MUCKERS THURSDAY RACE NIGHT. 14/12/23

RACE 6 OF 13 RACES IN DECEMBER.

ROUVY Route Used: Three Valley Lake from Sicamous | Canada | 30.54 miles | 1079ft climbing

90 Registered | 72 Starters | 62 Finishers | 10 DNF | 18 DNS

Nearly half way into the December championship and we still have a very decent 72 riders on the start line for a 30 mile race that is all gradually uphill, with a few little steeper hills at the end just to finish you off! For quite a long route, 10 DNFs isn’t too bad at all! Well done to the 62 that persevered all the way to the end.

So who gets tonight’s special mentions from the top 20?? well, with only 3 NEDs, here’s the 17 names that are now allowed to go and buy a special mention T-Shirt in your chosen language! 😉 Championship leader “karel_sousek” puts in another amazing effort to increase his lead, especially as the next 5 riders to get mentions, aren’t in the championship top 10 before this race started! They are “breers33”, “luca_ma”, “Alieno79” “IvanSagan86” and “A2-448-JAMES-ROBINSON”. You’ll have to scroll down to the championship table tosee if any of these strong riders have now entered the top 10 or not???

We have to wait to 9th place to get our second top 10 rider to finish and that’s the very strong and consistent “Stefan_Smit”, but then we have 2 more riders not featured in the top 10 of the championship finishing with “A2-630-ANTONNIO-STEDILE” in 10th and “m-forby” in 11th, before 2nd place in the championship “lrollin” pops over the line in 12th. I wonder if he’s now lost his 2nd place???

13th to 20th are now separated by just 33 seconds, with some very strong riders filling out the places. Names like “Stefan793”, “Dogma65HUN64”, “RocketRoy”, “s.cata”, “Grep.” and “boogybill70”. Well done to you all for getting in this top very competitive top 20!

Final mention goes to the only Muckers Worldwide Team Rider to get into the top 20 and that was “nielsbrynnum” with a great ride to get into 17th place! Well done, especially as your nearest teammate was 7 places back in 25th! Strong ride Mucker!

Next race is Sunday! Link below:

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

tough race and its now getting hard to move places in the championship! moved up 1 place but that was after a super tough effort that was meant to be 3.0 at the front of the group for a nice group ride. found you had to do 3.0 in the draft and that ended up just a touch too much for me in the end and i finally got spat out the back! Tom slowed for me and once id had 2 minutes recovery, i was able to get back on it and we finished quite strongly. well done everyone, i now need some DNFs/DNSs from those guys around me now to move up as everyone around me is pretty much stronger!

    • Silvia says:

No worries, I’ll help you. I have to play a tennismatch again Sunday, so you’ll get my DNF or DNS, depending on if I join for a while as a warmup for my match 🤷‍♀️

  2. Silvia says:

Found a nice place in a group of 4 (non-Mucker-jerseys, yet?) Per soderberg Stephen Bellio Hellcat2020 and rkolman for a while. Then I spotted a group of 3 Muckers Chak Cheung Christophe Glauser 🇨🇭(SwissChris69) Squalo delle Alpi lamber 200 m away. That blue looked so attractive I just had to get there 😉. Finally reached them and rode together for a while. Then at each hill we lost 1 Mucker (sorry to split you up 😱) and I was back in the group I started only 3 places further. Passed Matthias Heil (again like last week 🤣) along the way, but he didn’t want to join 😭. Felt a bit like I did a lot of the work in this group, so I gave it all on the last hill and came in 1st at place 32 😎. Great race guys 💪👍

  3. lrollin says:

To be honest, probably my worst virtual race psychologically. From the start, I didn’t feel much for this race. During the warm-up, I was tired, with a sore throat, and feeling pretty down due to family issues. I still tried to start and stay with the lead group for the first 20 kilometers. But after that, it was a free fall. No more strength, no more motivation. Towards the very end, I let Stephan_Smit’s group go. I knew I was losing the second place in the overall standings, but I was too drained. I slightly improved my FTP on Rouvy, but terrible sensations and feelings that don’t encourage me to continue the championship. I think I’ve been overdoing it with the virtual races in recent weeks. I did another race on Sunday after the Ventoux climb; I think at 50 years old, it’s not very reasonable. The Muckers challenges are great but push some of us, like me, a bit too far. We don’t all have the same age and physical abilities, and it’s hard to compete with people who sometimes have over 350 watts of FTP.

