MUCKERS SUNDAY HILL CLIMB! 3/12/23

RACE 1 OF 13 MUCKERS RACES IN DECEMBER.

ROUTE USED: Tour de France 2023 | Col de la Loze | 21.49 miles | 6243ft climbing.

91 REGISTERED | 61 STARTERS | 48 FINISHERS | 13 DNF | 30 DNS |

First race in December and the first in the December championship. We are just running a fun and simple championship this month where basically you all start with 200 points a race (So 2600 points whenever you join in), and every race you attend, we swap that 200 with your finish position. So lowest score wins. Only when we have the final results after the last race, will we then scrutinize the stats to make sure the top 20 have followed our race regulations. We will still be doing these blogs after every race, and if you’re a NED you still won’t get a mention but you won’t be dropped from the scores like we usually do. So make sure we are friends ( on here or Strava) and you use a heart rate monitor.

So, who in the top 20 get todays Special Mentions? We start with “Alan-H” who gets our top mention (surrounded by 3 NEDs) with an awesome effort to achieve an average speed of 14.4mph and complete the whole route in under 90 minutes! British rider “CerveloKevin” get the 2nd mention, getting his WattBike (I mention this as I ride a Wattbike and have often blamed the bike for my rubbish performance, so its obviously not that is it 😂😆😥) up the climb averaging over 13mph, with regular strong Rider “karel_sousek” getting the 3rd mention for this ride!

“RogerDevittori” gets the next mention for a strong ride to 7th, then a 7 minutes gap to a nice spree of riders all trying to finish in under 2 hours from 8th place to 16th, covered by just 8 minutes! Must have been a personal target maybe for these guys? But who gets the mentions for following the Muckers race regulations?? “RocketRoy” with an average speed of 11.5mph does, as does “lrollin” with 11.39mph, “Stefan_Smit” with 11.26mph, “boogybill70” with 11.19mph, “luca_ma” with 11.15mph and “HalAir” with a 10.8mph average that just was just under the 2 hours by 40 seconds! Well done guys!

Last mentions in the top 20? Thankfully its to the top 2 Muckers Worldwide Team Riders who got into the top 20 with “Grochang” just 20 seconds over the 2 hour mark and “El_Tractor” just 1 minute 26 over. Well done Team!! so glad we got into the mentions here.

Well done to all 48 finishers, including 4 women today as well, as this is a great start to the month. Anyone else who joins from now, is already a minimum 139 points behind us as those riders will be given 200 points for this round once they join us! But 13 races is a tough ask so we are all going to miss a few aren’t we over the month????

So, remember, no ones getting bumped this month, but for those in the top 20 who didn’t get a mention, it’ll be because we aren’t friends on ROUVY or Strava so I can’t see your stats, or we are friends but you are not using a HR monitor. get these sorted by the last race and you’ll be included in the final results.

I’ve also decided to award all non-finishers the same points this month, as I have recently found out the leader board on ROUVY doesn’t actually list the riders in order of distance before pulling out, or in any type of order, so everyone who doesn’t finish will get the position of the very last rider in the list. This is to at least try and look after those that glitched out.

Championship table further down so keep scrolling and good luck with the rest of the month.

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

We really have some strong climbers here on the Muckers races. I was focused and averaged my best power for a race/hill climb like this yet I was still second to last at the end! But, its 100% completion so far and I know I will be missing 1 race and possibly 2 others this month depending on some last minute plans, so if I can attend, I need to! Looking forward to Tuesdays Race!

  2. Mads Grosen says:

Thanks Neil og Kyle, you make it so much easy to complete Rouvys challenge when it’s scheduled, even though this was a tough one.
Did HR zone 5 on the first climb and 4 on the second and a fraction in zone 5 at the very end of the climb to hold my 18 position. Stefan_Smit and boogybill70 carried me up on the first mountain 🙏 and on the second I was overtaking by RocketRoy, Luke_vin, Barebanek5, EricYC( who seemed to have some technical problems with his watts?), HalAir(nice pic. on Strava, making your bike with ascent👍) and the last one PietroZanoni, who I did caught up with again but lost the sprint – Well done to everyone who managed to the finish line today 👏 Ps I’m not sure why I stand as N/A on Rouvys list, the only reason I can think of is changing from Kickr Core to a Kickr 4.0 – but everything should be connected right🤷‍♂️

  3. Karel Soušek says:

Another very tough climb for Sun race. Started moderately, knowing today it is about sustaining steady pace. Also same as yesterday, i did not feel much powerful. I was sitting at the end of top10 and would need 10-15w more to get to the group ahead. Closed gap to one or two riders, but top5 was too far. No HR data as device could not connect. Sum it up, solid race, just i feel that freeze outside froze me a bit inside too this week. Kudos to all who finished this climb!

