MUCKERS NOVEMBER CHAMPIONSHIP. RACE 3. 16/11/23

ROUVY Route Used: Lavender Fields in Provence | France | 21.13 miles | 921.92 ft.

162 Registered | 123 Starters | 98 Finishers | 25 DNF | 39 DNS

Well over 100 on the start line!! Wow!! This was going to be one epic Championship night ( As long as we didn’t glitch!) and I was totally immersed in the battles on the live stream while having my own personal battles, it was all just fantastic! Great little route as well with a slight climb first half, then downhill 2nd half, but with some little kickers to attack. I really hope everyone had a great race.

“Dennis_R” claimed top spot tonight just 7 seconds in front of “luca_ma” We then have an 18 second gap to the 5 way fight for third that was won by “breers33” , with “IvanSagan86” in 4th, “TOR68” in 5th, “hinsbergen” in 6th and “karel_sousek” in 7th.

Silence at the finish line for 1 minute & 25 seconds then we have a blur of 9 riders separated by only 10 seconds fighting for 8th place! well done “pasjordi60” for the sprint win, with “A2-448-JAMES-ROBINSON” claiming 9th, “FlyingSkywalker” 10th, “lrollin”11th, Top Mucker “Grochang” in 12th, “Stefan793” in 13th, Mucker “nielsbrynnum” in 14th then finally in 15th “Karol-ESZ”.

16th and in a little bit of no-mans-land comes “Stefan_Smit” then 20 seconds later we have a 3 way sprint won by “s.p” in 17th, “Rocket996” in 18th and his team mate “CerveloKevin” in 19th. “Gazinho” gets a well deserved 20th for the Muckers, just in front of “Grep.” for 21st and “yayarecki” in 22nd.

we then have 3 Muckers rounding out the top 25 ( top 25 tonight due to over 100 on the start line) with “MikeHagen” getting 23rd, “DonJulio” 24th and final mention to “Batbuilder” in 25th place!

Well done and we have some new mentions in there tonight so i hope you take the opportunity to pop over to the shop and treat yourself to a special mention T-Shirt to celebrate this momentous achievement! These purchases really do keep the site going and thank you to all those who have helped us out buy making a purchase or two, it really means a lot, but also, they really are quality products and we really hope you are happy with them.

Cheers everyone and please pop a comment on to let us know how the race went from your perspective. ( full championship table with the next blog which includes the late versions of this race so keep an eye out over the next few days for that)

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

Thought id glitched again at the start!!! I set off hard but my avatar didn’t move for about 5 seconds then it finally started to go, but i was in around 85th place ( I say around as i cant really see my tiny phone screen at the moment due to being too scared to switch back to my iPad in case of glitches, but it was eighty something!) Anyway, the chat had been a bit strange before hand, going from who wants a draft, and eventually settling on human centipedes but I digress….. Chorus’s offer of a draft was not gonna be left hanging so I quickly said yes but could we do the first half ( the climb) at around 3.0 so I didn’t go too hard too soon and hopefully have some left for the little kickers on the 2nd half of the race? he agreed and we were set.

set off like i did and he was a good 20 places in front so I went into 3.5s and he dropped off until we met up and we got to it. one by one we slowly picked riders off and when the downhill and kickers started I felt just right! able to get out the saddle and hit 6.0s then recover on the downhill part and still in someone’s draft and keeping a nice pace going. I could Just make out I was in the 50 somethings near the end and I was more than happy with this, I was able to put a bit more in at the finish, but didn’t really have a sprint in me as I was already topping out so came over the line just behind Chorus who pretty much took all the wind for me tonight but I still needed to be in zone 7 heart rate just to stay there! What a rider and what a team mate.

    • Chorus says:

Thanks Neil for your words, and to the Muckers that we have been seeing in the race, I think you gave your best today.