    • Neil Rushby says:

hi, i messaged you for a chat as the last thing we want is anyone feeling this way after a Muckers race. Please just use them as and how you want to, its all about the participation, the championship table is just an extra incentive to keep you coming back and awarding those that do, even if they do a recovery or zone ride. take care mucker.

  4. luca_ma says:

Very hard race, crazy start. After 2 weeks of, on the US diet and flight home I was glad to stay in draft. Legs felt better then expected. Few attacks then survided, but then we were dropped with breers32. I was not panicking as he is one of the strongs, but we did not work well, not sure if he did not want, or if it was just looking like that on Rouvy, still not sure if what Rouvy shows is what is really happening…
But still we catched Alieno79, seeing Procat not working with karel_sousek on the front so I hoped we are still good enough to catch them, but the collaboration got even worse. We lost Alieno and breers stopped changing at the front. I was just dead, so settled for 4th, wanted to finish on the limit I was already riding on, knowing he will attack after saving in a draft.
    Anyway great racing, thanks all!

  5. Rieger Thomas says:

I learned that 2-3 races a week put too much pressure on my body and and do not really recover and can fully supercompensat. So i was glad to join the Muckers 3w train and tried to lead as much as I can and stay in Z4. Was as very nice ride surrounded by light blue and a to be a part of a team and an spirit that is more than just that!

  6. Manuel lamber says:

Long and intense race, as I like them or at least I think. Nice start but I already know that I won’t be able to hold 25th position for long, in fact after a few km important names from our challenges begin to parade.
I find myself with two friends SwissChris69 and Chak and given the previous race an excellent collaboration begins, nice team. As the kilometers passed, I saw the legendary SillySiNL approaching, followed by its small group of 4/5 runners. I thought we were able to keep up but little by little our trio broke up. When I saw Chak give up, in the last two climbs I gave everything to recover, and this time compared to the previous race I also recovered from Chris but not from the other group. Now we have fewer participants but the level is still very high… congratulations to everyone.

  7. Mike Hagen says:

Not feeling too energetic before the race, not feeling like I’d have good legs, but decided to try a hot start and see how things developed. Sometimes things just click once one gets going, and the legs are there. But, nope, not one of those times. Got the hot start I wanted, found myself in a huge group of 15 – 18 riders. It was awesome! A lot of folk content to dial back a fraction and wait for the more significant ramps and climbing in the last 15 km, maybe? That first bigger climb came, and I was gapped. Had a choice: work my tail off, get back on, then get dropped on the next climb (and the one after that), or look back. I looked back. Chorus was there, about 70 m back, riding with teamojo. So I eased. After they caught up, Chorus and I, Muckers both, tried to dump the unaffiliated teamojo. We tried various things, got a small gap a couple of times, but teamojo wasn’t having it; he’d get back on. Finally, a few km to go, I was getting apprehensive about sprinting with those two, and thought I should get away. Almost pulled Chorus away one more time, but he couldn’t hold and ended up with teamojo again about 100 m back. Then suddenly teamojo was on my wheel! Another surge then, hoping teamojo had spent everything to catch me and had nothing left, which was the case as I got away on the last hill and the downhill to the finish. Sorry to leave Chorus behind. But nice to try team tactics. Sometimes they work, but, unfortunately, sometimes they don’t.

This is my second month of racing, my first “full” month where I should be able to attend most of the December races – and I am probably like most others quite eager and ambitious with this indoor-season efforts 🔥.
3 races per week, and many also ride (lower zone work) on the off-days make the Dec. Championship a fatigue management effort.

I am certainly feeling the fatigue myself, and tonite I knew my legs were not on the top of their game so aimed to join the 3w/kg group and enjoy that, not trying to chase “the next position up”. Also, in terms of the Dec.Championship consistency is greatly rewarded, more rewarded compared to 50th or 30th place.

Found the group and got established, taking turns up front and the km´s flew past. A few riders there was no draft from, I hope I provided some atleast 🚴‍♂️. Once the route starting to become more undulating I struggled a little to maintain consistent speed (relative to the group) and I suspect it might be a weight issue, being on the heavier side myself. Eventually I broke away from the group without that as a goal, and found myself with Denny44 increasing the distance. On the final ascent he solidly pulled away and I didnt have much more to give, so simply dialed back and rolled over the finish line at idle (no need to create even more fatigue for no change in standing…🤣 )

Looking forward to next effort Sunday – see you all there!

