MUCKERS 2025 “CATEGORY TOP 5” CHAMPIONSHIP!

Screenshot

BIT OF FUN FOR THE TOP 5 IN EACH CATEGORY:

We have taken it upon ourselves to try and work with the category system on NITEOR this year as a way to maybe add some bonus points to next years world championship. So lets use this year to learn its pros and cons and what might crop up along the way. What we do know is we will reset/re apply the categories after the first Thursday race each month, so you know the category you are in for at least 4 races and a full month.

So the top 5 in each category at the end of the month get put into this leaderboard with a simple 5-4-3-2-1 points system. So all the winners in each category get 5 point, then 2nd gets 4 etc etc etc. Bit of fun and an extra little championship to aim for!

LEADERBOARD AFTER JUNES TOP 5 CATEGORY RIDERS ADDED:

Well done to the following 10 riders who all topped there categories in the Muckers June Championships:

BareRemi, Tuden, VeloBuch, Grochang, Yumile, MNHROUVY, Mucker1974, stelviobound and D.J.Dyer!

leaderboard below will now stop at riders on 6 points. Nice place to cut off as you have to had been in the top 5 in your category at least twice to get 6 points as Max in one event is 5 points.

We have category A9 and A7 in joint first, A1 riders in 3rd and 4th and A5 in 5th.

Remember we are trying to set the categories after the first race of the month so you might jump about into maybe a higher or a lower category from month to month as its based on that first race of the month effort. We like this as it’s a true reflection of where you are right now, and not what you put down as your stats when you joined NITEOR. We feel the best way to get this accurate figure is with a hill climb as the first event. This is also why you might see your category is different in all the various championships across NITEOR as its all down to that event organizer on when they decide to learn or re learn the categories.

Anyway, this is just a way for all of you in a Muckers Championship Race to actually race for something as all 10 categories are there with some being more full than others!

Neil Rushby

co-founder of muckersworldwide.com and race organizer! Been into cycling since a kid and spent most of the time on BMX and mountain bikes. Took me longer than most to get the road cycling bug but I was bitten around 5 years ago when I finally got a fully fledged road bike that fitted and I let the flat handled road bike go...

  1. Matthias Heil says:

As a current (confused) beneficiary of this scheme may I questions its logic because I honestly can’t see it: Surely there’s some correlation between W/kg (which seems to be the basis for the grouping) and where people end up in the overall leaderboard.

I currently happen to be “top” of the group of riders between 3.2 – 3.4 W/kg. Yay! Yay? Here’s what I don’t get: the limits are obviously completely random and if you’d chosen them to be 3.3 -3.5 W/kg, say, I’d probably end up more or less in the middle of that group; 3.4-3.6 W/kg would probably put me bottom, etc. all without actually changing my (or anybody else’s) effort. I realise that grouping people by their W/kg is not exactly the same as grouping them in terms of percentage of the finish time (e.g. “finished with 105 to 110% of the winner’s time”, etc — “winning” in such a group would be truly meaningless) because W/kg don’t translate directly into times, but it’s pretty damn close, isn’t it? The only possible interpretation I can see is that wheelsuckers win (and I’m therefore mortified to be doing so well!) since they’d end up with better times at lower W/kg.

Anyway, I’m probably taking this waaaay too seriously, but was just wondering if anybody’s thought this through and is willing to educate me. Could, of course, also be that it’s just a bit of fun (as suggested by the title!), in which case that’s fine too 🙂

    Thanks!

    • Neil Rushby says:

Yep, Definitely waaaay to seriously. 😂😁, but thank you for the comment and i will try to tackle some of your points. 🤞🤞🤞

We are going to reset the categories after the first race of the month. So even if you are wheel sucking on that race, your w/kg will be lower than those around you so you would end up in a lower category and against those others at that power in that category grouping just for that month. Its about grouping you as close together as possible with rivals, who are all being assessed at the same time as you are. Just so you can have a bit of fun against those guys for that month. This is why we used a hill climb as the first race in Feb to see if that was the best way to do the category assessment, or will Marches more downhilly profile be the way. Like we said in other blogs, we are learning this year.

The groupings have to start and end somewhere. 3.2-3.4 0r 3.3-3.5 doesn’t really matter. its a group system that’s been worked out by NITEOR and is a standard they will use for all events. even if we’d have gone for 2 categories: those over 3, and those under 3, those 3.1 riders would be asking why are we not doing 3.2 and above lol

And this is about racing! Sucking wheels is part of that. If we don’t like what drafting is doing, we go and do non-drafting races instead. There’s more than enough “lets find the fastest, strongest riders on ROUVY” events on NITEOR and ROUVY itself that we just want to try something different and celebrate everyone’s battles throughout the finishing order. I think to use the word “Mortified” to have got more points in the championship than those of similar power to yourself is a bit of a sad way to look at it. You raced better than them. Or they maybe had a poor race once and hit the wall and beat you on the other 3 races, but your points just added up better than there’s? Maybe your starts are just far superior so you naturally end up in the faster trains straight away? there’s so many permutations about how you win the category that to say wheel sucking is the “only possible interpretation” you can see is very narrow minded mucker duck! Especially after just 1 Month

So this little “fun” leaderboard for the year, is just to reward those riders who have tried enough to get top 5 in there category over the 4 races in the month. Nothing else

Also where else can you find you, nelson, D.J.Dyer, karel, cdtchris etc etc on the same points??

That’s our views anyway. But if you don’t agree, just remember we only thought we’d run this for fun and as a way to include everyone in a nice and easy leaderboard for the year and to celebrate those that got top 5 in there categories that month.