  2. Steven Ludford says:

I was a ‘two timer’ tonight. Planned to ride with some Mucker teammates but saw my Farnham teammates first, as I have shared many more beers with gunnera and Hoppytherocket I decided to ride with them, gunnera had started stronger but we bridged to him in the early miles. It was difficult to see if we were still together in big groups as the nearby list wasn’t big enough, so we lost gunnera before ending up in a fast group including Tomlerieger, wurstrolle_81, turnvater7, Dolphwader & Slyfly + a couple more. We ran together for a long distance and I even managed the occasional turn on the front, then the dynamic changed again as we were caught by ‘flying’ Muckers teammates Mucker1974 & Chorus. Now it became a Mucker gang that, despite massive help from Tom, I was struggling to stay with. Luckily, I had gained enough ground to protect my position from behind and rolled home solo satisfied with my time.
    Race stats: Age : 56, Weight : 95kg, IF=0.967
    Averages : 154bpm, 282w, 2.97w/kg.

  3. Lamber Manuel says:

Well what a race guys, just a few months ago every now and then I entered the top 20 or even better, and now??? Now I’m more trained and tonight we won’t go below 49th… what a level my muckers friends.
Nice and tough race at a high pace, good team work with Kyle, SylliSilNL, Chak, SwissChris69 and another small group of friends. It’s a shame that on the penultimate climb I lost the draw and I got distracted for a moment because afterwards I pushed hard for 5 km, perhaps to try to recover but I didn’t succeed, I covered myself from behind but I got within a few seconds of the front… I have to improve my concentration, because at these levels the slightest error turns out to be fatal. Thanks everyone ๐Ÿ’ช

    • Neil Rushby says:

thanks for the comments. It really is hard to get up there now isn’t it! I think i had my best race in a very long time and only reached 52nd, but at least i wasn’t too far away from you tonight…

  4. Silvia says:

Those Muckers really bring out the best in me ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ™. 162 registered, so really hard to get into the top 50. Started fast to get draft from guys passing me and find a nice group. Could hang on a little to my good friends Leonel Cunha and IronSan73 and found a group around place 55. Every hill I had to push hard to stay with the guys and could only draft and try to catch my breath on the downhill. Every hill some rider was dropped or we caught someone, so the group was finally within the top 50 ๐Ÿ˜Ž. Special thanks for the draft of my mean group with Kylofski, Chak, SwissChris69 and Squalo delle Alpi ๐Ÿ™. After a final battle at the finishline with Chak which he won by 0.5 second I was extremely happy with my 47 place ๐Ÿ˜ƒ. I think this was my best race ever, raised my ftp from 215 to 219 ๐Ÿคช. Thanks for this great race Muckers ๐Ÿ‘

  5. Chorus says:

Well Neil, what can I say, the race started with a lot of people around me, about 40th. I didn’t start very fast because I didn’t know how or where you were going. And I started going backwards until I got in touch with you around 80th position.
Then the real fun of today’s race started. I tried to set a pace over 3.0s but I could see it was getting out of hand… but you were still behind me, so I tried to regulate so you were going like a bullet. And so it was, we were catching riders little by little until we got close to the 50th, where we joined up with another group of riders, and from there to the end the whole Muckers peloton.
When I crossed the finish line the app froze, as you said in other races, but it was a scare, after 10 or 12 seconds the coldown screen appeared.
Fantastic race guys, I really enjoyed it.

  6. Mads Grosen says:

What a heroic teammate I got to see tonight. Nielsbrynnum pulled over 6 watts for a very long time to make our group smaller and also to close the gap to BareRemi and FlyingSkywalker who had gained 60 meters with only 4 km to go. Thanks to Nielsbrynnum We caught BareRemi and I had only 14m to FlyingSkywalker, and thought the other guys would help to finish the job. I certainly couldnโ€™t pull any more juice out of my legs. But no one would make the effort and FlyingSkywalker got away. I thought Nielsbrynnum had done himself fatigued, but once again he came back and pulled himself up, making a lead out 600 meters before the finish line. Unfortunately, I couldnโ€™t respond, I just didnโ€™t have anything left to give, but pasjordi60 and BareRemi caught FlyingSkywalker at the very end – well done.
A big shout out for our Danish fellow Mucker Niels, who once again tried to make me shine on these Thursday races๐Ÿ™

