Why cyclists should try Yoga!

Yoga is a practice that has been around for thousands of years and has been gaining popularity in recent times as a form of exercise that can benefit people in a variety of ways. For cyclists, in particular, yoga can be an excellent way to complement their training and improve their performance.

One of the main benefits of yoga for cyclists is improved flexibility. Cycling can lead to tightness in the hips, hamstrings, and lower back, which can lead to discomfort and even injury. Practicing yoga regularly can help to improve flexibility and mobility in these areas, which can lead to a more comfortable ride and less risk of injury.

In addition to flexibility, yoga can also help to improve balance and stability. Cycling requires a great deal of balance, and practicing yoga can help to improve this by challenging the body to maintain certain poses and movements. This can translate to improved bike handling skills and more confidence on the bike.

Another benefit of yoga for cyclists is increased strength. While cycling is a great way to build cardiovascular fitness and endurance, it doesn’t necessarily provide a well-rounded strength workout. Yoga, on the other hand, can help to build strength in the upper body, core, and legs, which can lead to improved performance on the bike.

Perhaps one of the most significant benefits of yoga for cyclists, however, is stress reduction. Cycling can be a high-stress activity, whether it’s due to the physical demands of the sport or the pressures of competition. Practicing yoga can help to reduce stress and promote relaxation, which can have a positive impact on both physical and mental well-being.

So if you’re a cyclist looking to improve your performance, consider adding yoga to your training regimen. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced yogi, there are a variety of poses and routines that can benefit cyclists of all levels. So roll out your mat, take a deep breath, and enjoy the benefits of this ancient practice.

What about being of an age over 50?

Yoga can be particularly beneficial for individuals over the age of 50. As we age, our bodies tend to become less flexible, and we may experience more joint pain and stiffness. Practicing yoga regularly can help to improve flexibility, mobility, and balance, which can help to reduce the risk of falls and injuries.

In addition, yoga can also help to improve posture, which can help to alleviate back and neck pain, as well as improve breathing and circulation. This can be particularly important for individuals who spend a lot of time sitting, as poor posture can exacerbate the effects of a sedentary lifestyle.

Yoga can also be a great way to reduce stress and promote relaxation, which can be particularly important as we age. Many individuals over the age of 50 may be dealing with a variety of stressors, such as retirement, health concerns, and family issues. Practicing yoga can help to reduce stress and promote a sense of calm and well-being.

When starting a yoga practice at any age, it’s important to start slowly and listen to your body. If you have any medical conditions or injuries, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider before starting a yoga practice. Additionally, you may want to seek out a yoga instructor who has experience working with individuals over the age of 50 and who can provide modifications and adjustments as needed.

So in summary, Yoga can benefit cyclists of all ages by improving flexibility, balance, stability, strength, and reducing stress. For older cyclists, practicing yoga can be particularly helpful in maintaining mobility and reducing joint pain and stiffness. Adding yoga to a cycling training regimen can help reduce the risk of injury and improve performance on the bike.

Kyle is a digital writer for MuckersWorldwide.com I've been out riding all over Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire for the last 12 years. It is mainly to keep fit as I love food and would be 16st if I didn't ride my bike at least 3 times a week. This leads me to Muckers Worldwide, as when the weather is un-rideable (fair weather cyclist) I move indoors to cycle on Rouvy. We have a large group of races that we race throughout winter in the UK. Hope you come and join us on a Tuesday & Thursday title of the races are "Muckers". Thanks, Kyle

    Muckers,
I’ve been doing athlete-focused yoga for over 5 years, now. I practice it usually twice a day. Especially after a day like Tuesday Night’s race, 39 miles & 4500ft. It sure made the transition into my 50s better👍 I was lucky and had access to a free streaming service on a different cycling app than Rouvy. If you want to give it a go here is the site I use now https://yoga15.com/
There is a 2-week free trial, which is plenty of time to see a difference🍻