      • Matthias Heil says:

All fine and no objections to fun (he said, having just picked himself off the floor after this week’s generous helping of the same — what a race! 🥵🥵🥵).

      • Chris says:

I appreciate the explanation Neil. I’m am with Matthias not understanding how I end up with any points, especially since I am low on the power grid. My strategy is to keep trying my hardest, so I am surprised that I have any points at all. In addition to seeing I have points, I was mentioned in Neil’s reply!

        • Neil Rushby says:

hey Chris, i explain it right at the top of this blog so I’ll just refer you to that if that’s ok. keep trying your hardest mate, and if this can help motivate you, then even better. This has got nothing to do with where you are on the final leaderboard (power grid) its about where you are in your smaller category battle. effort is effort in our book.

    • Andy_UP says:

I totally agree with you Matthias. Although the rules are transparant, I just see it as a way for Neil to end up in top 3 of something :p I don’t bother much, if it inspires people to work out or have more fun during the race, I’m all for it. And Neil will keep on tampering and who know’s he might find something actually usefull some day lol 😉

      • Neil Rushby says:

hey Andy, nothing like totally agreeing with someone 6 months later is there lol. Only joking mucker, but i have already said this hasn’t worked in previous posts and blogs, but a promise is a promise so I’ll keep it going to the end of the year. The leaderboard actually shows the Muckers who have been in the top 5 in there category every month. So the more you are in it, and the higher you are, the better you score. It’s definitely been a bit hard for people to see it as that so it’s gone next year.

  2. Duckman says:

Fun, congrats to everyone that made the list. I of course think that doing this by age category is more meaningful in the big picture (as I’m an old guy). Hopefully at the end of the year some age podiums could be handed out.

  3. Manuel Lamber SHARK says:

Perhaps can be a problem for cat, if one hard rider in the first race of the month ride under his normally level, for all mount stay in the top of this category.
In march I found some riders that usually should be of sure in other cat.
Therefore we’ll see what’s happened for the next 👍

  4. BigJonRides R says:

Wow currently top courtesy of B starting username but will take it especially after a bad virus on the first race and still below par on the 2nd. Still, had a great podium battle which was only decided by a few places on last race to get maximum. Thanks for the all the extra admin for these races as does keep it interesting for us down the leaderboard and gives extra motivation to try and catch your podium rivals. Probably will be away for the last race this month so short lived glory days 🤣

  5. Niels Brynnum says:

Honoured to share the podium with the legend Mr. Muckers 💪🏻💪🏻 🚴💨💨

  6. Neil Rushby says:

this is the only championship where i am battling D.J.Dyer and BareRemi! love it!

    • Desjdyer says:

Great fun thanks for the invite.

      • Neil Rushby says:

i just need you to either improve up a category so its harder for you to get gold every month (i suppose you’d say the same for me 😂) or we get more competition in the A9 category!! Bur well done for constantly being the best of those around you!

  7. Paul Curtis says:

If we are trying to group in power capability, is there any posibility in having the fun HIT extra races all with standard rouvy bikes and wheels? Just for fun to see true power vs speed.

    • Neil Rushby says:

Hi Paul, thanks for the comment. we’ve wrote in the past how trying to have everyone on the same bikes and wheels would be a great idea, but its just impossible to police. The results afterwards don’t show you what bike and wheels were used. We have asked for this (and other stuff like drafting factor)to be more accessible when we’ve had a few interviews with ROUVY but it’s not been actioned and we’ve no idea if it ever will be. But if it was an option when setting up the race, we’d look at it, especially for the 1 night of HIIT events as that would be perfect for that!

So we get where you’re coming from, but the categories aren’t too far off as it is as most people are on decent wheel and frame combos now anyway. If it becomes easy to initiate and police, we are up for anything, just not up for wasting loads of time to get results in a certain order (that will then just get shade thrown on it because someone is accused of being on an e bike or a dodgy trainer etc etc etc etc)

First and foremost, I enjoy everything about mucker racing, really love our Tuesday and Thursday Races, having stated that I do have a question for the group. I am wondering if the W/kg for bigger riders might not be lower than a smaller rider even when the time is the same? Does this always indicate how much a rider is drafting? I routinely have the lowest W/kg in the group on flat or hilly courses. I don’t think it falls to drafting (wheel sucking). If I am in a group in which I can’t contribute, I eventually get spit out the back. Typically, I contribute, but I still have the lowest W/kg among those around me in the standings. Is W/kg the only metric that matters?

Hi Chuck. Thanks for the comment. So many factors and ways i want try and answer your questions but don’t want to go on and on like i normally do. lol. No w/kg isn’t the only metric that matters but its the easiest one to use to try and bunch riders together to try and create categories that have similar strength riders in it. Your average w/kg can be influenced by how you ride. I am exactly the same that my average w/kg over a ride is a lot lower than those around me. But i will rest and roll when i can in a race. some others really don’t like to do that and just keep on it all the time. So all those times i roll and create 0 watts, really brings my average right down, especially compared to those around me who might just keep the legs going and produce an easy 1.5 w/kg. This has a massive effect on average w/kg. Some of these other riders might be really focused on there w/kg figure so even when they can rest, the just stay on the power, all the time. also there trainers might show them pulling watts even when they are coasting or just keeping with the group. Like i said, lots of factors.

We try not to get too caught up in it as its kinda a pointless rabbit hole to go down. I just see that if I’m in a pack of riders that have all averaged more w/kg than me, then i raced better and more efficiently. Its about where you finish on a championship race night as its all about the points, not about how long you pulled for.

I to usually put out less wpg than those around me on the leader board and I think it is because I ride with a high cadence.