  7. Mike Hagen says:

Wow, very competitive field; lots of strong riders all the way down. I’ve decided that an all-out sprint at the start doesn’t really suit me. I feel it’s better to conserve some of my meagre anaerobic power and ration it out during the race. So if I’m somewhere in the 30s just after the start, not to worry; there are lots of strong riders moving up, and lots of wheels to grab for a tow. And that’s how it worked; settled in with a fairly large group jostling for positions 25 to 30 plus or minus. It was good! I planned to watch for leonelcunha coming up, latch onto his wheel like a leach, and hang on with grim persistence as long as I could. But it didn’t work. He never caught us! Instead it was sproutpicker coming through like a runaway train about 7 km to go, leaving chaos in his wake, attacks and counter-attacks, gaps and regrouping. After his passing, our group was shattered; Grazinho, Grep., and yayarecki were ahead of me and tranberg, and a group with hj2010 and Andy_UP was behind. At that point, I felt I could relax and figure out how I was going to outsprint tranberg (ha!). But with about 2 km to go, I noticed DonJulio, neminemlaedere, and batbuilder gaining like, well, bats out of hell; they were only 70 m back! They could see us! I surged. tranberg also recognized the danger, and we were back into the 4 – 4.5 W/kg territory. One km to go, and I surged again, ahead of tranberg; leading him out for the sprint, maybe, but I didn’t care if he beat me, I just wanted to stay ahead of DonJulio’s group. Into the last 500 m, they’re still gaining! 200 m to go, the finish chute visible, I launch my all-out sprint; head roaring, vision fading, gasping for breath, legs going numb, but then tranberg eased onto the screen. No! Not giving up, redoubled, got back ahead, and hit the line with a clear screen, just as four avatars flashed by. Too shaky to check right away, but then saw that I’d pipped tranberg, and that we were a second or so ahead of the chasers. So close! Probably the best 25th placing I’ve ever done. It was so fun! Many thanks to Neil for organizing; we really have a good thing going here.

  8. Torben Adolph says:

This race I agreed with Neil and Chorus to stay at 3.0 from the start, but I felt so good and strong at the racing time began. But boy so many strong riders ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
I needed to put a lot of watts just to get to a 62th place from the start…. Never tried that before. Bug came into a good group with some strong riders and more than halfway I could see Mucker1974 gaining in on me and thought – well lets drop back and we can have a fight at the end.
But this time Neil was too strong for me and afther a short unfocus time he was 50 m ahead. Then it was like whatever I did put into the bike he just keept gaining distance.
I found a small group but it seems like all 4 of us wanted to stay ahead of the group and then slow down and watch each other :-p
I ended up with an avarage 180 bpm in my HR (with a max of 186) so for some strange reason this I almost passed out at the finish line.
What a fun race – don’t care about my position only the fun fights along the route.
Well done all and thanks for a great race ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. Kyle Goodram says:

OMG! 160+ riders registered, a new Mucker record for a race. I mentioned before the race that there was no way I was getting into the top 50 on this route. It’s half uphill and half downhill. So, I was thinking if I could go hard on the uphill and gain some places, then I could hang on for dear life on the downhills. Off we went, starting in 30th position. Awesome! Nope, dropped down to 63rdโ€”what? For the next 10 miles uphill, I tried to gain a few places. I managed to find a brilliant group with “SwissChris69,” “Squalo_delle_Alpi,” “SillySilNL,” and “Chak.” We pulled hard on the uphills and managed to break into the top 50. When we got to the downhill section, I just hung on for dear life. Without this group, I would have ended up 60th again. Sorry, I couldn’t do much on the front on the way down. When we found a few lumps, I stood up and pushed hard just to stay with this awesome group. Rolled over the line in 41st position. Very happy considering we had 98 finishers. These Muckers races are getting stronger and better. Thanks, Muckers! See you next week (as I’m on vacation this weekend).