  4. lrollin says:

The first part would have been more than enough.😝 The second part was a bit of a struggle. I don’t know what gear ratios you use, but I have a lot of trouble in sections over 15% with a 36×34.
It’s really for the Muckers challenge that I participate and finish these extremely challenging courses on the home trainer.

  5. HalAir says:

I failed miserably on this ride…!
My intent was to simply let the race go by and enjoy a tempo-like pace to get decent volume in with medium effort, keeping the HR around the 85% area…No warm-up prior to race start so did manage a medium power first 10min….then the urge to GOGOGO came into play… 🔥

Due to the amount of climbing on this route I knew I needed to pace myself in order to not blow up, so balanced around threshold all the way, trying to do minor over-threshold efforts on the steep sections and just at or below on the shallower sections. The prospect of doing that for 2hrs+ was daunting, but the body felt quite nice and breathing was “relaxed” despite decent power output. On the top of the first main ascent I was trying real hard to connect with the two guys ahead of me, but missed them by 30m, so the full descent was done solo, no draft, no help… So let them go and spent the time to recover/prepare for the final, and even steeper, ascent!

I was chasing/being chased, some positions were shuffled around and it the summit came closer and closer..
I also saw EricYC having some serious power issues (17W/kg when he flew past me several times, probably a bug somewhere.

Secured a nice 16th place overall, really happy with that and also got a new Power curve PB for the 60-120min duration, so I might not get proper recovery time in before Tuesday Race Night haha! 👊

Thanks for the race all, my intended “tempo-effort” became a 2hr ride at 93% IF..overtraining is not a thing is it?? 🫠. I think I will sleep deep tonite! Happy recovery all 🤗

  6. Steven Ludford says:

No plan, just complete the race. I struggle to be ready for 08:30 (UK time) and managed to arrive on the start line with 60 seconds to spare, so my warm up was 5 miles at 2.0w/kg in dead last position. Once I felt warm I upped the pace to 2.4-2.6 and gradually picked up a few positions and a very nice final tow from ‘Jeff65’ up to ‘Mucker1974’ before Jeff jumped off the bike. I tried to get a tow off Eric but couldn’t quite hold his wheel. Spent a little while with ‘sunniva’ who was riding very strong, then faded slightly before coming back very strong again towards the finish, impressive ride. My final short partnership was with ‘Andy_UP’, I could tell he was in a world of pain but we aligned to team up on that last long descent and he was able to recover enough to finish the last little ramp ahead of me, I didn’t contest the finish as Andy will probably complete more Championship Races than me so the point may make a difference, to be honest, I think he beat me well anyway. I thought I had selected a small ‘virtual’ gear of 34/34, but, (like the Sani climb) I was still able to spin at 90rpm so I suspect I’ve selected something even easier than a 1:1 ratio.
    Race stats: Age : 56, Weight : 95kg, IF=0.835
    Averages : 141bpm, 236w, 2.50w/kg.

  7. El_Tractor says:

As HalAir I thought everybody would start calm and we would ride a steady pace climb at 75-85% FTP. The hell with that, everybody started like crazy and I followed. For some reason i couldn’t think of anything else but to go strond and follow. I adjusted my goal to ride for top 20. First climb was ok, at the end of the second climb I was really strugling. I saw Grochang at 150m, but never got closer. I had to watch out not to get caught by SwissChris. I gave it all and managed to keep my position. The finish really didn’t have to be much further or Chris got me, for sure. So like HalAir, I ended with a IF of 0.94, so much for easy steady climb. But I reached my newly set goal during the race and proud.
Neil, a special thank you since I love completing challenges with the Muckers

  8. Sunniva says:

Hello, another fantastic ride with the Muckers group, thank you 🙂 I don’t know if I could complete this route alone. Every rider in front of me gave me a little power and motivation.
Will the race next Sunday (Hill Climb Tindevegen 4/13) count towards the challenge Four Climbing Gems? The companion app says that the challenge ends on December 10, 2023 at 01:00.

    • Neil Rushby says:

hi, yes its a bit of a mess isn’t it! i scheduled the race when the website was just showing the weeks left, so i thought i had enough time, but then on the latest release Rouvy changed the remaining time format back to days and i realized it wouldn’t be done in time! i reached out to Rouvy to ask if they could extend the end date by a day but today was the last day i was going to wait for a response and i didn’t get one so i am cancelling it and re arranging for Friday evening. I’m really sorry as i always want to use as many challenge routes as i can for races, and this has been a very rare glitch!

  9. Rocket Roy says:

I put a message out before the race to see if anyone was riding it easy as a training ride. No replies so I set off easy at 200W (3W/Kg). Everyone else seemed to be on it from the start and I found myself in 40th place by the start of the real climb. 15 minutes in and my legs seemed to be in reasonable condition so I got on it myself and managed to ride my way up to 8th position with a hard but sustained effort as other crumbled. What better way to spend a Sunday morning and a great way to prepare for my real life cycling club Christmas lunch. Oh yes, there was lots of food and beer.
