MUCKERS 2025 SEPTEMBER CHAMPIONSHIP RACE 2.
ROUTE AND RACE DETAILS:
Gernika-Lumo | Spain | 23.82 miles | 2,881 ft. climbing!
I need to repeat what i wrote on Stava, OMG what a tough route!! We really do race the stupid tough routes on a Muckers Championship Race! Remember it’s not totally intentional, we use what challenge routes we can, but as we’ve always used the “easier” routes on Tuesdays, we are left with the routes that fit between easy and Sunday hill climbs! This one was just 120ft away from our happy 3000ft minimum for a Sunday climb. so was always going to be a tough race!
So, well done to everyone that finished! It’s on nights like this, in the Muckers shed, i feel horrible for removing riders who rode for well over an hour but with no heart rate data being transmitted.. But rules are rules so lets check the numbers and remove those that don’t comply with the 3 rules. I’ve just watched the last rider finish the “later-on” race, so at 21:24 its time to close the event. 92 riders set a time with 77 left after the 3 rules applied.

TO FINISH OFF:
First i obviously have to address the overwhelming response to last weeks blog. Thank you so much for the comments and the suggestions!
I have definitely decided to change things next year. We will have the “Later-on” race on a Wednesday at the same time as the Thursday one at 19:30 UK. Then on a Thursday i can get on with the blog a lot earlier and more importantly, get it finished earlier. If we have one of those rare nights where the Thursday races glitched or a lot of people couldn’t get onto the main race at 18:30, i will do an emergency re run on the Friday at the same time of the main race. But this will only be if we have to do it. I don’t expect you to comment, but i think we all can admit that leaving the blog till Saturday morning, or once a month will leave it less likely to get any comments, or less raw comments as you are still “feeling” it on a Thursday night and Friday morning/afternoon aren’t you.
Still amazed with registered numbers as its only September. 128 for the main race tonight and i think it showed 80 had actually joined. 80 on a route like this! Its looking like we are going to have a competitive end to the year! Thanks to you lot.
Back to this months championship, looks like we have a top 2 with no Ballast with the 2 guys just behind with the most! If the top 2 don’t slip up, one of them will win, but also keep a close eye on TijsV in 3rd, he’s super strong and only has 2.5% ballast so he’s also a contender! Should get very interesting over the next 2 races!
That all folks, thanks as per usual to you all for the support, and especially those that have read this to the very end. appreciate it.
Mucker1974

phew! what a route. I’m still about 25% away from being at my best, so paced the start and was happy with the first climb. I could see the rider behind was finishing the first climb at around 3.0 and as i was on my own i thought i’d back off so we just crested the top together and we could team up on the downhill . He came past me, back right off to 0.5w/kg and i pulled in front of him and waited for him to come back past so we could go for it… he stayed in my draft just doing 0.5w/kg. what a shame, but i wasn’t dragging him all the way down, so the next little flat part, i just opened up the gap so he wasnt in my draft anymore. (he did catch me much later on the last climb but lets not get too caught up in that fact please lol) But it is funny how at the time it really annoys you.
i was struggling on the last climb, and as LinV came past (she must have had a slow start?) i jumped on her wheel just to see how long i could last and hopefully make “4worldpeace” stop putting the pressure on just for a little bit! we hit the last climb and i couldn’t stay so i spent that last 5 mins of climbing just controlling the gap behind.
crossed the line and i was spent! only 61st as well in the race! but im now 50th in the GC. can i improve again next week?? lets see…..
With tough races like this, I always start a little bit carefully because I’m always afraid of blowing up halfway and I really, really hate that feeling of being completely drained when you still have an hour to go :).
me too! definitely not a route for a rocket start and see how long you can stay with the front group is it. But i only ever see you if i do that, so for you to come past near the end, was a bit of a shock and i just presumed late start. Top of your category though, but i think i read you are not back till next month? was that you?
That *was* a tough course. Compounded by my wheel set; I choose the 4-spokes. I knew they would not help me on the finish climb, but their aero advantage would provide a cushion before then. Which is kind of how it worked. Got in with Chak, Stu (bikeanddogtrips), uffzynda, and MatthiasHeil at the bottom of the middle climb. Matthias fell back, Stu and uffzynda pulled ahead, but I stuck with Chak. Chak has really gotten stronger the past few months. At the top of the middle climb, Stu was waiting. He’d decided that waiting a few seconds to descend with a couple of others would overall be faster. I was happy to work the downhill and let those two sit in my slipstream, though there was also a fair bit of shooting going on. By the end of the descent we’d closed the gap on uffzynda and Stefan_Schmidt, and I could see EddyDomino, ludwigdb and Andy_UP not far ahead. But the finish climb; well, my wheels were not kind. I was able to keep Chak in sight, but was overhauled by jaromirb and atekbailey. At least I stayed ahead of fellow A5er MNHROUVY! Kudos to all that finished.
i couldnt decide on wheels for the day so plumped in the middle with the 800s. I was so far off it i really should have gone for the lightweights as i did feel i was climbing a hell of a lot more than going downhill or on a flat lol.. maybe i should tilt my bike up at the back to help whilst i’m trying to get some kinda speed back into the legs….