  10. luca_ma says:

Full gas from the start, finding myself around 30th position. What? One more to get to 20th and crazy all out through the first hill. This finally placed me in the front group. But really, why? I hate these starts…
Than the game begin, with Dennis most active (and apparently the strongest), so my tacktic was stupid simple. Be alert and stay in draft. When we stayd only 2 with Dennis, I tried 2 times to pull a bit, but with his almost pro numbers, I am not able to help him at all. We at least have fun with him testing my abbility to hang on his wheel. Well done mate, but I was on alert. Actually it was my only option to get to the finish fast. There should be sprint, but Dennis put the 10+ w/kg like 700+m from the start, which I was able to match only for a few seconds, so it was pretty clear. Congrats and thanks for a ride ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Batbuilder says:

I try not to get involved in the melee at the start, because its easyto burn out too quickly but after finding myself in 60 odth after a few Km it was time ot put in some effort. There were no real hills to attack on on this course so it was jut get your head down and try and maintain a steady pace and hope that no one can keep up. Unfortunately given the strength of the field this didn’t work – the gaps didn’t close much. Sprout picker charged through the field, there was no way I was keeping up with him. The group of about 5 DonJulio neminemlaedere, Michelleke, Andy_UP and hj2010 spotted Mike Hagen and tranberg in the distance, was theer time to catch them before the line? – Alas no, In the sprint Don Julio put the power on and just got ahead.

  12. Andy_UP says:

So much racers, and strong ones. By closing gaps and bridging to groups I managed to get in a group racing for top30. To do this, I had to break my all time 20min power output. What ‘helped’ to do this was I constantly was gaped 10 to 15m from the group I was in. Mike Hagen, Tranberg, Gazinho and Yayarecki didn’t give me and Vavroch any chance to breath. So just over halfway I was dropped. It’s been long since I was dropped this way. Legs just refused and I hit the wall. A train passed with DonJulio as locomotive but I couldn’t hang on my wagon for long. Did the final part in no man’s land, keeping an eye on the gap behind me. With 1.05 IF, this was a hard race and ending top 25% of the starters, I have to be happy.

For me it very soon became clear that it will be a nice reco-ish ride for me, and no sense to break any limits, or try to catch anyone in front of me ๐Ÿ™‚
Firstly, because the EU qualification football match ended just around the time when this race started (and the stake was, if the national squad will qualify to the EU cahampionship right on this match… they did, and they scored the necessary goal in the 97th minute when I was already on the trainer…) But it turned out forgot to plug in a few not too unnecessary things to eg. the trainer, or switch on the ventillator… I’m very pro… ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€
But okay, I tried to find the little groups that only take the under 3W/kgs, there were a few, thanks to the extreme popularity of the Muckers races.98 at the start..?? Wow! I became the 95th now, but it also included a laptop-restart besides the above mentioned things.
Okay more seriously, the biggest problem now is that a two weeks ago I also caught the good auld COVID, that was really not a funny stuff. Already on this Tuesday in the “race within the race” I realized that my FTP has been dropped cca from 250->230, and it could be felt really nicely there. Now it is the start of the winter, start of the indoor season, let’s see what it will be good for.

I did a small trial of the route prior to the start of the race and despite the first hills were short, I anticipated that they would separate groups right from the beginning. I got off first hill in the front group but got dropped on the second one. I was for short while in no manโ€™s land until the chasing group closed the gap. In the group was my strong ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป fellow ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฐ Grochang and to support him in the championship I tried to pull as much as I could in group. Great race, – despite a lot of ghost riders ๐Ÿ‘ป๐Ÿ˜
