Your First Muckers Race: A Beginner’s Guide

Your First Muckers Race A Beginner's Guide

So, you’ve decided to clip in for your first Muckers race. Welcome to the club! We know that hovering over that “Join Event” button for the first time can bring up a few questions: “Is my tech ready?” “Which race should I choose?” “What happens when the countdown hits zero?”

Relax. You’ve come to the right place. This guide is your official pre-race briefing, your tactical cheat sheet for everything a first-timer needs to know. We’ll cover the gear, our schedule, and the strategies to make your debut a success.

But the most important tip comes directly from our motto: “We take our cycling seriously, but not ourselves”. We are a global gang of pedal-pushers who value participation and shared effort above all else. Your goal isn’t necessarily to win, but to have fun, push your limits, and find your group on the virtual road.

Our arena is ROUVY, an indoor cycling platform renowned for its augmented reality experience that lets us ride real-world routes together. One week we might be tackling the legendary switchbacks of Alpe d’Huez, and the next we could be climbing through the stunning landscapes of Colombia. It’s an immersive experience that we find incredibly engaging and relevant to our outdoor cycling goals.

So let’s get you ready for that start line.

Getting Connected: Your Guide to the Muckerverse

Joining a Muckers race is more than just signing up on ROUVY; it’s about plugging into our vibrant, multi-platform ecosystem. Understanding how these different pieces fit together is the key to getting the full Muckers experience.

Here’s a breakdown of our essential platforms and how they work together:

  • ROUVY: The Stadium. This is where our action happens. All Muckers races and events are hosted on the ROUVY platform. It’s the virtual road where you’ll pedal alongside your fellow Muckers.
  • Muckers Worldwide Website: The Official Clubhouse. You’re here now! This is your central hub for all official information. On this site, you’ll find our detailed race calendar, including route profiles, distances, and elevation. It’s also home to the official rules for our championship series and features our in-depth race reports.
  • Strava: The Personal Trophy Cabinet and Social Feed. Strava is where we share our efforts. By connecting your ROUVY and Strava accounts, your virtual rides are automatically uploaded, allowing you to track your progress and, most importantly, give and receive kudos from the community. We integrate heavily with Strava, and you’ll see many of our race reports and articles are also categorized under “Strava”.
  • YouTube (Inside Cycling World): The Live Broadcast. This is one of the most exciting parts of our ecosystem. Independent channels, most notably Inside Cycling World hosted by our friend Colin, often provide live-streamed commentary for our main races. Hearing a commentator call out your name as you attack on a climb adds a thrilling dimension to the race.
  • Discord & Facebook: The Virtual Pub. If ROUVY is the stadium, these platforms are our post-race pub. The Muckers Discord and Facebook groups are where the real-time community interaction happens. Here you’ll find pre-race banter, tactical discussions, tech support, and post-race debriefs. It’s the best place to ask questions and get to know the personalities behind the avatars.

Building Your Pain Cave: A No-Nonsense Tech Guide for Your First Race

Getting started with virtual cycling can seem daunting. The reality is, you only need a few key pieces of equipment to join us. This section breaks down the essentials, the mandatory items for fair racing, and the nice-to-haves that will elevate your experience.

The Absolute Essentials

These are the non-negotiable items you need to get rolling.

  • A Bike: Any standard road bike will work perfectly. As long as it’s in good working order, you’re good to go.
  • A Smart Trainer: This is the magic piece of kit. A smart trainer connects to ROUVY and automatically adjusts the resistance to simulate the gradients of the virtual course. Popular choices include the Tacx Neo 2T, which is used by commentators like Colin from Inside Cycling World , and the highly-rated Elite Justo.
  • A ROUVY Account: You’ll need to subscribe to the ROUVY platform to access our races. They offer various plans and a free trial period so you can test it out before committing.

Our “Must-Haves” (for Serious Fun)

To participate fully in our flagship Championship events and ensure fair play, these two items are mandatory.

  • Heart Rate Monitor (HRM): For our Thursday Championship races, a heart rate monitor is MANDATORY. If you race without transmitting heart rate data, you will not be eligible for points in the standings. This is a crucial tool that allows us to ensure a level playing field by verifying that a rider’s effort is legitimate. A reliable HRM can be found for as little as £25 on Amazon and is an excellent training tool in its own right.
  • A Fan (or Multiple): This is arguably the most important piece of equipment for any indoor cyclist. When you ride indoors, there’s no wind to cool you down, which can lead to a power output decline of as much as 10-15%. A powerful fan is essential to combat this and is a piece of recommended equipment for a reason.

The “Level-Up” Gear

Once you’re hooked, these items can significantly enhance your virtual cycling experience.

  • A Big Screen: While you can run ROUVY on a phone or tablet, pro triathlete Fred Funk offers some sound advice: “The bigger the screen, the better the experience!”. Using a large monitor or TV allows you to become fully immersed in ROUVY’s beautiful real-world video routes.
  • A Strava Account: As mentioned, Strava is our social hub. A free account is all you need to connect to ROUVY, upload your rides, and start connecting with other Muckers.

To help you avoid any last-minute panic, here is a simple pre-race checklist. Following this routine will ensure your tech is ready, so you can focus on the ride.

“Am I Fit Enough?” – Yes. Seriously, Yes You Are.

Let’s tackle the biggest question every new rider asks: “Am I fit enough?” We’re here to tell you that the answer is an unequivocal, resounding “Yes.” Our community is intentionally built to accommodate riders of all abilities.