BTW – Regarding my comment about “a few riders gave no draft” I mean like a Rouvy bug, no draft bar/power saving was displayed. I dont ever expect all to do work up front due to our capabilities / intent for the specific race cover a rather large range 🤗. Heck, in some group settings I´d be the one back tailing, hanging on for my dear life 🤣

Anyways, it is Sunday morning, about 1hr untill race start and my bowl of oats (porridge) have been consumed… See you all there 🥳

Calibration issues on this race. Warmed up on the Obergesteln Swiss Alps with no problems and normal data. This race started and I quickly sensed something wasn’t right, it was too easy, 3.0w/kg felt like a 2.0w/kg effort and I was very low Z3 Heart Zone, decided to ride at the back of my group and allow them to finish ahead. Tested some sprints for fun, I expected to see inaccurate sprint watts but they were at my expected maximum so that added to my confusion. I gave up positions towards the end and was also hoping to let skripnit and LaulauWS come past but freewheeled down that last hill too fast. Did the Snowbird route afterwards and all seemed correct again so time to investigate further and change all Power Meter/ HR Meter batteries.
    Two notes from this.
    1. By riding with regular riders on these Muckers races you instantly know when something isn’t quite right.
    2. You realise how easily people can turn up with poorly calibrated trainers and think they are in great form, there were moments where I genuinely wondered if I’d discovered the perfect warm up and food fueling strategy … Fool. I felt so fresh and strong.
    Race stats: Age : 56, Weight : 95kg, IF=0.933*
    Averages : 113bpm, 252w*, 2.66w/kg*
incorrect data* (felt like 200w 2.0w/kg)

I have to contribute to Irollings perspectives and suffering, this is draining my muscles and taking the fun out of racing for me. I like to load up to one hard race per week which suits my 48 years old body just fin. See you all to Sundays event, I’m going for at recovery session🚴🏼‍♂️😌

Brilliant fun as always, joined the Muckers 3.0w/kg peloton eventually after a slow start. Must have been about 10riders at the start, but gradually people lost the draft and dropped back, found it really tough keeping up, and must admit I did zero pulling at the front, leaving it to the stronger riders in the group. Knew I would be tough keeping up when we reached the climbs, and the peloton dispersed.A very hard ride, and thanks to the organisers 👍

I got a mention even though I wasn’t in the top 20, thanks Neil :). I know, not by name but a mention is a mention 🙂
Regarding the race, tough, since I also race on wednesday in another league, but I think it is for everybody to listen to their body and just max out the effort. Sometimes you have great days, sometimes your legs are worthless, same with real riders.
I love the fact that there are so many races, so you can make it as tough as you want. Thx for organising them all.
    See you tomorrow

hahaha, a mention without a mention! i like it!! The reason for a month long championship was to allow for any glitches and or family commitments stopping you getting a result, or joining in. So to award participation. I’m now seeing that some riders see “championship” and just go flat out no matter how they are actually feeling. a 13 race championship is definitely more about pacing yourself, especially if you feel you might get on them all. interesting comments.

Heavyweights on startlist promised lot of pain and fun. I was ready after little Rouvy workout before. Big group up to 10 riders formed, with Procat playing cat and mouse game with rest of us. Gladly we know him, so most did not care. However he “kindly” provided draft from time to time and this divided our group further.
I was sticking with Alieno, who is great pacer, and Brian mostly. Few splits and rejoins. Then our group reduced even more, first me and Alieno, then after one lucky draft i stayed only with Procat. Now what? I imagined im alone in breakaway and pushed full out till the end. It was right tactic as Procat did not cooperate and group behind was very strong. With great legs i could hold it and with best watts this year i finished strongly. Top race, thank you all who joined and made that excitement!

I’m sorry if I sounded a bit grumpy the other day it wasn’t my intention, on the contrary. This was a personal reminder not to overtrain and a learning experience how I can train for my goals and have fun cycling with you guys. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.🙏

    • HalAir says:

Mads – me too, I am also here to have fun, push myself, fail, learn and improve, and some days that specifically = recovery efforts 💥

      • Mads Grosen says:

        😊👍

        • Neil Rushby says:

cheers guys. i was starting to get a bit worried I’d gone too far with the December championship after reading so many “fatigue” comments. it really wasn’t my intention to break you all 😯. i was trying to keep everyone as interested as possible over the month of December when generally training goes a little out of the window. please just use the races as and how you want to.
