back to American rider “nelsonsnyder” who claims the bronze.

6seconds later Czech rider “Karel_sousek” powered overthe line in 4th, then quite a gap before Canadian rider “anatos” crossed the line in 5th, just in front of 6th placed French rider “pasjordi60”. We then have Polish rider “krisskinder” in 7th with a nice gap to Belgium rider “quicknik80” who just beat the Dane “Grochang” who finished 9th. Germany book ended the top 10 with “Stefan793” coming over the line 6mins and 24 seconds behind his fellow contryman winner.

11th place is awarded to “leonelcunha” , 12th to “RuudBaars” and 13th to “tranberg” who all came in under 10 minutes behind 1st place. strong climbing guys!

14th came “hj2010”, 15th “lrollin” and 16th “robse3011” with just over a minute between them all, then over a minute later comes “Stefan_Smit” in 17th, closely followed by Spanish rider “Batllator”. Just over 30 seconds later comes “chorus” to claim 19th, then the final mention goes to “MatthiasHeil” who really wasn’t far off 19th to be honest!

Tonight was a first run of what we are calling the 2 races in 1 race,,, erm… race! (We will work on the title!) If you see anything in brackets in the Main Race heading on ROUVY, then you will come to know that the item in brackets is what the “other” race is, inside the normal race. So you can still go flat out and get mentioned here as per usual, but if you are thinking you could just do to train or just not feeling a maximum effort, then just do the target in the bracket. Tonight’s was (Z4HR) which works out as : ZONE 4 HEART RATE. rules in the blog attached:

TOP 5 PLACES IN THE ZONE 4 HEART RATE RACE WITHIN THE RACE:

1ST PLACE : BERTY-BASSETT6 (20TH OVERALL) 49 SECONDS ONLY IN ZONE 5.
2ND PLACE: KYLOFSKI (31ST OVERALL) 6 SECONDS ONLY IN ZONE 5.
3RD PLACE: ANDY_UP (43RD OVERALL) ZERO SECONDS IN ZONE 5!!
4TH PLACE: S.LUDFORD (44TH OVERALL) 36 SECONDS ONLY IN ZONE 5
5TH PLACE: MUCKER1974 (47TH OVERALL) 24 SECONDS ONLY IN ZONE 5.

Well done guys, those were very consistent endurance training efforts whilst also getting a challenge route completed!

Can we just please remind everyone to take a look at the blog below that explains the rules that are coming in next month as we had a lot of new names tonight and we don’t want those guys to miss out on getting a mention!

chose to do the zone4 heart rate endurance training race tonight as long hill climbs aren’t really my bag! felt really good but lost a good 2 minutes at the start by taking it too slowly to get to the 142ish bpms i wanted to focus on. I will do better next time. But it was a really nice effort really and had the company of Roy for most of the climb as well. Really enjoyed that.

We do regular Sunday rides at Z4 so I had a couple of ideas I thought would help with this Muckers team HR race within a race. A long 25 minute warm up in Z2 and Z3 building up to low Z4 5 minutes before the start, theory being my heart would be very comfortable with the power output and allow a power increase without too much stress – this ‘sort of’ worked but I am no wiser than knowing if no warm up Z1 to Z4 in 3 seconds would have been better – but at least it kept my brain occupied. Played a bit with cadence too, reduced my normal race cadence (100rpm) to 90rpm with some success but the power required to turn 80rpm made my HR go up … again, did I learn anything, not sure. Actually enjoyed this activity, thanks for keeping the indoor experience varied and interesting Muckers.

In tonight’s race, I found myself at a crossroads: should I go all-out racing like a speed demon or take the leisurely route? Well, I chose to embrace the leisurely side of things. You see, there were these strict rules insisting on staying in the elusive Zone 4 and keeping our heartbeats below the ominous 142 BPM mark; otherwise, we risked facing the dreaded disqualification monster.