Let us be clear: a typical Muckers race includes “big hitters that are putting out 6 w/kg, and some riders put out 1.5 w/kg and everything else in-between”. This is a massive range of abilities. No matter where you fall on that spectrum, you will find someone to ride with.

This leads to the most important mindset shift for a beginner: you are not racing against the entire field of 100+ riders. You are participating in your own “race within the race.” Your competition is yourself and the small group of riders who are at a similar level. As the ROUVY team advises, “if you regularly join the larger community races like Muckers… you get to know the other racers at your particular level and just beyond. You can try and beat those riders the next time. It’s fun and competitive and you don’t have to be in the top 20 to enjoy it”.

It’s also crucial to understand that we often use ROUVY’s “race” format for technical reasons, not necessarily to signal a eyeballs-out competition. We use the race format because it enables drafting and, just as importantly, ensures that your ride counts towards the official ROUVY challenges—a core activity for our community.

However, just because an event is labeled a “race” doesn’t mean you have to treat it that way. For our non-championship events, you are welcome to “race if you want to race but chill or use as a training ride”. Many of us use the Tuesday and Sunday events to spin our legs, chat on Discord, and simply enjoy the scenery and camaraderie. You have our full permission and encouragement to ride it your way.

The Muckers Weekly Menu: Choosing Your First Ride

Our weekly schedule offers a variety of events, each with its own unique flavor. Choosing the right event for your first time can make all the difference. Here’s a breakdown of our weekly menu to help you decide where to jump in.

  • Tuesday Race Night: This is our classic mid-week hit-out. Described as “perfect for testing your legs,” it’s a fast and furious affair that’s great for a solid workout and friendly competition. It’s an excellent choice for a second or third race once you’ve got your bearings.
  • Thursday Championship: This is “the big one”. The Thursday races are part of our season-long Muckers World Championship, with points awarded based on finishing positions. This is our most competitive event, where rules on heart rate monitors and power limits are strictly enforced.
  • Sunday Social / Hill Climb: This is the ideal starting point for any beginner. Our Sunday events are explicitly designed to be more relaxed and social. Often featuring epic climbs or rolling routes, the focus is less on raw speed and more on endurance, pacing, and community. If you’re looking for a low-pressure environment to meet other Muckers, the Sunday ride is your best bet.

Our global nature is reflected in our time slot system. Recognizing that not everyone can make the main evening event (usually 7:05 PM GMT), we offer alternative start times for the Tuesday and Thursday races, with names like 2LATE4ME (late night), 2EARLY4ME (very early morning), and RISE&RIDE (morning). This ensures that no matter where you are in the world, you can find a race that fits your schedule.

Rookie Racecraft: How to Ride Smarter, Not Just Harder

In virtual racing, power is important, but tactics are the great equalizer. As a beginner, focusing on a few key principles will dramatically improve your experience.

Tactic 1: Drafting is Your Superpower

Drafting is the art of riding in another rider’s slipstream to conserve energy, and it’s fully simulated in ROUVY races. To draft effectively, stay within 1-3 meters of the rider in front; ROUVY provides a helpful on-screen indicator. The energy savings are enormous. In one of our races, a rider stayed with a fast group on a flat section for 55 minutes. By drafting, his average power dropped to just 203 watts, compared to the 280 watts he held for the first five minutes, saving a massive amount of energy for the final climb. Finding a group and working together is the single most effective way to ride faster and longer.

Tactic 2: Know the Course, Know Your Effort

We always post the route details here on the website, including distance and elevation gain. Look at the route profile in the ROUVY app before the race. Is it flat and fast? Is there one big climb at the end? Knowing the terrain allows you to pace yourself effectively.

Tactic 3: The Start is Fast. Don’t Panic.

Virtual race starts are notoriously explosive. When the countdown hits zero, everyone goes full gas. As a beginner, your goal is not to match this initial surge. Ride at a strong but sustainable pace for the first few minutes. The field will inevitably shatter into smaller groups. Let the super-fast riders go, and focus on settling into a rhythm with a group that feels comfortable for you.

Tactic 4: Understand Our Rules of the Game

Our Championship rules aren’t here to be punitive; they exist to protect the integrity of our races and the fun of our community. They are a feature, not a bug, creating a trusted and fair environment for every participant.

The key rules for the Thursday Championship are :

  • Heart Rate Monitor Mandatory: As discussed, this is for effort verification.
  • 5.0w/kg Average Power Limit: Any rider averaging over 5.0 watts per kilogram is disqualified from the results. We know this is often due to a “dodgy trainer rather than cheating,” but we have to draw the line somewhere to ensure fairness.
  • Minimum Weight (Men): To counter weight doping, male riders with a weight set below 60 kg in ROUVY will have their results calculated as if they weigh 60 kg.

These rules should be a source of confidence. They mean you can trust the results and be sure that you are competing on a level playing field.

Kyle Goodram

Kyle is a digital writer for MuckersWorldwide.com I've been out riding all over Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire for the last 12 years. It is mainly to keep fit as I love food and would be 16st if I didn't ride my bike at least 3 times a week. This leads me to Muckers Worldwide, as when the weather is un-rideable (fair weather cyclist) I move indoors to cycle on Rouvy. We have a large group of races that we race throughout winter in the UK. Hope you come and join us on a Tuesday & Thursday title of the races are "Muckers". Thanks, Kyle