Great to see you back up there already mucker, after a crash as well and not a 2 week vacation! gives me hope
Another nightmare route for this night, on the paper it’s seems with many green part but in many km of that the downhill result with little % and I must to push often. I don’t find a right group to ride together and my race it was different in 3 times. At the end I saw Kyle near me, and this result a perfect reason to push all until the end line….
I work hard but at the end I did a good vantage of minutes but the point in A8 result not very high.
Next week will be a surprise for my cat., therefore a big congratulations to everybody finish this hard route.
👋💪🦈
yes, tough route but it was good seeing kyle in the mix wasn’t it!
Due to evening commitments, I had to jump into the race early morning before work. I thought I’d take it easy. I started my warm-up and saw RaTim already at the start and there were only two of us. So I realized it wouldn’t be easy 🙂 Tomas supported me, and I tried to ride without disappointing him and stay with him as long as possible. Before the last hills, Tomas gave me a thumb up and did a quick sprint up. I saw over 4w/kg, and I rode at my own pace. Good effort. I beat my ETA by 10 minutes.
i’m glad we do the extra time slots as it does allow people to at least finish the route and get some points. But yeah, if i’d have got to the start line with a “take it easy” in mind and then saw RaTim…. 😲😂 But he’s a good Mucker and will see effort in others and help. If he see’s no effort, he’s gone.. and rightly so. Great time set, i was just a bit behind but i had alot more draft so well done!
yes, I am learning that when Tomas gives a thumbs up he is saying bye bye. No, you didn’t see me in this hard race..I have been outside practicing jumping on and off my bije without embarrassing myself too much. nice time of the year to still be outside a bit..cheers
What a brutal return to racing last night in the Muckers Championship! Route: Gernika-Lumo, Spain | 23.82 miles | 2,881 ft climbing! It was my first Muckers race in ages. Between the ridiculously warm summer here in the UK and a holiday in Cyprus, the turbo in the garage has been gathering dust. So, for my first ride in over a month, I naturally picked this absolute monster of a course. 😂 It was a killer, but I was hanging on for dear life! Managed to hold 64th place at around 3.1 \text{ w/kg}, and that final, long descent nearly sent my heart rate through the roof! A massive shout-out to Mucker1974 and Squalo_delle_Alpi for pulling me along and keeping me motivated. Great to be back in the saddle! Now that the weather is finally cooling down, I’ll see you all on Tuesday
Make some noise! Tune of the week with Muckers fun. I was ready after enchiladas suizas for lunch and running warm up. Very tough route with two three long climbs. They were not that steep, but steady tempo in front made gaps soon. Then Alieno left and we established smaller group of chasers. Tijs, Baremi, krisskinder and Simon with us.
Later on we dropped krisskinder in descent, when Tijs attacked into corners, that hurted. We continued into final tricky section with steep climb. No differences, everyone on the limit, Baremi going for silver and very tiny difference between rest of us. Thank you all who joined us!
Great to see you back but as per the competitive spirt we have on these races, i was praying you’d blow up lol. But i was struggling anyway so when you did back off, i was already in my own struggles so yeah, erm, well done!!
Going back to the route, it was tough but at least we got a bit of a breather in the middle, and with both climbs being slightly different in angle, it was quite an interesting route all things considered. hopefully see you next week.
Really enjoyed this race on a brilliant basque parcours … First Niels managed to completely split the front group with a nasty pull 🥵, then I rode together with Morten 💪🏻 a long way catching a few dropped riders up front including Badeskum who then did a really good leadout 👍🏻 … but then we turned left away from the main road … and you just know you are in trouble when you hit the last steep wall of 10-20% on a small local road and start to wonder WHY you are doing this – normally i can push through but tonight I just felt like putting it in the small chainring trying to roll to the finish line in slow motion losing the 3 places I had just gained in the previous attack 😂
Thanx for a fun race guys 👍🏻
thanks Hans, its always great to hear how it went up at the sharp end!
I really enjoyed this race. The long uphills and long downhills made for a dynamic race. Recently, I discovered that I can make a big difference on the downhills. Typically, I get dropped on uphills and pass people on downhills, which typically results in a lot of solo work. Today, I found a kindred spirit in Jendor.net. He followed when I attacked at the top of the long downhill, and we worked together to catch 3 or 4 riders on the way down. We then traded places all the way to the finish.
Nice one Chuck! great to hear from you. We’ve always said sometimes it really doesn’t matter how many riders we have on the start line, if you have 1 or 2 riders around you, then you have a race! we are just really lucky/fortunate that we get the numbers we do so we always have an opportunity for a race wherever you are in the field! And can you imagine how boring this route would have been with no competition! cheers again Mucker!