Off I pedaled, accompanied by the not-so-secret agents of “S.Ludford” and “rogersTrainer.” We were having a jolly time until we were suddenly ambushed by the speedster extraordinaire, “Denny44.”

As we approached the treacherous slopes of the main climb, we decided to play it safe, keeping our pace between 3.1 – 3.2 W/KG and our heart rates hovering between 137 – 141 BPM. Along the way, we rode past “Squalo_delle_Alpi” and “TomBuilder.” But then, “Denny44” had an epiphany and cranked up the pedal power to a whopping 3.8 – 3.9 W/KG. I couldn’t help but wonder if “Denny44” was secretly a superhero, but I seriously doubted he could keep up that kind of power within Zone 4.

The real struggle began as I desperately tried to keep my heart rate from going wild. I decided to let “Denny44” go on his merry way. Miraculously, I passed “mareckii” and, against all odds, managed to cross the finish line just over 1 hour later, still firmly entrenched in Zone 4. I did flirt with Zone 5 for a mere 6 seconds, but hey, who’s counting? In the end, I snagged the 31st spot.

It was a wild, rollercoaster of a race that demanded some serious heart rate management skills. Hats off to my fellow Muckers for making it such a hilarious adventure! 🚴‍♂️😄

very interesting ! had the plan of let hr drop by doing nothing , fast start of line then coast the draft as hr dropped again , would have worked if it wasn’t for that pesky lack of oxygen . too fast too long so when I slowed hr kept going up and up even though I wasn’t pedalling , ( owe Jeff a pint next / first time I see him !) after that I sort of knew that low cadence means low hr so at times I was only doing 55ish and relying on legs , apart from when a blue shirt came pass and I forgot what I was doing and saw hr soaring up again I was riding with hr 130 ish to allow some wiggle room enjoyed the experiment and I dare say it done me good not to be flat out for a change ( pleasant feeling to wake up Friday morning to hear the birds singing rather than the legs screeching ) thanks for organising

In today’s race there was a lot to do! The first part of the route unexpectedly with small folds which knocked out a bit of rhythm :). The second part, although not in red, but you could burn your leg. The plan was for an even and calm ride with guarding the position, but a little leg was missing and it was rather a ride with the least loss to the finish line. Congratulationse for all who reached the finish line.

Yesterday I arrived from work at 7.40pm, run to set up the race, run to get dressed… result mounted on the bike 4 minutes from the start with the heart rate monitor just washed but with the heart rate monitor in another room… luckily not it was the championship 😜.
Returning to the race, it was beautiful, but 600 d+ in the last 7/8 km could be felt in my legs 😬.
Special thanks to rogersteiner, you gave me an incentive to consistently finish the race, then I got caught up in the final sprint but even if I finished in front, for me your work was 🔝.
Thanks also to Kyle who when he caught me seemed to want to pull me by the hair but after a while I had to leave.
Well done to all my friends, there were so many of us today too 💪

61 starters? Nice! Did (low) zone 4 HR ride. My plan was to try and find a group where I could stay in the draft. This plan worked out very nice, as I gained a nice advantage over Steven Ludford, who I considered to be my main rival in this Z4 HR race. On the climb, he came closer, meter by meter, but the gap was big enough. in the end he came close, but I kept my cool and he crossed the line 4 seconds behind me.

Thanks Neil for the double exclamation marks in my Z4 Race result. Proud I can be that disciplined.

  8. Batllator says:

    Grate race guys.
Thanks a lot Muckers for the organitzation and such a cool report. And thank you for the mention, it was my goal in this race:)
I plan to be in the top 20 so I tried to be in good position at the start of the hill. At this point we were a group of 5 riders but I felt very good at climbing so I could get the group Infront where Mathiasheil and Chorus where collaborating well. My top 20th goal seemed to be done then I tried to give it all to catch Stefan_Smit but he was too strong untill the end line. Finally 18th. Thanks again for doing the competition funnier
